President's Message

Hi PSCC Members,

We had a wonderful Year End Banquet in June, and I was pleased to award Gena Reebs with the Lucille Ains-worth Service Award and announce the creation of a new Award, The George Ferrara Mentor Award, whichwas given to Bill Royce for his encouraging mentorship of individuals and education in the club.

I am very pleased to announce the election of a new Vice President, Margie Robison! We promised her a FieldTrip Committee to help organize and lead field trips, and she graciously volunteered for the position. The FieldTrip Committee met briefly after the meeting, and since it consists of six people, we each took 2 field trips andthe year is covered.

We had a field trip to Richmond Beach Saltwater Park at low tide in June. The next trip will be on July 12, tothe zoo. See page 6 of this newsletter for details.

Many kudos and thanks to Dave Patzwald, for researching our new projector. The new projector allows forlarger images in high definition, so please see our website for information on changes for digital submissions.A scanner has been donated to the club, which we will auction off at $5 per ticket. Drawings will be done inAugust at the Ice Cream Social on Digital Night, August 14. Remember to bring your favorite topping, we willbring the ice cream.

I hope you all enjoy this Summer,

Useful Web LinksTraveling and PhotographySummer is travel time for many of us. Traveling as a photographer has its own unique challenges. I found thisarticle helpful in my organization: https://digital-photography-school.com/7-reasons-stay-organized-travelingOn the same subject, staying safe is very important. Good tips can be found athttps://photographylife.com/keeping-camera-gear-safe-when-traveling

PrintingMost of us like big prints, but our printers aren’t always up the task. We can send out our work to labs or wecan try other tricks. I found this article very provocative. Even those of us with large format printers could usethis to make a wall sized work of art.http://blog.redrivercatalog.com/2017/06/make-big-images-with-small-desktop-printers.html

The PalouseOne of the great things about living here is that one of the most popular photography locations in the countryis only a five hour drive away. One of the many pros who leads (very expensive) tours to the region is KevinRaber from Luminous Landscape. He has an interesting write-up on the experience of how things havechanged over the last ten years and, especially tantalizing, has published his GPS tracklogs of where he goes:https://luminous-landscape.com/palouse-luminous-landscapes-palouse-workshops/I saw a number of places I haven’t previously checked out, but will be certain to the next time we make ourway over there.

“Photographers tend not to photograph whatthey can’t see, which is the very reason oneshould try to attempt it. Otherwise we’re goingto go on forever just photographing more facesand more rooms and more places. Photographyhas to transcend description. It has to go beyonddescription to bring insight into the subject, orreveal the subject, not as it looks, but how doesit feel?”

– Duane Michals

“Photography, even thoughsome people refer to it as amechanical process, forcesyou to reach out to the worldin front of you.”

OLD BUSINESS: There was much concern about the low attendance on print night, and when we offered education to beincluded on print night, there was a good turn out.Henry Heerschap sent out a poll to all members asking why attendance on print night was so low and he received 10 re-sponses. The conclusion is that we need to find other solutions.

They will then be returned and a slideshow will be made of the altered images. There is an ice cream social on August 14, 2017, digital night and there will be a MeetUp posted. There was a discussion of the website and how we could improve it. It was suggested that perhaps we could have peo-ple join the club on line. Henry Heerschap will look into it.There is concern about the poor attendance at the Christmas banquet and the year-end banquet. It was suggested thatagain Meet-Up might pull in more attendees.Monday, July 31, 2017, is an education night. Margery Robison will find someone to head it, and the information will beemailed to all.The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 pm.Respectfully submitted, Mary Tevis, Secretary
