CENTRAL NEWS & VIEWS Provost William Radke, PhD

Another great UCO year is ahead and what a year it will be. We bid a fond farewell to President Webb

and we say hello to a new President and an old friend. As we look forward to the new academic year

recall that during the past year a new Tenure and Promotion policy ensuring that faculty will be re-

warded for their participation in Transformative Learning became a reality. The new Center for Trans-

formative Learning opened and the fourth annual Transformative Learning Conference was a great

success. The results of the conference will be available in the inaugural publication of the UCO Trans-

formative Learning Press. Fundraising and grant writing goals were met and exceeded and several

new academic programs were implemented. Faculty, staff and students earned a myriad of coveted

awards and recognition and our enrollment reached a new all-time high. Though UCO’s State allocation was reduced we

weathered the storm without furloughs or lay offs and continued to plan and build for the future.

This year we will:

Continue to develop ways to incorporate Transformative Learning into distance courses.

Further the collaboration between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs by creating the position of Faculty Liai-

son to the Volunteer and Service Learning Center

Complete the initial year of Program Prioritization

Finish our preparation for the Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation visit in November of 2012

Initiate a new strategic planning effort

There is more to do but as before we will accomplish these and the other tasks by sharing and mutual effort as we strive

to help students learn by providing transformative experiences so that they may become productive, creative, ethical and

engaged citizens and leaders.

Central's Department of Design recently won four national ADDY Awards, the most of any institution of

higher learning in the country. ―We are thrilled," said Ruki Ravikumar, MFA, chair of Central’s Department

of Design. "Our design students have always been outstanding and highly sought after. They leave here

ready to succeed in a competitive job market.‖

Courtney James, Assistant Director, Campus Activities and Events, was named OCSPA New Professional

of the Year for 2011. She received the award at the annual conference. Courtney’s supervisor Kay Robin-

son nominated her based on the great work she has done for Central thus far, including starting Big Pink

Volleyball and raising over $3,000 in the first year.

Shandise Jones, Office Manager for Human Resources, is excited to announce her recent engagement to

Dave Brown, State Auditor for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. The happy couple believe in short en-

gagements, as is evidenced by their rapidly approaching wedding date — July 3, 2011. The ceremony will

be performed at the Marland Mansion in Ponca City. Congratulations Shandise and Dave!

Mercy Clinic at UCO will be getting a full-time physician. Dr. Stephanie Husen will be arriving on Monday,

July 18th. Mercy has made changes based on the needs of our university and outcome measures related

to utilization, college health, and student needs. Dr. Husen is a physician as well as a licensed physical

therapist and she has previous college health experience. She is excited about integrating into the college

environment to meet the needs of our students, faculty, staff, families, and our community. She is medi-

cally qualified in internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, and sports medicine.

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK HUMAN RESOURCES

After almost a year in the making, including input and review from most every area of our campus, the

newly revised Employee Handbook is complete! By now area supervisors should have received and are

in the process of distributing CDs of the Handbook for all their faculty, staff and adjuncts. The official

copy is located on our website. Familiarize yourself with the handbook to pose any questions you may

have during one of our bi-weekly Question & Answer sessions to be held throughout July. The ac-

knowledgment form on page six of the document is to be signed and returned to Human Resources Box

171 for placement in your personnel file. Did you know that UCO is required by law to communicate essential employment policy statements to

all employees? In the newly revised handbook these are communicated in the form of policies, in their

entirety, primarily in the beginning of the book. Other select, non-essential policies are noted, but may or

may not be printed in their entirety. Full descriptions of policies are available and accessible on-line at the Administration, HR area of

the UCO website. The remainder of the handbook is designed to promote our benefits and highlight reasons why we are an employer

of choice!

The handbook is designed to be a quick reference only. It is not a replacement for benefit plan documents, or for the policies and pro-

cedures that are on-line. The handbook is a source document that can and will be updated and revised as needed, on an ongoing basis.

Updates will be announced and posted on the HR website, resulting in the “official” copy of the handbook always residing on-line at

the Administration, HR area of the UCO website.

HR will hold Q&A sessions twice a week over the next several weeks to offer employees an opportunity to ask questions and be given

answers regarding the new handbook. (Register online at the Learning Center, Employee Handbook Q&A.) We will offer more ses-

sions after school starts so more faculty and/or student employees can attend.

Employees who may not have access to a computer may request and receive a printed copy of the handbook by visiting the HR office

(Lillard, Room 204). Below is a summary table of changes to policies that are specifically addressed in the handbook. Most changes

are necessary for legal compliance, or to embrace the philosophy of the University that has evolved over time. Questions? Feel free to

contact Diane Feinberg, Director Employee Relations at extension 2658, or by email, [email protected].

