The Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Colum-bus Council 11778 (aka the Fab Five) and the Knights of Columbus Council 11778 ask all pa-rishioners to save Saturday, October 7th for a Spaghetti Dinner to support our parish seminari-an Matthew Dobbs. This will be after the 5:00pm Mass

  • From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT JULY IS THE MONTH OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS!

    MISSIONARY CO-OP

This coming week, Fr. Peter Mandina of the Diocese of Machakos in Kenya (Africa) will offer all the Mass-es in the air-conditioned comfort (!) of our parish church. This is part of the “Missionary Plan of Cooperation”, in which all the parishes of the Archdiocese are compelled to take part each year, and it’s a good thing. It gives us a chance both to be informed about the missionary activity of the Catholic Church and to help in whatever way we can to support the work of our missionaries. I will take the occasion to do a bit of travelling and Fr. Mandina will offer Mass in my absence. Please welcome him and support his work!

    IN CONCERT: MAESTRO DANIEL KUEHLER

This is the big day. Danny Kuehler comes home to play for us, and what a show it looks to be! Spread the word and invite your friends, for everyone is welcome to this great recital. Last year’s performance was a mas-terpiece and this year’s looks to be even greater. Our humble lunchroom will become Carnegie Hall at 3:00PM today as the maestro performs.

TO HONOR THE PATRON OF OUR ARCHDIOCESE AND CELBRATE THE FRENCH HERIT-AGE OF FLORISSANT

Here’s the menu for our “Fete of French Fare” on the feast of St. Louis IX (Friday, August 25): A) Vichichoise (chilled potato soup), B) Boeuf Bourguignon, C) Cornish Hen Fricasse, D) Baked Salmon Pas-try Wrap, E) French Bistro Salad, F) Dauphinoise (French Gratin potatoes), G) Haricots Verts (green beans) w/shallots, H) Carottes Braisees Au Beurre (carrots in butter) I) Baquette avec Beurre (French bread with butter), and for dessert: Crème Brulee, Swain Eclairs, Mousse in pastry cups, and Truffles. (What…you were expecting French toast and French fries?) In addition, a variety of French wines will be served. If you miss this one, you will never forgive yourself!

    SHAW’S GARDEN NORTH

I just wanted to say a word of commendation once again for our garden committee, who have braved the recent heat to keep our parish gardens alive and beautiful: well done and Godspeed! in addition, you’ll notice that a lot of necessary tree trimming was done this past week, too. I hated to see the Bradford Pear trees lose so much of their foliage, but if we don’t trim them back, a strong wind will very likely uproot them and we’ll lose them altogether.

    MRS. KAUFFMAN‘S NEW JOB

As some of you probably already know, Mrs. Kauffman is working in our parish office part-time. Frankly, she’s such a dedicated worker and asset to our parish that you hate to lose someone like her. I was delighted, therefore, when she accepted my invitation to keep using her considerable skills to serve our people. Right now, her job is two-fold: first, to help our kids transition into their new schools next fall, and, second, I’ve put her in charge of “senior services”. That means that she will be keeping track of people who are recuperating, whether in a hospital, their own home, or a nursing home, and see to it that their spiritual needs (i.e., Commun-ion, Anointing, etc.) are being met. So don’t be surprised if you stop by the office and see her there…she’s al-ready doing a great job!

    UPCOMING EVENTS

    QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC

This one is going to be on grab-bag of disjoined trivia, all of which having some reference to the Archdi-ocese of St. Louis, its history and its parishes. See how much you know about where you live:

    1. Name the high school soccer team that won the silver medal in the 1904 Olympics. 2. Name the parish men’s soccer team that won the bronze medal in the same Olympiad. 3. What did John Thornton do that was so im-portant in the history of the archdiocese? 4. What layman founded the first hospital in St. Louis (and west of the Mississippi)? 5. What great thing did Bryan Mullanphy & Dr. Moses Linton do in local Church history? 6. What two professional athletes have served as permanent deacons in the Archdiocese? 7. Name the various institutions of our archdio-cese named for our former archbishops. 8. Who was the Catholic layman who helped change the map of Europe and form the nation of Czechoslovakia after World War I? 9. Name the oldest parish and the oldest church building in the archdiocese. 10. What St. Louis church was recently named the most beautiful church in the U. S.?

