We have just finished celebrating July Fourth with parents, children and grandchildren plus an aunt. I hope you all had a pleasant and safe holiday. We have some new gravel in the parking and a huge thank you to all that planned and helped with this endeavor. On such a hot day, I hope that you took advantage of the free beer at work parties! The “Longest Day” cruise to the Gilbert River was a big success, and I will let Fleet Captain Gib tell you more about that. Several people are in- terested or in the process of becom- ing members. Come to a meeting to meet them as they fulfill their new member requirements. As al- ways, Teri and I hope to see you at the club or on the channel. Commodore Mike Hello all, This has been an amazing summer so far, I have not seen this kind of weather for close to 30 years. I used to gauge it by my daughter’s birth- day which is the May 18 th ; yes the mountain blew during her first par- ty. Every year I could count on the weather to be wonderful, so she had outdoor sleep overs until she was teenager and the weather started to change. It was rainy or otherwise not predicable. Party’s moved in- doors. Here it is possible we have come full circle. Our granddaughter Emerson the Princess of Neptune has a birthday on May 16 th maybe she will be able to count on sleep overs for a few years. Everything has its cycles and I see in our club the signs of a change. The feeling of comradery, the de- sire to makes improvements to our club so that we all have a good time, like the ski chair out front that says summer fun, our bathroom with the clever toilet paper holder, our varnished picnic table and bench and on and on. Thank you to all of you that continue to think of all of us. As the commodore says, “Every time we are at the club we should leave it a little better than we found it”. (He borrowed that saying from Gib”) I hope you had a great 4 th , enjoy the rest of July. See you at the club or on a dock. First Lady, Teri Have you noticed the latest piece of art in the form of an Adiron- dack chair on the head dock ? Jim Donaldson donated all of his old water skis for the project and Dave Karpeles used his talent and skills to create “ The Chair “.

I wanted to thank you for lettingmy represent MCYC as yourDaughter of Neptune this year. Ithas been a fun and rewarding ex-perience so far.I have attended a ladies dinner atRose City Yacht Club which had a“Mad Hatters Tea Party Theme.”There were all kinds of crazy hatsand raffle drawings. The daugh-ters contributed a “move night”basket filled with goodies. Thefood was good and we got to drawtickets and deliver prizes.Opening Day ceremonies wereheld at Portland Yacht Club onMay 2. Unfortunately I wasn’table to stay for judging the paradebecause I was asked to my HighSchool Prom (which truly was somuch fun). I was able to attendthe breakfast and participate in theflag raising ceremony for OpeningDay. Father Neptune was thereand it was a beautiful morning. Ieven ran into one of the River Pa-trol Captains who is from my littlehome town of Brush Prairie. This past weekend was very busydecorating our float Friday for theStarlight Parade. We worked forabout 3 hours Friday night at Larryand Vicky Justice’s home. Westrung lots of lights and blew upover 180 balloons so decorate ourparty barge. The Justice’s fed usPizza and salad.Saturday we spent the entire dayform 2 pm until past 10 pm put-ting finishing touches on our floatand then riding in the parade to

promote Life Jacket Safety. It wasa very fun experience and a rowdyparade. Father Neptune was withus on your highly glowing partybarge. We even had lit mermaidtails and lights in our tiaras!I got to take a couple days off fromschool to take a limo to Astoriawith our chaperones and 3 otherdaughters. We stayed overnight, got up at 4 am and boarded a CoastGuard ship to ride into Rose Festi-val in Portland. There were somepretty handsome sailors that gaveus a tour! Thanks again for letting me be yourdaughter!

Why are many coin banks shapedlike pigs ?

Long ago, dishes and cookwarein Europe were of a dense orangeclay called “pygg”. When peoplesaved coins in jars made of thisclay, the jars became known as‘pygg banks’. When an Englishpotter misunderstood the word,he he made a bank that resembleda pig and it caught on.

Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars havenotches, while pennies and nick-els do not ?

The US Mint began puttingnotches on the edge of coins con-taining gold and silver to discour-age holders from shaving offsmall quantities of the preciousmetals. Dimes, quarters and halfdollars are notched because theyused to contain silver. Penniesand nickels aren’t notched be-cause the metals they contain arenot valuable enough to shave.

Why do men’s clothes have but-tons on the right side while wom-en’s clothes have buttons on theleft ?

When buttons were invented, they were very expensive andworn primarily by the rich. Be-cause wealthy women weredressed by maids, dressmakersput the buttons on the maid’sright ! Since most people areright handed, it is easier to pushbuttons on the right through holeson the left and that’s where wom-en’s buttons have remained since.
