42 Aussie women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer every singleday. That's a staggering 1 5,000 Mothers, Sisters, Daughters that wil l bediagnosed this year.On Tuesday July 1 we can all do something about it.Ladies - on the first of the month 'check your breasts' - I t only takes2 minutes and you can do it anywhere.Then. . . .go to iTunes and type in 'I TOUCH MYSELF PROJECT' andspend $1 .69 to download this song. We'd love to get this track high on the iTunes chart, as 1 00% of theprofits go straight to the Cancer Council . Who knows, we may evenget it up to Number 1 for the first time since the Divinyls firstreleased it!Make sure you do your monthly BREAST CHECK and buy thissong. Hitz939 & Classic Hits 4BU are very proud to get behind thisfantastic initiative.
The old question of originals versus covers reared it’s head againlast month. I sent this questionnaire to a few artists and theresponses are very interesting. The respondents are Matt Farthing(MF) (The Electric Banana, Knee Deep, Stuart Wadham Trio), amostly covers artist nowadays; Harry Heart (HH) of the Harry HeartChrysalis, an originals performer originating from Bundaberg, butwho has gone on to Sydney in pursuit of his art; Matthew Barker(MB) of The Bucketseats, who performs regularly in Bundaberg asboth an originals and covers artist; and a leading (currentlycharting) country artist (lets cal l her LCA) who sti l l plays a mix ofcovers and originals.
Are the majority ofyour gigs covers or originals?Covers (MF)Originals (HH)Majority are cover gigs (MB)Covers – (I put some originals in and don’t tel l people they areoriginals) (LCA)
How often (on average) are your gigs?Three times a month. (MF)One to two a month. (HH)3 gigs per week on average L Ranges from 1 to 6 (MB)3 times per week (LCA)
Is the performance ofmusic in a pub/club setting about art, orabout getting punters in the door? For The Electric Banana, I ’d say getting punters to stay there oncethey’re in. For Knee Deep it’s getting them in and staying, so I ’dhave to say getting punters in the door. (MF)I l ike to think it's about getting punters through the door to thenappreciate the art! Both steps are crucial, otherwise it's notworthwhile. (HH)The venue pays for musicians to entertain the crowd, more puntersmore dollars being spent, more l ikely you wil l be hired again. Bethat original music or covers. (MB)Mostly pub/club (LCA) (She read this question wrong, thinking it was where do younormally play? – Ed)Who has to be more proactive in chasing gigs – original artistsor cover artists?Anyone who wants more gigs whether they play covers or originalshas to be more active in chasing gigs. So neither. However, originals gigs are harder to come by. (MF)Original artists. I f you're good, it's not hard to get cover gigs. I fyou're good, it's sti l l tough to score a good originals gig. (HH)Both need to be proactive. I f you are not up to standard why woulda venue hire you. (MB)Both I would say but I think there are more cover gigs than originalmusic gigs around (LCA)
Covers versus Originals...
As an original artist, are you more willing to play low paid/freegigs to gain exposure to move further up the chain? Were I an original artist currently, I would say that yes I would be. Ihave done so playing originals earl ier in my life. (MF)You have to except that you won't get paid much for a long time asan original artist, but playing for free isn't an option if you take acareer seriously, unless of course it's a charitable cause. (HH)Yes and I have on countless occasions through out the last 7 yearsperforming with a number of originals acts. (MB)Yes – once in a while - not every week (LCA)
As a covers artist, do you do faithful reproductions of theoriginal song, or do you play them your/your band’s way to putyour own flavour to them?I am in The Electric Banana. We do it our way, which I have to addis part of the show/entertainment component of what we do. (MF)I only cover if I busk, and I l ike to keep the song close to it's originalform in that situation. (HH)I feel it necessary to perform covers my own way, with my ownunique spin. We may play covers but we are not a jukebox, music isessential ly about expression and enjoyment, so we always aim tohave fun when performing. (MB)Play them my own way – similar to the original melody so peoplecan sing along but not exactly l ike the original. (LCA)
Have you ever used the words “I’d rather die than play acover?” (or similar) – be honest now!No, I am proud of the manner in which I play covers. (MF)When I was younger and more arrogant, I 'm sure I said somethingl ike that. I don't mind covering songs now, as long as I sti l l enjoyperforming it. No good covering Jimmy Barnes if it breaks yourheart. (HH)Nope (MB)No (LCA)
So, what is the answer? Covers or originals? Or is there any onedefinitive answer? In my view, the answer is different for every artist. You know whatyou want to do better than anyone else – but whichever way yougo, be aware of the path ahead of you. The dream of the rightperson hearing your song and shooting straight to the top is evenless l ikely than winning lotto, but hard work, along with working thesystem, can and wil l produce results when done well – but veryrarely quickly. And that applies everywhere, not just in our town. Beprepeared to play to small groups whilst sti l l putting out your best,be prepared to invest not only your time, but also money - gigsdon't always cover costs, especial ly in the beginning. And if it'soriginals you're focussed on, promotion at a professional level is amust in today's environment. I f you tour your act. . .prepare for a dietof beans, l iving in a moving van with the rest of the band andhoping to hell tonight leaves enough cash for fuel to get to the nextgig. I 'm not saying it isn't a lot of fun, but it's not as glamorous assome may think.Next, we tackle the other elephant in the room....next month.
A familiar face dropped into The Electric Banana line up atSugarland Tavern - always great to see Sanko!
