MUSINGS BY MARK

The second Sunday in May is a day many people pause to remember or honor their mothers. With this in mind, I would like to share a scene I witnessed that would make any mother proud. A harried mother was herding five small children, with the youngest in her arms, through a busy mall. Just finishing a call on her cell phone, she directed the children to take the down escalator to the lower level of stores. The first three children filed obediently onto the moving escalator with no issue, but the fourth child froze in his tracks at the top. This four or five-year-old stared at the first few feet of the

descending steps for several seconds. Then, shaking his head slowly from left to right, he backed up under the legs of his mother, who quickly struggled to keep her balance as she clutched the baby and several pack-ages. The situation rapidly became desperate, with a crowd beginning to gather behind them. Fortunately, an alert older brother, looking up the moving stairs, bounded back up the steps two or three at a time.

It was his reaction to his younger brother that truly impressed me. When the elder brother reached him, he did not grab his sibling or pick him up, but instead, marching in place on the moving steps, he offered his hand to his baby brother. It was a beautiful sight to witness as the frightened younger brother, flashing an all-too-brief smile, took the hand of his older brother and stepped out in faith.

This obviously fatigued mother could take great pride in her young children, who displayed a spirit of love, trust, and self-discipline. Without even knowing this mother or her family, I am certain there are mo-ments when the strain of family life puts them to the test. But in this brief encounter, I witnessed among them a spirit that all of God’s children should have.

In 2 Timothy 1:7 we read these words of encouragement: “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and self-discipline.” These are qualities that all of God’s children should receive: gifts of the Spirit that would enable us to see our brothers and sisters in need everywhere; love and courage to respond; and self-discipline not to overpower others with arrogance and pride. It may often seem as if we are marching in place and making no progress with our brothers and sisters, but it is an outstretched hand, our faith in God’s Spirit to help discern what is true, and the trust we can mutually extend that will enable them – and us – to step forward in faith. It is the Holy Spirit that empowers acts of Christian witness and growth for all people living in community.

The older I become, the more I pray for wisdom and spiritual discernment. There are many steps for us to climb as children of God. May God make me loving, bold, and self-disciplined to know when to take a hand, and when to offer mine. Perhaps this is the best way to honor my mother and my Lord.

I believe we can truly make a difference in this community and world – especially when we remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit: seeing others not as powerless, fearful, and incompetent, but as our brothers and sisters, who – like us – desire a hand of Christian love, fellowship, and partnership.

SUMMER DAY CAMP/ VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

COMING TO CHERRY HILL IN JUNE

Cherry Hill Church is excited to announce that we will be hosting “Westminster on the Road” this sum-mer from Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28. Westminster on the Road (WOTR) is a week-long unique blend of Vacation Bible School and Summer Camp. It is a joint effort between Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake and the congregation.

WOTR is designed for children who have completed grades 1-6. Camp Westminster will provide pro-gramming (staff, art supplies, game equipment, cur-riculum resources, (miscellaneous stories and activ-ities) and promotion of the program to the communi-ty.

The day will start at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm. Each day will include activity sessions, Bible les-sons, arts and crafts, nature, ad-venture, music, and drama. Lunch

and two healthy snacks will be provided daily. Be-fore the conclusion of the day there will be a “camp fire check in” with favorite camp songs and a few more skits before closing the day with our Bible verse and theme.

The cost for the week is $75.00 per child. Finan-cial assistance is available if needed. We believe this will be a wonderful outreach to our own children and to children in the community. Registration forms are available in the church office. We are hoping to have 40 participants in this program.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Counselor Volunteers: Adults 18 and over have the opportunity to assist with the staff leaders. Duties in-clude keeping children on task, assisting in activities/crafts, etc. Older youth may help as assistants. There are 10 shifts available during the week and we need approximately 6 volunteers each shift. You may sign up for more than one shift.

Snack Volunteers: Will be responsible for bringing 2 snacks for their assigned day for all VBS participants, staff, and volunteers. Snacks should include 2 choices of food – preferably at least one fruit/vegetable. There are 10 slots available for snack during the week, and you may sign up for more than one if you would like.

