Warm Greetings to all EA members!

On Sunday the 10th of June, as Perth

was battered by destructive winds and driving rain causing multitudes of damage everywhere with one of the

worst storms in a decade ... about 150 of us tucked into a scrumptious hot meal, sang and danced to some

good old music and ‘bumped & swayed’ to the rhythm of ‘Zumba’ totally oblivious to what was going on outside. It may have been cold outside but

it was hot… hot… hot…at our June monthly lunch

that day for sure!

We tried a few more new things at the lunch and it

came across very well! We locked off the main entry doors and instead utilised the side entry. This immediately gave us more room in the hall with no

congestion at entry point. It also gave us a smoother flow into the main hall and a larger dance area. We also took meal orders for the over 80’s &

90’s and served them with their meals before the kitchen was opened for lunch. This allowed us to provide a special touch for our senior members and

helped our kitchen service times as well. We dished out close to 140 meals in only half an hour!

With numbers attending our Sunday lunches gradually increasing, I would like to take this

opportunity to reiterate on a few practices, so we can have a fair allocation of food for everyone:

Each person can purchase one main meal (plus one side dish if available) and one sweet box …

obviously subject to availability You can purchase your meal for consumption at

the lunch only and not for take away Should there be any extra food after all meals

have been served then these may be available

for take away sales

It would be wonderful if you could assist us with this as I am sure we go to the monthly lunches for a good time to enjoy the mateship, entertainment and

a delicious meal, all for a very reasonable cost.

There are many people behind our monthly Sunday

lunches, the newsletter and all other activities that we organise.

This month we will look at two issues: Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) FMD is a viral disease and extremely contagious, affecting cloven-footed animals including cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, etc – most severe in cattle and pigs. It is spread rapidly between animals with a whole herd becoming infected within 48 hours. The disease is spread by saliva, mucus, milk or faeces as well as on wool, hair, grass, straw, on mud or manure adhering to footwear, clothing, livestock equipment and vehicle tyres. Australia has been free from FMD for over 100 years. An outbreak would be very costly to our beef, lamb and pork export markets – in the region of $16 billion. Passengers arriving in Australia need to declare that they have been on a farm or in contact with livestock. Footwear, sporting and camping equipment may be inspected and cleaned if necessary. In addition, items such as meat, dairy products, straw packaging and equipment used with livestock must be declared on arrival and are subject to inspection.

Caution: If you don’t declare you could receive an on-the-spot fine of $220 or even

prosecuted in a court of law where the penalty could be a fine, imprisonment, or both. Honey Under WA State Quarantine law, honey is prohibited from entry into Western Australia. This is because some hives in other parts Australia and overseas are infected by European Foulbrood Disease. The disease is spread by spores lurking in untreated honey, and is spread by infected bees from hive to hive thereby affecting honey production. All honey, and even royal jelly, has to be declared at WA borders even if you bought it in WA, took it out, and bringing it back again.

HORACE STA MARIA

Horace was born in Malacca on Palm

Sunday, 9th of April 1922, married Iris on

the 1st of October 1948, raised 7 children,

15 grandchildren and 10 great-

grandchildren.

The Trez Amigos was formed In 1949

when Horace, Ernest Rodrigues and

Andrew Carvalho joined up, competed

and won the first Radio Malaya Talentime

with success again in the next year (1950).

Unfortunately, in its infant stage The Trez

Amigos lost Andrew when he took a job in

Singapore. After a short absence Horace

managed to recruit Camilo Gomez. The

highlight of the success of The Trez Amigos

was when they were invited to sing in the

palace of the first Yang Di Pertuan Agong

on the night of Merdeka when there was a

banquet for the heads of the

Commonwealth Nations.

Over the next 5 years, Horace wrote over

60 original songs. He wrote about 10

songs a year, recorded 2 LPs and 2 EPs and

many 78s with His Master’s Voice and

EMI. Horace and The Trez Amigos went

on to become National “Pop” stars. In

1954 the Malaysian Film unit made a

documentary of The Trez Amigos, Horace,

his music and his family.

In the scouting area, Horace was

The State Commissioner for Scouting

The National Campfire leader

A member of the National training

team for Scout Leaders.

aeawa.asn.au THE EURASIAN

In Malacca after the war, Horace

proceeded to develop the Scout camp

at Kundar Beach which was used for

nearly half a century.

For his contribution and service to the

Nation through Scouting and Music,

Horace was awarded a National

Medallion by the King of Malaysia

(PPN), and a State Medallion by the

Governor of Malacca (PBM). He was

also presented at a victory parade after

the war (1945); various medals for

Service during the war years. This

recognition was repeated by the

Australian Government 60 years later.

In August 1972, Horace emigrated to

Australia in search of a better life for his

family. Here he continued his teaching

career at St Marks (Chisholm) in

Bedford from 1974 to 1985 after

teaching at St Francis Institution,

Malacca for many years.
