As warm and sticky as it may sometimes be around here at this time of the year, I real- ly don’t mind, because it always gives me a little bit of a thrill to know that, in Phoenix, it’s about 15-20 degrees hotter. I guess that makes me a terrible person, but so be it. After almost 30 years in the “Valley of the Sun” I think I’m entitled to a wee bit of weath- er-based, summertime schadenfreude. While we have no featured artist at the Astro St. Studio this month, we do have some very good looking art on the walls, and next door at “Yesterday’s Books, Art and Such”, throughout the month of Ju- ly, there will be a Retrospective Show and Sale of the oil paintings of Bill Willis. Bill was a long time member of the HAA and also served the Association for a number of years as our Art in the Park Chairman. With his wife, Cathy, he came to Sierra Vista after having had a long and varied career, both in the Army and in the Arts. He was named Sierra Vista’s Visual Artist of the Year for 2012 at the Annual Mayor’s Arts and Humanities Awards. When he passed away in November, 2013, just about six weeks after wrapping up his last Art in the Park, he left behind a number of fine oil paintings, many of which were inspired by the Mexican land- scapes that he came to know and love during the many seasons he and Cathy spent south of the border. Cathy has offered to donate a hefty portion of the income from the sales of his work to the HAA, so this is your chance to buy some art and help out the HAA at the same time. There will be a reception there on Saturday, July 11, from 2-5pm. Also on display there, throughout the month, will be paintings and scratch- board art by Trilby Arnold, watercolors by Elizabeth Line, and oils by Sue Thatcher. The Bookstore hours are: Wednesday-Sunday, 12-5. The bookstore/gallery is located in the house adjoining the HAA Studio & Gallery at 3818 Astro St. in Hereford. As for the new building, we are still plowing through the planning stages. While a lot has been done to lay the groundwork, there’s nothing yet to look at. In some ways, it feels a little like we’re circling around in the calm waters, just above Niagara Falls. connued on page 3 President’s Message Three Amigos by Bill Willis

Happy July everyone,

I hope you all are enjoying our early monsoon weather, and also, I hope it keeps going like this all summer long. As warm and sticky as it may sometimes be around here at this time of the year, I real-ly don’t mind, because it always gives me a little bit of a thrill to know that, in Phoenix, it’s about 15-20 degrees hotter. I guess that makes me a terrible person, but so be it. After almost 30 years in the “Valley of the Sun” I think I’m entitled to a wee bit of weath-er-based, summertime schadenfreude.

While we have no featured artist at the Astro St. Studio this month,

we do have some very good looking art on the walls, and next door

at “Yesterday’s Books, Art and Such”, throughout the month of Ju-

ly, there will be a Retrospective Show and Sale of the oil paintings

of Bill Willis. Bill was a long time member of the HAA and also

served the Association for a number of years as our Art in the Park

Chairman. With his wife, Cathy, he came to Sierra Vista after having

had a long and varied career, both in the Army and in the Arts. He

was named Sierra Vista’s Visual Artist of the Year for 2012 at the Annual Mayor’s Arts and Humanities

Awards. When he passed away in November, 2013, just about six weeks after wrapping up his last Art in

the Park, he left behind a number of fine oil paintings, many of which were inspired by the Mexican land-

scapes that he came to know and love during the many seasons he and Cathy spent south of the border.

Cathy has offered to donate a hefty portion of the income from the sales of his work to the HAA, so this is

your chance to buy some art and help out the HAA at the same time. There will be a reception there on

Saturday, July 11, from 2-5pm. Also on display there, throughout the month, will be paintings and scratch-

board art by Trilby Arnold, watercolors by Elizabeth Line, and oils by Sue Thatcher. The Bookstore hours

are: Wednesday-Sunday, 12-5. The bookstore/gallery is located in the house adjoining the HAA Studio &

Gallery at 3818 Astro St. in Hereford.