UCO is an official Sponsor of 2011 LibertyFest

Summerstock Productions has partnered with the University of Central

Oklahoma for its summer 2011 entertainment season.

June featured ―Seussical‖ based on the books of Dr. Seuss and center-

ing around the power of imagination and belief in oneself.

In July Summerstock will present ―Annie Get Your Gun‖ through the university’s Mitchell Hall box office at (405) 974-

3375. ―Annie Get Your Gun‖ is based on the true life story of Annie Oakley. It’s the story of a backwoods gal with a sure-

shot and quick wit who challenges dashing marksman Frank Butler to be the star of Buffalo Bill’s traveling show. Sparks

fly as the competition and romance heat up. The musical features some of Broadway’s most recognized songs includ-

ing ―There’s No Business Like Show Business,‖ ―Anything You Can Do,‖ ―I Got the Sun In The Morning,‖ and ―You Can’t

Get A Man With A Gun.‖

Renee Anderson will be playing the lead role of Annie Oakley. Anderson grew up in Edmond

and is a staple in the Oklahoma City theatre scene. She has performed for the Oklahoma

City Philharmonic, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Repertory Theater, Carpenter

Square Theatre and The Pollard Theatre and starred in regional productions at Dallas Sum-

mer Musicals, Kansas City Starlight Theater and Atlanta Theater of the Stars. ―Annie Get

Your Gun‖ was her first professional production at age 13.

―I played Minnie, one of Annie's sister's. That was more than 20 years ago and every time I

think about that show, I remember it like it was yesterday,‖ said Anderson. ―I learned so

many things being involved in that particular show. It holds wonderful memories for me and I

can't wait to do it again.‖

Ticket prices for both shows are $15 for adults and $10 for children for the evening shows. Matinees will be $10 for

adults and $8 dollars for children. Season ticket holders will receive the matinee price for evening shows. Patrons may

either use a credit card when ordering by phone or pay by cash or check at the Mitchell Hall box office window, located

at the northeast corner of University Drive and Main Street in Edmond. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday. For more information, go to www.summerstockok.com

The Regional University System of Oklahoma

(RUSO) Board of Regents have formally ap-

proved naming the UCO Forensic Science Insti-

tute in honor of UCO President W. Roger Webb,

who will retire July 31 after 14 years of leading

the university.

Central’s seven vice presidents, along with

Dwight Adams, Ph.D., director of the institute,

requested the gesture in a letter addressed to

the regents signed by each of them.

―The Forensic Science Institute is one of most

prominent and recognizable symbols of the lasting legacy Roger Webb will leave at Central, and one that’s brought na-

tional recognition to the university. While its virtually impossible to fully recognize his impact, we felt this was a fitting, ap-

propriate way to honor him,‖ said Steve Kreidler, Central’s executive vice president.

Adding to the honor, New Hampshire-based landscape architect Alan Saucier and a team of artists completed work this

week on a series of etched glass murals featuring enlarged renderings of Webb’s thumbprint on windows throughout the

W. Roger Webb Forensic Science Institute.

Webb said he was humbled by the honor. ―There are so many others that are

deserving of this incredible, unbelievable honor, and it’s difficult for me to even

express how I feel. I do know that the Forensic Science Institute is a great

source of pride for the city of Edmond and our university. Dr. Adams and many

others envisioned this program as becoming the best forensic science teaching

program and facility in the country, and I believe that not only will that happen,

but that it will someday become one of the best in the world,‖ Webb said.

Among his many accomplishments at Central, Webb established the university

as key crime-fighting partner with federal, state and local law enforcement

through the growth of the FSI. Since the institute’s building opened in January

2010, Central’s Forensic Science program continues to solidify its reputation as

one of the top programs of its kind in the nation, providing an unparalleled educational experience for students, as well as

partnerships and resources to local, state and national law enforcement and forensics communities, including the Okla-

homa State Bureau of Investigation and the State Medical Examiners Office.

Webb began his career in law enforcement, working in

the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety for 12 years

and serving as the state Commissioner of Public Safety

from 1974-1978.

While at Central, Webb has been a national voice in cam-

pus safety, including emergency preparedness and vio-

lence prevention, and testified before the U.S. Congress

in 2007 about the subject following the Virginia Tech Uni-

versity shootings. He currently serves on the board for

the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism and

is a member of the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Hall of

Fame. For more information on the W. Roger Webb Fo-

rensic Science Institute, visit www.uco.edu/forensics.
