Designed with the needs and interests of the military person and his or her spouse in mind, the Military Career Transition Program (MCTP) is a graduate, off-campus, evening and weekend ini-tial teacher licensure program within the Depart-ment of Teaching and Learning at Old Dominion University. This distinctive program is specifi cally geared toward military, military spouses and se-lect service personnel. Upon completion of the master of science in education and additional state licensure requirements, participants are eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia. Li-censure grade levels include elementary educa-tion (PreK-6), middle school (6-8), and secondary (6-12); endorsements are available in the areas of math, sciences (earth science, biology, chemistry and physics), English, and social studies.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS• Graduates of this Virginia state-approved teacher preparation program earn a master of science in education (M.S.Ed) degree with a major in elementary or secondary education and initial Virginia teacher licensure.

• Teaching endorsements are available in the following areas: • Elementary education (PreK-6) • Middle school (6-8: English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science) • Secondary education (6-12: English, Social Studies/ History, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science)

• Courses are available off-campus at military bases, ODU higher education centers, and web-based (online and video stream).

TRX® may have found a niche market in the military because of their ability to work with space limitations.

“It is very popular with the military because it can be done in confined spaces. You don’t need more than a three foot by four foot area to do it,” said Litchfield. “They have a 12-week program called TRX® Force, which is designed for the military. It’s a whole workout program that involves cardio and tells you other ways to do cardio if you don’t have machines.”

The suspension training does require par-ticipants to do some core strengthening train-ing before using.

“You should be able to hold a 60 second plank,” said Litchfield. “That means for a start-ing level, you have a strong enough core to be able to use the suspension trainer successfully.”

The suspension training system is very ver-satile.

“It uses body weight and you only need the suspension trainer,” said Litchfield. “It fits in a suitcase, so you can take it anywhere with you. It works a lot of those little muscles that normally the bigger muscles would do the work for, so you are able to isolate the smaller muscles and be able to get those interconnect-ing muscles to do the work that they are not used to.”

This doesn’t mean that you can’t cheat yourself and do exercise incorrectly, even with the suspension system.

“The most common mistake is people don’t keep their core muscles engaged,” said Litch-field. “From the beginning of the workout to the end of the workout the body is in a plank position.”

Although the exercises may seem intimi-dating, it is urged for service members to give it a try.

“Somehow I’m always able to convince people to come out to my TRX® class. It can be intimidating,” said Louis Fenton, MWR fitness assistant for Naval Station Norfolk’s Q-80 gym. “At the end, they are always glad that they did it.”

For those that want to get involved in the classes, Litchfield’s TRX® clinics are sched-uled on Monday’s and Wednesday’s at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. at the N-24 gym.

“At N-24 gym for the month of July I am hosting clinics. The Circuit Training class will be in August,” explained Litch-field. “They will have to attend a clinic in order to attend the class in August. Once the classes start up, they will have to either make an appointment with me or they can come to me the first Friday of every month at 6 and 7 a.m. I will be offering additional clinics.”

The Circuit Training class is a 45-minute circuit training course.

“It is hard! There are very little rest periods in it,” said Litchfield. “There are four groups of exercises in it. We go upper body, lower body, core and then a minute of cardio and then one minute of rest … and then again upper, lower, core, cardio. It is different ex-ercises each time, so it is just boom, boom, boom for 45 minutes.”

TRX® Express classes are available at the building Q-80 gym on Mondays at 5 p.m. The class offers a half hour workout and does not require a clinic beforehand. For more infor-mation call 444-1300.

At the CEP-58 gym there is also space for a single TRX® for service members wishing to learn more about the program. To take ad-vantage, call Robin Hammond at 444-7826.
