Several weeks went by and the volunteer heard that a young boy in the neighborhood was feeding an abandoned cat in a vacant home. HOPE Safehouse came to the rescue and the cat was safely removed from the house and named Mykee. The skinny cat was relatively healthy but had developed crystals in his urine and needed a special diet. Mykee was vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped and went to live in one of HOPE Safehouse’s loving foster homes. After several months on a prescription diet, tests showed the crystals had diminished. However, it’s likely Mykee will always have serious food issues. A normally mild mannered cat, he becomes frantic at feeding time, leaping around and crying loudly until he is fed. He constantly explores the kitchen counters looking for any crumb to eat and devours whatever he can find. While Mykee was regaining his strength in his foster home, he met Nugget, a two year old who had come up from a shelter in Georgia. Nugget too had experienced some tough times and was in pretty bad shape. Sparse and wiry hair covered his stocky bowlegged body. His nose was crusty and sore, his ears so dirty they looked like they were packed with mud. Poor Nugget also suffered from severe diarrhea. Yet, even with all of his issues, Nugget was a cheerful, friendly boy. He would push his head into willing hands, as if to say “please, rub my ears!” Nugget was neutered, dewormed, vaccinated and micro-chipped, HOPE’s standard care for a new arrival. But his diarrhea was not improving, so the vet did more extensive testing. Nugget was diagnosed with Giardia, Clostridium, Coronavirus and Toxoplasmosis, quite a mouthful. However, after weeks of strong antibiotics and a healthy diet in his foster home, he made a full recovery. Throughout his sickness and during his recovery, Nugget was always a happy cat, eager to play and be petted. His once coarse, thin coat was now soft and furry. And that’s when the “Buff Boys” journey together began in earnest. They got their nickname since they enjoyed grooming each other. They were adopted together and spent the recent holidays with their new adoptive family. We’re told they wrestle and take turns chasing each other around their new house. They both enjoy feather toys and anything that spins, squeaks or flies. They watch the birds out the window and when it’s time for a nap, they can be found cuddled together. Our “Buff Boys” – just another happy ending for the volunteers at HOPE.

Ways to Help H.O.P.E. …

www.hopesafehouse.org Page 2

It’s easy to help HOPE by doing what you do every -day - search and shop the Internet.

Go to www.goodsearch.com and enter HOPE Safe-house as your designated charity. Every time you search the Internet through the GoodSearch web-site, HOPE will receive a penny. GoodSearch is powered by Yahoo so you will get the same great results on all your searches.

You can also help HOPE receive money by shop-ping online. Go to www.goodsearch.com and locate the store you would like to shop and if you have HOPE as your charity we will receive a percentage of your sales. Don’t forget to check the coupons of your favorite stores that are listed on GoodSearch. HOPE can receive money from airline ticket purchases to pharmacy purchases to clothes purchases to pet supply purchases. Hun-dreds of stores you shop on the web everyday are on GoodSearch.

It really is easy to donate to HOPE just by shop-ping and searching the Internet. If you are con-cerned you might forget to go to the GoodSearch website, they have a toolbar you can download so every search will be counted.

Hi,Last spring our lab, Annie, was barkingto tell a bear cub to get away from ourpatio door. It had its paws on the out-side handle. It wouldn’t leave until Abi,our rescue calico flew through the air, snarling at the bear and did a body-slamagainst the door by the bear’s face. Inever saw a bear run away so fast. Abiis our designated bear chaser, whileAnnie is our bear-alert system manger.

Thank you for all the love, compassionand beauty you all bring into the world!

Dear HOPE,Murphy (Sherri) that we adopted in 2005is doing great and is a wonderful addi-tion to our family. Over the past 9 yearswe have also adopted a male Pomeranianpuppy named Max. We also had twochildren, Madalyn and Maralyn.Murphy is so good with the girls andeven sleeps in Madalyn’s bed at night.Murphy loves to run around our fencedbackyard playing fetch and chasing thegirls. Maybe it’s more ‘herding’ the girls– she’s definitely a border collie! Sheloves running with Matt and playing inthe dog park. We are very blessed tohave such a great dog.

Matt & Meghan Giese

In December I rescued a six month oldCalico from living outside. She hasbecome the love of my life. She neverwould have made it through the winter.

I truly support HOPE Safehouse, youare truly a gift to homeless animals.Thank God for people like you.

Hi Lynn,I read about what happened with the dog(Peach) you rescued. I am so happy tosee she was adopted by a loving family.

I have a yellow lab Ellie that we rescuedwhen the owner couldn’t afford the hipdysplasia surgery she needed. Ellie isthe love of our lives.

I would like to send a very special thankyou to HOPE for rescuing me andanother thank you to the family that fos-tered me and helped with my pups.

Sincerely,Abbe

Dear Lynn,

I cannot begin to tell you the joy Abbehas brought to my life. She has takenover my heart & my home.

She has adjusted quickly and positively. The classes at Katie’s CanineKlubhouse were much more thanexpected. Katie’s knowledge, patienceand compassion made the whole experi-ence a pleasure. My hat goes off toKatie & I will highly recommend her.