ANSWERS: 1. Christian Brothers College (C.B.C.) 2. St. Rose of Lima (on Goodfellow Ave., now, sadly, closed)…only three teams showed up for the soccer event in 1904; the team from Canada won the gold and the St. Rose team tied two games and lost their other two (never scoring a goal) but won the bronze, anyway, because even though they finished last, last was third place, and third place means “bronze medal”! 3. When he died in 1858, Thornton left his entire fortune to the Archdiocese of St. Louis, some $579,440.06 (probably worth over $100,000,000 today) 4. John Mullanphy 5. Established the first foundation of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in America (1845) 6. Pro-Bowl linebacker Larry Stallings and Hall-of-Fame round-baller “Easy” Ed Macauley 7. Bp. DuBourg High School, Rosati-Kain High School (named for two former bishops), Kenrick Seminary (and there was a “Kenrick High School” years ago), Cardinal Glennon Hospital and Cardinal Glennon College, Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School, the Cardinal Carberry Campus (of Catholic Charities), and the Cardinal Rigali Center (formerly Kenrick Sem-inary), which is located on Archbishop May Drive in Shrewsbury, Mo. 8. Knight of St. Gregory, Dr. Hynek Dostal (who also edited the Czech-language newspaper, HLAS [“The Voice”]) 9. Oldest parish: Ste. Genevieve (1759), oldest church: old St. Ferdinand Shrine (Florissant, 1821) 10. The church of my Baptism, St. Francis de Sales!

  • Features: ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT

(JANUARY THRU JUNE 2017) In an effort to be good stewards of the contributions made to the SVDP Society, we continue to make home visits in teams of two Vincentians to assess the needs of our clients. From January 1 to June 30, our members made 94 home visits. In addition to the home visits, many con-tacts are made by phone. There were 422 persons helped by single or multiple visits to a household. There were 245 Vincentian hours involved in those home visits plus the many phone hours required. Assistance was given to 64 families to avoid Laclede disconnection. Assistance was given to 62 families to avoid Ameren disconnection. Assistance was given to 2 families to avoid MO-AM water disconnection. Through the Beds for Neighbors program we were able to get 12 beds for families. In addition to utility assistance, we were able to help people with SVDP Thrift Store vouchers to help with clothing & household vouchers. We were able to get Thrift Store vouchers because of the response when the SVDP truck was at St. Angela’s in April. We continue to be one of the largest contributors to the TEAM food pantry with our monthly Food Drives which also allows us sometimes to take food packages directly to our clients.

In the first six months of this year we disbursed $15,623 that had been donated by the generous parishioners at St. Angela’s, from the envelope in the parish packet, the brown envelopes at the back of church, the Men’s Club dinner & the Marian Foundation. We have also received funds from the Main Council Office, the North District SVDP Society, the Rise-n-Shine Fund Raiser & the Bridges Fund. We were also able to help 4 families avoid eviction with the Rent Fund via the Main Council Office. The members of the SVDP Society at St. Angela Merici appreciate the help of our generous parishioners in this ministry.

WHERE IS MARY ANN!!?? This is something like “Where is Waldo” but I am easier to locate! I want to thank all of you who come up to me and ask “How am I and Where are you? “ I am doing wonderfully well and I am work-ing two days in the parish office. This is perfect for me! My new mission is to locate older parishioners who have left because they entered a retired home, nursing home, etc. I would like to locate them and find out if they need the sacraments or a visit. I would like them to know that this great community of St. Angela Merici is thinking and praying for them. Isn’t this a great mission – this is all Monsignor Mitas’s idea!! Hooray!

This is how you can help!! If you know where some parishioners are in nursing homes, retirement homes or at home, please share their names, ad-dresses and telephone numbers with me. I will reach out to them and maybe make a little difference in the lives because their parish loves them!!

    God is Good!!

The title, The Scarlet and the Black, is a referenced not only to the black cassock and scar-let sash worn by monsignors and bishops in the Roman Catholic Church, but also to the dominant colors of Nazi Party regalia.