Lunch Volunteers: Provide lunch for one day of the camp!

Sign up sheets will be in Weir Foyer beginning in May. Questions? Please contact Rev. Mark Phillips.

THE CHERRY HILL SINGS RETURNS IN JUNE! Friday, June 7 at 7:30 pm

The Cherry Hill Music Ministry is excited to announce the return of the Cherry Hill Sing on Friday, June 7 at 7:30 pm. While June seems a way off at this point, it’s not too early to start brainstorming your offering for this year’s Cherry Hill Sing!

But what is the Cherry Hill Sing? you may ask. It is an informal, church-wide music gath-ering: a time to share a special talent, enjoy the talents of others, and sing beloved songs together as a church family. Previous year’s gatherings featured the participation of children, youth and adults and included poetry reading, ukulele playing, ivory tickling, duets, solo singing, audience wide singing – you name it! Some might even remember the all-time hit “Goldie Locks and the Three Bears” as performed by the bell choir, Wen-dy Solgan, and the Wensorski family! Who knows what surprises are in store this year!

If you would enjoy a laid-back, fun opportunity to share song (sacred or secular), play an instrumental number, recite poetry, share your secret juggling talent (!), this is a splendid event for you! Simply place your name and talent on the sign up sheet in Weir Foyer , speak or email to Clayton Farmer at [email protected].

CHERRY HILL CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Clayton Farmer, Cherry Hill’s Director of Music, has started a new children’s choir for children in kindergarten through the fifth grade. The group has been meeting for the past several weeks after worship on Sunday mornings. They will make their “debut” during worship on Mother’s Day, May 12. All children are invited to be part of this new group. For more information, speak to Clayton on Sunday morning or email him at [email protected].

SUMMER DREAMS

For many years, Cherry Hill members have given support in many ways to The Second Mile Center of Detroit. During the month of May, we are collecting donations during coffee hour to support their “Summer Dreams” program.

This program provides impoverished children and youth in the most dangerous zip code in Detroit the opportunity to attend day camp in a safe, spiritually-

based atmosphere. Each week, Monday through Friday, they will be able to participate in Vacation Bible School, art, dance, recreation, water activities and crafts. They will receive a free lunch every day, too.

Look for the bright sand pails on the ta-bles in Memorial Parlor and help them attain their summer dreams. If you have any questions, please contact Sherry Brown, PW Moderator.

WHO’S GRADUATING?

Do you have a graduate that you would like to rec-ognize in the June Messenger? They can be grad-uating from high school, college, vocational school, cosmetology, etc. We would like to recognize them! Please notify Lisa in the office by phone or email at [email protected] by May 15th.

Our deepest sympathy goes to Bruce Chambers on the death of his wife, Donna on April 19th. She has been a member since 1970. Her memorial service is May 18th in the Chapel.

Our deepest sympathy also goes to Ray and Jane Scoboria on the death of their son, Alan, on April 19th. He is a former member. He was only 46.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) enables congregations and mission partners of the Presby-terian Church (U.S.A) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic event. The work of PDA is supported by the One Great Hour Special Offering.

The tornado outbreak of March 3, 2019, was a sig-nificant severe weather event that affected the Southeastern United States. Over the course of 6 hours, a total of 40 tornadoes touched down across portions of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.

Our Cherry Hill Mission Committee donated $300 for this relief effort.

Champions Aspiring to Make Pathways to Success - CHAMPS (formally the Transition to Inde-pendence Program TIP-Wayne State), is an evidence-informed, college access and retention pro-gram for youth ages 18-26 who have “aged out” of the child wel-fare system and/or juvenile justice system and are enrolled students at Wayne State University.

Their mission is to improve graduation rates of court-involved youth from southeast Michigan and ad-vance the educational well-being of youth who age out of foster care through the development and pro-vision of best practices in academic excellence, ap-plied learning, and evaluation that examines issues of strategic importance to the child welfare, K-12, and higher education service sectors.

Our Cherry Hill Mission Committee donated $500 towards book and supplies assistance for this wor-thy cause.

