Famous Face

Our Famous Face this month is Geoff Rowe, otherwise known asTheWest Country’s top comedian ‘Jethro’. A Cornish man throughand through, Jethro was born in St Buryan in 1948 and went toschool in St Just. He has never lost his distinctive Cornish accent, and his jokes celebrate his heritage, the colourfulcharacters of the West Country, family life and the quirky ruralplaces and traditions of the places he loves.

As a young man his working life started conventionally – Geoffwas apprenticed as a carpenter and worked as a timber man in atin mine. Out of hours he participated in the St Just and DistrictOperatic Society and it was during this period that he found hehad a talent for making people laugh as well as singing.

Jethro got his first break on TV in the programme TreasureHunt, where he played a pirate co-host. He went on to becomea household name on television starring alongside Jim Davidson and Des O’Connor during the 1990s. Asuccessful career ensued, with numerous tours, stage appearances and videos, plus his own show ‘The JethroJunction’ and an appearance at The Royal Variety Show in front of The Queen.

Off stage a quiet and private person, Geoff enjoys country pursuits such as clay pigeon shooting and horses. He has his own stables and proudly shows his horses at events around the country. A supporter of variouscharitable causes, Jethro notably raised £20,000 for the Bristol Cancer Open Scanner Appeal.

Geoff runs his own venue ‘Jethro’s Club’ in his home town of Lewdown, Devon. Here in Gloucestershire,Jethro fans will be able to see him perform at The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury on July 5th, or at The TownHall in Cheltenham on 3rd December as part of a nationwide tour.

Have you ever been to The Mayflower? We have visited many times over the pastthree decades and were very lucky to beinvited along to sample the delicious cuisineagain, so we could remind or inform all ourreaders about this town centre gem. Those of you who have had the pleasure of

dining in this top quality restaurant will alreadybe aware of the excellent standards deliveredto ensure your total satisfaction. If you havenever been, and you enjoy Chinese andCantonese food, please don’t let yourselvesmiss out any longer – you won’t bedisappointed! The restaurant is owned by Chun Kong, his

sister Kai and brother Chris. In October thethree siblings will be celebrating their 30thanniversary of serving Cheltenham residentsand visitors. There is no doubt that ‘consistency’has played a major role in enabling the trio toreach this milestone and, as we witnessed yetagain, the maintenance of such high standardsis going to serve them well for many years tocome.

Another major factor in the restaurant’s longsuccess is the attitude of the people. Chun said:“Every day our objective is to providecustomers with a great experience. Whetherthey are new to the restaurant, or one of themany people who regularly visit us and havebecome friends, it’s our job to ensure we meettheir expectations. We enjoy what we do andget real satisfaction from seeing our guestshappy and relaxed.”

Chun’s passion for his work ismatched by an enthusiasm for Cognac! No, he’s not drinking it all day long, butloves the history associated with certainCognac houses. A lovely feature withinthe restaurant is his display cabinetcontaining some rare and beautifulbottles. It’s usually left locked andalarmed, but Chun kindly posed for apicture with his prize possession – abottle of ‘Black Pearl’ Louis XIII RemyMartin Champagne Cognac – number84 of only 786 produced! As always, we were given awonderfully warm welcome by Chunand the team, and immediately feltrelaxed – the décor is clean, bright andthe ambience is complete withpleasant background music. We were joined by our daughterand, much to our son’s disgust (he isstill away at university), one of herfriends who – I noticed – wasconstantly nodding her head inapproval at each dish she tried! We didn’t choose anything – Chun

asked if there was anything we particularly likedor disliked, and then we accepted hisrecommendations. This may seem a bit lazy onour part, but ‘leaving it to the expert’ has servedus well every time we’ve visited. The meal started in the most delightful way

with an opportunity to try ‘a bit of everything’ inThe Mayflower Special Hors D’oeuvre platter –Mandarin Spare Ribs, Crispy Spring Rolls, SatayChicken on Skewers, Sesame Seed PrawnCanapé and Crispy Fried Seaweed. Enjoymentis always enhanced by those ‘finishing touches’– the food is beautifully presented, plates are

