Fireworks, Exploding Targets Ban in EffectPORTLAND, Ore. – Effective May
15, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has prohibited the use of fire-works and exploding targets on all BLM-managed public lands through-out Oregon and Washington.
The ban is in effect through Oct. 15. In both states, the BLM manages more than 16 million acres of public land.
Historically, May is not consid-ered at high risk for large wildfires. But this year’s low snowpack over much of Oregon and lower elevations in eastern Washington may boost the potential for possible wildfires dur-ing dry, windy conditions.
Recent longer fire seasons have created substantial changes in fire behavior. Fires are burning hotter and longer, fueling fire suppression costs.
Those who ignite fireworks or exploding targets on BLM-managed lands can be fined up to $1,000, receive a prison term of up to one year or both. In addition, individu-als responsible for starting wildland fires on federal lands can be billed for the cost of fire suppression.
The BLM cooperates with the Pacific Northwest Wildfire Coordi-nating Group to fight wildland fires in the Pacific Northwest.
The Geographic Area Coordina-tion Center offers updates on the fire potential regionally and nationally and the NW Coordination Center has updates in the Pacific Northwest.
Directions: From Hwy 20, take Hwy 229 to Siletz and turn right (east) on Logsden Rd. The hatchery is 5 miles past the Logsden

Aquarium Launches Close Encounter Campaign and Summer SweepstakesNEWPORT, Ore. – The Oregon
Coast Aquarium kicked off its new campaign, Closer Than You Think, in June to capture the attention of Oregon residents and visitors with surreal scenes of marine life in domestic settings.
The idea of exploring marine envi-ronments from dry land was unat-tainable just a few decades ago. Closer Thank You Think shows how closely visitors can connect with the marine animals that live in the little-explored, watery dimension of our planet. The tagline also gives a nod to the geo-graphic proximity of the nationally acclaimed aquarium to Oregonians.
Artwork covering billboards, post-ers, print and digital ads across Ore-gon will feature extraordinary scenes created by Portland-based photogra-pher Holly Andres in partnership with advertising agency MANIFESTO.
A highlight of the campaign, the Summer Sweepstakes, will award one person each week a behind-the-scenes adventure at the aquarium.
Each winner, and their three guests, will enjoy overnight accom-modations at the Newport La Quinta Inn & Suites, admission to the aquar-ium, a behind-the-scenes tour and their choice of a Sea Lion Kiss or Octopus Encounter.
To enter the sweepstakes, see the campaign and learn how you can connect with the aquarium’s ani-mals, visit GetCloserThanYouThink.com. Participants must be age 18 or older to enter and children must be 8 years or older to participate in encounter programs.
The aquarium also will bring give-aways and goodies to the Portland area during 20 different Radio Disney events this summer. For a complete list of events, visit aquarium.org.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is open every day this summer from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