As for the new building, we are still plowing through the planning stages. While a lot has been done to lay

the groundwork, there’s nothing yet to look at. In some ways, it feels a little like we’re circling around in

the calm waters, just above Niagara Falls. continued on page 3

Not much to do right now but paddle, but we think it could get really exciting, really fast. We have talked to contrac-tors for the roofing and the air condi-

tioning, and are still talking to contractors about the interior work. We have had an on-site consultation with a man from the City to find out what we will need to do to get the building permit and ultimately, the certificate of occupan-cy and the business license from the city. All of that has lead to another con-sultation with a draftsman who will be working with an architect to come up with a plan that we hope will meet all of the city requirements while staying within, or at least within screaming distance of our budget. It turns out that the requirements for an organization such as ours are actually more stringent than for a regular retail business. For instance, because of the probability that we will be holding meetings, classes and receptions, part of the building will most likely have to be classified as “assembly” space, and there is a different occupancy rating for that category of usage than might apply in the rest of the building. That may mean we may need more bathroom space, and possibly a more heavy duty AC unit in that area. But as yet, we don’t know anything for sure. We will need to firm up our plans in order to firm up the numbers. At the same time, we’ll need to firm up the numbers in order to firm up the plans. A little bit of a Catch-22. It is very important though, that the building permit that we do apply for covers all the right things but doesn’t overreach, because we will not get a certificate of occupancy (i.e., we can’t move in) until all the work is done, as per the permit. There are the three considerations: (1) what we’d like, (2) what we can afford, and (3) what the city will require us to do. As much as we’d love to be able to do everything all at once and be done with it, we may have to do some prioritizing. But the good news is that all of these things will serve to increase the value of the property, and once they have been done, our costs for maintaining it will be very small. Plus, with our 501C-3 status as a non-profit arts organization, we will be exempt from the county property taxes. (That also means, that if you would like to make a contribution to our building fund, you will be allowed to claim it as a tax deduction. Some-thing to think about.)

In the meantime, we’ll all just have to hurry up and wait. Cool our heels, inas-much as that’s possible this time of year.

Don’t forget the Annual HAA picnic, to be held at the Les and Mary Stafford’s house on July 18. More details and the directions to their house are to be found on page 4 of the ArtyFacts.

Hope to see you there,

ART SHOW AT YESTERDAY'S BOOKSTORE by Angel Rutherford

Trilby Arnold is the featured Artist for the month of June. She paints mostly in oil, pastel and scratch art engraving. Her paintings show the beauty of the Southwest and our local scenery with a special love for the San Pedro River. Trilby shows an amazing skill in her scratch-art. This is a show worth seeing.

Also on display is the art of the late Bill Willis, he painted mostly in oil and his images show his love for the Southwest and Mexico.

There is also artwork on display from watercolorist Elizabeth Line, Sue Thatcher, and Harlan White. The show continues through July.

Yesterday's Bookstore is

located in Hereford,

3816 Astro Street, south of Hwy 92

next to the HAA

Studio, and is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5pm.

Art in the Park News

Call to Artists Art in the Park Insert Contest- $75 Prize

It's time again for our annual contest to come up with a design for the cover of this year's Art in the Park SV Herald insert. This design will be used not only for the insert that appears in the paper on the weekend before the event, but it's also the one that will go on all of our posters and other Art in the Park advertising for 2015. We will be looking for something bright, bold, and beautiful that evokes the spirit of Art in the Park, and is adaptable to different formats, as the insert version will be square and the posters will be ver-tical. There will be lettering that says: The Huachuca Art Association presents the 44th Annual Art in the Park at Veterans' Memorial Park, Sierra Vista, AZ, October 3rd & 4th, 2015, plus there will be some other copy with details, like a listing of the different categories of merchandise for sale. While you might want to give some thought as to where the lettering might go, and maybe pencil it in on an overlay, do not waste a lot of time on that, as the art department at the Herald always redoes it anyway. What we are looking for is the design concept, something that shows the public what Art in the Park is all about, and lets people know that this is a special event not to be missed.

The deadline for entries is August 15. You can either email a photo of your submission to me at: [email protected], or mail it to: Huachuca Art Association, P.O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ 85636. If it is a digital drawing, it needs to be done at a large enough size and high enough resolution to be printed at an 11 x 17 size. If it is done in traditional media, it will have to be made available to be photographed or scanned. You can call me at: 803-7157 if you have any questions, or if you'd like to arrange to drop your entry off at the Astro St. Studio.

Keep Oct 3rd and 4th on your calendar for our 44th Art in the Park. We have a number of exciting new vendors who will be joining our

favorite returning ones this year. If you are a member and are willing to help out, either on the days of the event or with some of

the set up, take down, or the pre-event planning, please contact Liz at: [email protected], or Lois at: [email protected]
