Welcome To The First Awards CeremonyTorfaen Training’s award ceremony took place at the LIFE Station Trevethin, Pontypool on Thursday 25th May and attracted over 50 guests, including those learners who had been shortlisted. The Awards rewarded Individual Learners, Employers and Practitioners who have excelled throughout their learning programmes.

There was a large number of nominations at a high standard for each category, which made it a difficult process for the judges when deciding the winners.

Stuart Tandy, Torfaen Training Manager, said: “We are so pleased to be hosting the very first awards of this kind within our organisation. Not only does it showcase the achievements of those

who have exceeded expectations but it also shows the commitment of Torfaen Training towards improving skills for people, employers and the Welsh economy”.

The Traineeship of the Year winner, Jonathan Marquis based in the catering facility (Bron Appetit) at Bron Afon Community Housing, Cwmbran, was recognised for his commitment to learning and the ability to develop and impress his supervisors in only 6 months. Jonathan will soon

progress to Level 1 of the Traineeship programme. Whilst Kelly Nancarrow, Practitioner of the Year winner, was highly praised for her dedication as a Training Officer and Assessor.

With such a large volume of nominations the judges had a very difficult time deciding the winners.

However, many of the candidates who reached the final stages but didn’t quite get to the winning spot could probably become nominees again, as they progress through their learning journeys.

The judges would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Training Officers and Practitioners who submitted nominations for these

awards, but above all congratulate the winners and wish them every success for the future.

The LIFE Station was the ideal venue for the first ever Torfaen Training Awards ceremony - not too big and not too small.

Based within a short commute of Pontypool town centre, all the guests and nominees had no problems finding the building. All were very impressed by its modern design and amongst its many talked about attributes throughout the after presentation buffet were the specialist training

facilities such as the IT suites, training kitchens, crèche and fully equipped café.

With over 50 guests in attendance there was ample room in the main conference room and plenty of car park spaces for such a large contingent of people. Overall the event ran like clockwork and everyone looked forward to seeing the winner’s video clips on the large display screens.

CandidateVideo’sEach of the winners had a short video produced which presents the candidate at work. They are also shown speaking into the camera about their learner journey and how they have improved.

On some of these ‘mini-movies’ their Managers or Supervisors also comment on how each individual has progressed in their organisations.

The video clips will shortly be available to view on our Twitter (@TorfaenTraining) and Facebook (torfaentraining1) social media sites.

There was a good turnout for the Torfaen Training Career Events Day on the 28th June which was

even better than expected, despite the heavy rain.Learning Support Officer, Donna Britton, had met her starter targets by 11am and doubled them by the time it had all finished, she said:

“I was so pleased to see lots of people arriving shortly after the doors opened. To keep

costs down we used social media to promote the event, which worked. It was so successful that we will have a follow up session towards the end of August.”

With so many keen young people eager to start their learning journey, the next twelve months are going to very busy at Torfaen Training.

The Be Nice Bus arrives at the event to educate young people about Cyberbullying.