When I think of the hopeless conditionsAbbe came from, the miles traveled andobstacles overcome, it is nothing shortof a miracle. Thank you so much forbeing the driving force and to all thepeople involved that brought Abbe tome!

Sincerely,Honor Steinmetz

Hello,

I wanted to let you know that we lostour sweet boy last month after his bravefight with liver cancer. We adoptedOwen back in 2004 from the group of70 that came from down south. He wasour first dog and quite the handful forfirst time owners. We received an emailfrom a friend saying HOPE needed fos-ters for the large number of pups theyjust rescued. When we arrived at NorthShore to pick up our foster puppy, theman handed us Owen and said “goodluck with this one”...in a funny way ofcourse. His name at the time was Elfand he had a brother Eggroll and sisterFern. We brought him home and fell inlove with him immediately and wantedto keep him. He was so young, theyguessed 5 weeks, such a smart and live-ly pup! He kept us on our toes for sure

(Continued from page 4)but he also taught us how much joy adog can bring to our lives. He was soengaged in life. He loved every thing hecame in contact with from babies to kit-tens. When we found out Owen hadliver cancer in the spring of 2012, wewere beyond devastated. We had hopethat they would be able to remove thetumor surgically but that was not possi-ble. Wanting to save him we looked foralternate therapy for him—which arevery few. We came across a clinicalstudy being conducted in New YorkCity. We decided to do this and traveledwith Owen 3 times to NYC for treat-ment. This treatment help extendOwen’s life another 20 months, forwhich we are so grateful. He was notphased by anything the whole time andlived happy until the day before his pass-ing. He lived life to the fullest...swimming, romping in the snow, befriending strangers, frustrating vetsand of course bringing so much joy tous. He holds a special place in ourhearts. Thank you for bringing him intoour lives and thank you for all that youdo to make our experiences good ones.

JeremiaJohnson

Just wanted you to see Kai’s still withus. She’s 12.5 years old. Her name wasBali when we adopted her.

Older but still loving us!

Wendy Sanders

Dear Friends,

I went for my last walk with my SweetBoy, Seamus, today. He was only 6.5years young, although I am painfullyaware that Boxers have an all-too-shortlife span. His lungs were being crowdedout by blastomycosis lesions. After long, tearful, heart-wrenching discussionswith my vet, I made a decision. MySweet Boy Seamus was deterioratingrapidly right before my eyes.

would like to thank Route 20 Outhouse and Ray Stilbeck, Steve Hawkins,

Martin Karpinski and Randy Treau for letting us host the event and all the

help before and during Hydro-Pawlooza.

We would also like to thank Duncan MacManus from FM 106 for being

A big thank you to Ray and Dan’s Rendering Thanks Foundation for pro-

viding the beer and jello shots for this event and to the Racine Root River

Roller Girls for selling the jello shots. We wish the girls a great season.

Of course the evening would not be a success without our volunteers and

the generous support of those who attended. We hope to see you next year.

It’s the seventh annual Friki Tiki Summer gathering. Please join us at Freddie’s Friki

Tiki bar and grill, located on the waterfront side of the Chancery restaurant, 207

Gaslight Dr. in Racine. Every Monday beginning June 2 up until Labor Day there will be

a Doggy Happy Hour (3 – 7 p.m.) at the outdoor patio catering to dog owners. We

invite dog owners to bring their dogs to dine and drink. Friki Tiki will provide the

four-legged set treats and water bowls. H.O.P.E. Safehouse would like to invite foster

families and adopters to bring their pets for some fun and to promote our adoptable

canines and our organization. Anyone who would like to volunteer to be a HOPE host

or hostess, please contact the office for more details. See you there!

(Continued from page 5)Seamus was, by far, the most devoted

boy I’ve ever had. From just about Day 1,he decided that Mom needed aguardian—a role which he proudly andcapably filled, for the rest of his life. And,while he was at it, what the heck—he’dwatch over his siblings, too. He was stun-ningly handsome and turned heads wher-ever he went. He was serious, reservedand wary of strangers approaching tooquickly without a welcome from me first. But upon seeing me, or others that knewhim well, Seamus would bound up anddown in the air, all the while turning him-self into the well-known Boxer “pretzel.”

Dear Lynn & all at HOPE,

Anna & I are waiting for the weather toget warmer. Anna keeps looking longing-ly out the patio door. If she hears meopen the patio or hallway door, she isthere immediately. She had me doing alot of exercising by chasing her through-out the hallways.

Anna is a very intelligent cat; I can seethe wheels turning as she studies a situa-tion. She is an explorer and probablyknows more about my apartment than Ido. She is growing closer to me every

day; she is starting to be a lap kitty andfrequently climbs into my lap to “help”me with the computer. She follows meeverywhere and at night likes to sleepnext to me.

I love her immensely and feel badly forthe family that had to give her up. Thankyou for the work you all do for HOPE andfor finding wonderful loving pets for us.