hot, water is on the table and finger bowls arebrought to help you clean up before the nextcourse.T

chicken with black bean sauce, sliced steakcantonese and crispy fried chilli beef – each dishfull of flavour and exciting the taste buds. Notthat you need to, but we enjoy making theexperience all the more authentic with ourattempts to use chopsticks! Now, to do our job properly, we had to have

a dessert! I opted for the toffee banana withsesame seeds and the other guests hadtoffee pineapple, apple fritter andicecream. If you’ve never tried thetoffee desserts before, they’re also ‘amust’ – just tell yourself you’re not full! The Mayflower’s menu is certainly

impressive – everyone is catered for.Along with an array of pork, beef, chicken and duck dishes, there’s afabulous selection of seafood –including Dover Sole, Monk Fish,Scallops, Squid and Lobster – plus anextensive range of vegetariancourses. Our first experience of

The Mayflower – almost 30 yearsago – was their lunchtime menu.Nowadays you can choose from a

good daily selection of starters, main coursesand desserts, but you don’t need to have allthree. Situated in Clarence Street, therestaurant is such a lovely retreat from the officeor respite from shopping. Just meeting up withfriends at lunchtime for a chat and a couple ofstarters can be more cost-effective andenjoyable than ‘grabbing a sandwich’. Withevening service starting at 5.30pm, it’s alsoperfect for pre-theatre dining or a relaxing mealstraight from work as a prelude to a night out.Dining at The Mayflower is so much more

than ‘eating food’ and represents excellent valuefor money. The restaurant also provides a fulltakeaway service and, if you’re able to eat outon a ‘school night’, why not take advantage oftheir brilliant offer on Mondays – a massive 25%discount on food ordered from the main à lacarte menu!

The India Lounge – situated in Suffolk Parade – is a verymodern looking Indian restaurant with a warm and friendlyatmosphere. The light and airy dining rooms are inviting –lovely tall ceilings, contemporary art on the walls, comfortable high backed leather chairs, clean white tablecloths and sparkling cutlery. Everything is perfect for you torelax and indulge.Arriving at 7pm, we asked to take some photos of the

staff before it got busy – good job we did, it was buzzing by7.30! We had some fresh crispy papadoms with a selectionof mango chutney, raita and pickles to tickle our taste budswhilst we perused the menu.I chose the Chicken Tikka starter and my husband wentfor the Tandoori Mix. Both were excellent – the Tikka waswonderfully tasty with a bit of a kick to it, complementedand cooled down by the fresh side salad.

Cooked fresh to orderLamb Hyderabadi was my main course option – cubes oflamb with onion, tomato, peppers and chef’s special spices. It wasn’t a dish I’d tried before, but I’m glad I have as it wasdelicious. My husband – who couldn’t make up his mind –was helped with his choice by Ali who manages the ‘frontof house’ team. On recommendation, he went for PudinaLamb – tender pieces of lamb in ginger, garlic and mint in ared chilli sauce. Now I would have gone for this myself butwas put off by the label of ‘Hot’, but Ali said he would askfor it to be toned down a little – an obvious benefit ofhaving everything cooked fresh to order. It was superb –just enough chillies so as not to kill the taste buds and allowfor the succulent, tender lamb to be savoured with the freshmint. All this was topped off by some perfectly cooked Pilau

Rice and the hottest and freshest naan breads you could

have asked for – a great sign of the quality of any up-marketIndian restaurant. We were very naughty and decided to have a dessert too, trying the Fiorentina and Mystique Mango, both of whichwent down a treat – just helping to clean the palette!

Brilliant serviceI must confess we do a bit of ‘eaves dropping’ and ‘peoplewatching’ while enjoying our food – we like to hear othercustomers’ comments and see how the staff act with them. There was so much positivity in the room, largely down tothe brilliant service – the waiting staff were full of fun, relaxedand yet maintained a courteous manner throughout. Theyhelped numerous guests deliberating over what to have, offering suggestions and describing dishes to help themselect a meal they’d be sure to enjoy.Throughout our time at India Lounge, numerous peoplecollected takeaways – clearly a thriving aspect of the service– but, however busy they seemed to be, no-one waitedlong for their food. Compliments to head chef Shahin andhis ‘back room’ team – excellent food delivered toschedule!

