JULY 1, 2018
Back In Front
Pictures taken of our church in its early days reveal the American flag flying high in the front yard on Amboy Road. But times change.
When Holy Child was newly erected, the main entrance was on Amboy Road. With the expansion and development of the church building under Monsignor Burke, the main entrance shifted to the other side facing the parking lot.
Upon my arrival and since, I never saw a flagpole on the grounds. However, in walking about I discovered a 28” x 28” cement footing with what seemed to be a broken off pipe in its center with weeds growing out of it. Affixed to that foundation was a weathered plaque that read:
In Memory Of
Denis Carlin
RIP
1939-1976
Coming upon such a ruin, one would wonder what had happened but I was unable to discover the answer to that question.
However, that very question was recently raised by visiting members of the Carlin family. Understandably, they wished to see their gift restored to the parish.
Procuring a new flagpole, we have installed it on the front side of the church as we now know it.
The American flag will once again grace our grounds as it did in yesteryear. We will behold it raised above the Fatima Plaza at the rectory entrance with a newly minted reproduction of the original plaque. We are grateful to the Carlin family for requesting the restoration.
“But should auld acquaintance be forgot Keep your eyes on the grand old flag.”
