  • President Joe Gedeon called the meeting to order at 12:15. President Joe welcomed everyone to the meeting and told us that we were having a soundcheck from our performing group! “Love in only true in fairy tales, I am a believer, You can dance…but save the last dance for me, The moon is the only light we see, Stand by me, Locomotion, I can’t get no satisfaction, Get your motor running, Looking for adventure, and Born to be wild! President Joe then introduced our President Elect Steve Koyama. He also thanked Past President Carol Riley for being our scribe. Past President Dave Livingston inspired us. He told us that he and his wife, Pam, just visited Pearl Harbor. He saw 40 warships from 38 different countries. They also saw the Harold Estes Leadership Center. President Dave said he is so proud to be Rotarian and proud of all that we do for our community and the world. Past President Tony Gedeon led us in the Pledge to our American flag. Guests were introduced by Past President Chad Adams. Past District Governor Roy King introduced Eugene and Ikko Tomita introduced Kenzo and Rika. Katherine Henski introduced three guests from her campaign. Past District Governors Roy King and Phil Sammer were introduced. Past Presidents were introduced. We had no shell leigh guests today, so President Joe said we would sing the Welcome Song to our special guests. We never sounded better! Magda Alexander shared birthdays and anniversaries with us. Birthdays: Faye Zasada 7/1, Karen Smith 7/18, Thomas Hall 7/20, and Ron Sauder 7/25. Anniversaries: Joseph Gedeon 2009, Kathy Higa 2013, Gloria King 2013, Patti Look 2014, Stephen Morgan 2013, Allan Silva 2014, Sarah Tenney 2000, Robert Walker 2016, Gale Warshawsky 2010. President Joe made one announcement: Service project scheduled for July 30, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Walmart…Back to School Drive. Please let Stephen Morgan know if you can assist. Past District Governor Roy King introduced our guests: The Langley Ukulele Ensemble under the direction of Paul Luongo…and Past President Peter Luongo! In 1998, Peter Luongo was a Rotarian in Langley, British Columbia. He called Past District Governor Roy King and said that his Ukulele group was coming to Hawaii and would like to perform for some Rotary groups! They have been here every summer since 1998. Peter is a Rotary Past President and a retired educator. He has given over the Ukulele Ensemble to his son, Paul,

who has done a wonderful job transitioning the group. They have performed 50 concerts so far this year. They have pins, CDs, and t-shirts that can be bought that will help the group pay their way to Hawaii for their concerts. Peter told us that now there are more gentlemen in the group and there is now a multi-cultural element to the group. All members are now playing traditional ukuleles, that are handmade from Oregon. The 21 ensemble members range in age from 12 to 21 years, and are students attending middle school, secondary or post-secondary institutions. The group’s motto is “Enriching Lives through Music”. The members are challenged to strive towards excellence in musical performance and to use music as a vehicle through which they can be role models and leaders amongst their peers. Paul Luongo introduced the group by saying there is a next generation theme. They would start with a mash u of songs (medley!). We would hear four songs: Queen would be the foundation, then Stevie Wonder, Bruno Mars, and Wild Cherry. This will depict the next generation. We heard: Bites the Dust, Very Superstitious, and La Bamba. Next we were told about the Eagles’ George Harrison who loved the ukulele. George performed Devil in the Deep Blue Sea. Paul McCartney, in respect for George, performed Let it Be. Our Club really enjoyed hearing American Pie and listening to the story of its generation…written by a Canadian who was taken by the airline accident that killed Frankie Vallie, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper Richardson. Next, we heard The Hall of the Mountain King…which is often used for commercials. The group then shared what the Bohemian Rhapsody would have sound like if Queen knew anything about Ukuleles. We heard Real life or fantasy? Easy come, easy go, Any way the wind blows, So you think you can love me? Nothing really matters to me. The final song we heard was Aloha Spirit: Aloha is a promise. The sun will shine again. Hopes and dreams. Strength, Beauty of life and light, Helping hand, Deep in the heart of Hawaii is Aloha. I love you. Peter drew the lucky ticket for the Portfolio Investment. Kathryn Henski won, but pulled a red marble. President Joe ended the meeting by leading the Club in the Four Way Test. Respectfully submitted, PP Carol Riley

    WEEKLY REPORT—WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2016

    Solar Powering the Bookmobile

Rotarian Thomas Hall attended the D5000 District Assem-bly on April 23, 2016 at Momilani elementary school along with several other members of Waikiki Rotary. This was Thomas' first district assembly and he eagerly participated in all sessions and to hear what all the presenters shared. He was really interested to hear from the Hawaii Literacy Foundation and thought to himself, "How can I and the RC of Waikiki Help?" Thomas met with the Executive Director Suzanne Skjold and this project was born.

Ms. Skjold requested some re-fit projects to their 6-year-old Bookmobile, including Solar Powered Electric Fans and shelving repairs. Thomas heard the calling, and just hap-pens to be a Solar Power expert! Thomas met with his club's board and asked for funding to do this project, parts at cost and no labor cost. Thomas received overwhelming

    approval.

On July 1st, Thomas arranged a group from the Rotary Club of Wai-kiki to install the solar powered fans and storage. Thomas also recruited his friend Jim Miller a retired Navy sub-mariner to help repair some broken book shelving

several weeks before the solar installation.

The solar powered fans cools down the Bookmobile and allows a more pleasant environment for Keiki and adults when the Book-mobile is parked at one of the 14 sites they visit each week on the leeward coast, which include homeless shelters, and public

housing in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the state.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Waikiki and the Rotarians who donated their time and energy to install the solar panel on the top of the Bookmobile. They were Thomas Hall, Jay Ogden, Steve Morgan and Club President Joe Gedeon.

Books were also donated to the Bookmobile for distribution to kids in need.

Congratulations to Rotary in Hawaii for helping a communi-ty and those in need.