Courtesy of Ali and Shahin, we’re giving you theopportunity to dine at the India Lounge for free! You and afriend will be treated to a 3-course meal each and a bottleof house wine to share. For your chance to win, simply enter our draw by sendingyour name, address and telephone number(s) to: IndiaLounge Draw, The Local Answer, 1 Ullenwood Court,Ullenwood, Cheltenham GL53 9QS. Delicious DishesGarlic and Chilli

Steak Stir Fry~ Serves 4 ~

You will need:Steak of your choice (I use rump) and quantity upto you (depends how big a portion you want!).1 clove of garlic, crushed or use lazy garlic.15ml (1tbsp) root ginger, peeled and grated.120ml (8tbsp) chilli sauce.60ml (4tbsp) soy sauce.250g (9oz) ready to eat medium egg noodles.1 red pepper.1 bunch spring onions.30ml (2tbsp) fresh coriander.40g (1.5oz) cashew nuts.Method:1 Cut the steak into strips and place in a bowl withthe chilli sauce, soy sauce, garlic and ginger.Mix together, cover and place in the fridge for atleast 20 minutes, but better if you do this in themorning ready for teatime - it gives the steaklonger to marinate.

2 Finely dice the red pepper. Chop the coriander.

Cut the spring onion into strips. This can all bedone ahead and stored in the fridge.

3 When ready to eat, in a large wok, cook the redpepper for a couple of minutes, add the steakand marinade and stir-fry for several minutesuntil the steak is cooked to your liking.

4 Meanwhile heat up the noodles according to thepacket instructions and stir into the steak.

5 Finally add the coriander, spring onions andcashew nuts, and serve. This is so easy to makeas you can prepare it all early in the day then itjust takes a few minutes at teatime to cook.Remember to add fresh coriander beforeserving, it really does make the dish.

Café René have been successful sponsors of the GloucesterRhythm and Blues Festival for the last nine years and arelooking forward to hosting a bigger and better event in Julyto celebrate their 10th anniversary. The festival has grown to be one of the most recognisedevents in the City’s calendar – bringing people togetherfrom all over the world to enjoy this fantastic, free musiccelebration. In previous years Café René owner Paul Soden hasbeen proud to host The Animals, Larry Miller, MikeSanchez, Perry Foster, Innes Sibun, Paul Lamb and TheKing Snakes to name but a few, and he is keen for theline up to evolve every year. This summer’s line up is totally ‘Blues’ and asstrong as it’s ever been with headline act Big BoyBloater (right), described by Jools Holland as “oneof the great blues men of our time”, joined by anarray of brilliant musicians including the legendaryLazy Lester performing with Dani Wilde.

Raising money for charityOrchestrating the festival is hard work, but a labourof love for Paul, festival organiser Jojo and the team atCafé René. But it’s all worth it – the crew delight in theincredibly positive effects the Festival brings in avariety of ways. First and foremost the festival givesterrific pleasure to all who attend – great entertainersperforming great music. It’s brilliant for Gloucester that thisevent has become a ‘must’ for music lovers – it really helps putour City ‘on the map’. Drawing thousands of visitors to Gloucesterover the week is welcome news for local hotels, pubs, restaurantsand other businesses who realise the benefits of the influx. And, ofequal importance, ‘much needed’ cash is raised for charity. This year the chosen charity is Macmillan Cancer Support. The crew are hopingto surpass last year’s total of just over £2,000 raised for Sue Ryder Care.Along with the musical entertainment visitors can enjoy BBQs, pig roast and a RealAle & Cider Festival too. Café René present an artist/band each week night prior tothe free legendary spectacle of the outdoor stage on Greyfriars Green bringing thefestival to a fantastic finalé!

IInn tthhee GGaarrddeennwith Julia Smith

I don’t really do much garden maintenance any moreapart from in my overgrown jungle where to behonest you don’t get to see many weeds as there isso much planting they have to fight to survive! However I was thinking about it the other day andimagining having 20 minutes to do something to tidyup a garden before visitors arrived what would bethe tasks to do? I would plump for weeding the front10cm of the borderleaving bare earth, cutting the grass andtrimming the edges.Obviously some ofyou have moregarden than me andthis would take anhour or two, but it isthe equivalent of aquick vacuum upand spraying polisharound in the house– it really looks morethan the time it takesand you can ignorethe back of theborder especially atthis time of year when it is probably full to burstingwith luxurious growth unless you have the time.

You may have problems with your Bay treeshaving yellowed, distorted and curled leaves at thetips, this is caused by Bay suckers which are sap-feeding insects. They are prevalent at this time of theyear. Prune off affected stems to keep it under controland remove the leaf litter from around the base ofthe Bay. I wouldn’t spray with anything as you will bewanting to use the leaves in cooking but if you don’tand want to, use a contact insecticide.

Plant of the month is the Leucanthemum xsuperbum which has a large white daisy flower ontall stems and will bloom well every year. They tendto spread so don’t be afraid to dig up any you don’twant. They can flop, so in early spring construct aring of canes with criss-crossed string over them oruse a ready- made plant support like the grids on legsthat come in plastic coated wire. Dead-head regularlyto prolong flowering. Team them up with Pinks andScabious to create that cottage garden feel.

As always if you fancy a change in your garden, beit just a replanted border or a complete gardendesign, do contact me by mobile or email (detailsbelow), or visit my website. Make this year a specialone for your garden!

Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

The last 12 months have not been great for a lotof household names on the High Street, with Clinton Cards, Habitat, Peacocks andAlliedCarpets amongst those companies enteringadministration. Interestingly they representcompletely different sectors, making it difficult toidentify which sector seems to be struggling most. But struggling they most certainly are, with theexception largely of food stores, which are in theʻhave to buyʼ category, in so much as we all stillneed to buy food, whatever money we have at ourdisposal. Besides which, most of these stores areout of town now; food retail long since left the HighStreet. No, itʼs the ʻnice to buyʼ stores that are at greatestrisk. Not even a household brand is guaranteedsurvival or success. Just ask the aforementionedcompanies. There are many factors contributing to theproblems. Some of them are obvious – we are allaware of the move towards internet shopping andthere are no signs of let up in the levels of businessrates. Quarterly rent payments fall due again atthis time of year, when those stores that arestruggling with cash flow have to determinewhether or not to commit to another threemonthsʼ trading. The Government would have us spend, but dothey really provide tangible incentives for us to doso? And then thereʼs the thorny question of howwe can spend what we maybe havenʼt got.No itʼs not an easy time to be in the retail sectorand the likelihood is that further business failureswill happen in the next 12 months as well.

drive to reduce crime is well into our new year andinitial observations from the turn of the year look good.Crime is down locally by a quarter compared to lastyear with Operation SPA having a positive effect on thedisturbing burglary rate with plenty of thieves locked upwho are hopefully enjoying their little trips to theexercise yard.Because we have now broken the back of the burglaryproblem we now have the opportunity to concentratemore on the various parts of our crime reduction planunder SPA, that is helping victims, targeting offenders, andpatrolling intelligently in locations at relevant times. Thiscreates opportunities to catch the offenders who are stillout there, the targets now being push bikes and theft fromunlocked cars. As is probably quite clear to most people, catching a thief in the early hours who is trying car doorhandles for opportunist thieving is about as easy as catchingan anaconda in the swamplands of South America; but bytrying to second guess where these offences will be andtargeting the people who we believe are committing theoffences we can make our own luck.

We also have some secret weapons in our armourybut they will remain as secret and as precious as a pair ofaces in your hand when playing poker. You may have heard that we have a new Chief

Constable and that we will soon be having aCommissioner. These changes can sometimes lead tochanges at the front end but I am confident that yourlocal policing team will continue to deliver a first classservice and will continue to keep you safe from harm.Lets hope the feel good factor stays with us and have anice summer. And remember to keep them doorslocked!