CONFIRMATION CLASS UPDATE

The members of this year’s Confirmation Class (Jacob Betley, Jordan Betley, Bret Levangie, Bren-na Thorpe, and Erin Wensorski) have been meeting for the past several weeks on Sunday mornings af-ter worship. The class is going well and they are working hard as they prepare to be receive into membership. This month, they will be writing their Statements of Faith which they will share with the session on Tuesday, May 21. You are asked to continue to keep this group of young people in your prayers. The class will be received into member-ship on Pentecost Sunday, June 9.

SUMMER BOOK STUDY

Members and friends of the congre-gation are invited to join the Monday afternoon study group in reading A.J. Jacobs book, The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally As Possible.

Jacobs chronicles 12 months living a remarkably strict Biblical life full of charity, chastity, and facial hair as impressive as anything found in The Lord of the Rings. Through it all, he manages to brilliantly keep things light, while avoiding the sinful eye of judgment.

Jacobs, a New York Jewish agnostic, decides to follow the laws and rules of the Bible, beginning with the Old Testament, for one year. (He actually adds some bonus days and makes it a 381-day year).

In an open-minded way he also visits with atheists, Evangelicals Concerned (a gay group), Jerry Fal-well, snake handlers, Red Letter Christians--those who adhere to the red letters in the Bible, those words spoken by Jesus Himself, and even takes a trip to Israel and meets Samaritans. Through it all, he keeps a healthy skepticism, but continues to pray and is open to the flowering of real faith.

In the end, he says, "I'm now a reverent agnostic. Which isn't an oxymoron, I swear. I now believe that whether or not there's a God, there is such a thing as sacredness. Life is sacred." Not a bad out-come.

Copies of the book are available for $5.00. A dis-cussion of the book will be held in late June or early July. For more information or for a copy of the book, please contact Rev. Mark Phillips.

Cherry Hill’s Mission Statement We are committed to discerning and doing God’s

will, through worship, study, and mission while

becoming a more open, supportive community of

members and neighbors. Welcoming everyone.

Including all.

Adopted by Session December 17, 2013

Our worship themes for the Sundays after Easter will focus on the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus leading up to his ascension into heaven.

Sunday, May 5 The Stranger - Luke 24: 13-31

Jesus appears to the two disciples on the road, but they are kept from recognizing Him until they sit at table with him and break bread.

Sunday, May 12 Going Where You Don’t Want to Go - John 21: 15-19

Jesus meets the disciples on the beach and comes face to face with Peter and asks him, “Do you love me? If so, feed my sheep.” However, feeding the sheep sometimes takes us in unexpected dir- ections.

Sunday, May 19 Believing is Seeing - John 20: 19-31 Two times after his resurrection, Jesus appears in the upper room where the disciples are hiding. Thomas is not present the first time and refuses to believe unless he sees the nail prints in Jesus’ hands.

Sunday, May 26 For Your Good … I am Leaving - John 14: 15-31 While this account does not take place after the resurrection, Jesus is preparing the disciples for his departure from this world … “a little while longer and you will not see me.”

Sunday, June 2 – Sunday After the Ascension Up, Up, and Away! - Acts 1: 1-14 Jesus appears for one last time with the disciples. While he is speaking, he ascends into heaven. The disciples are left looking up at the sky in amazement… that is … until they are told what to do next!

CEREAL FOR SUMMER CAMPAIGN

Summer should be a time of fun and laughter for children but, for those who rely on subsidized school meals, summer can be a time of anxiety when there is uncertainty about having enough to eat.

Cherry Hill is joining in the Presbytery of Detroit third annual “Cereal for Summer” campaign to help families provide enough food for their children. With 1 in 6 families in the metro Detroit area considered food insecure, this extra food is needed, especially in the summer months. The Hunger Ministries Pro-gram has received and distributed thousands of boxes of cereal thanks to the generosity of our churches.

Throughout the months of May and June, we will be collecting boxes of cereal. Ideally, we would like to receive cereal that contains whole grains, and is low in sugar and sodium. Half of what is collected will stay with Helping Hands Food Pantry and the other half will be given to the Hunger Ministries Program. These programs include food pantries and meal programs in churches, the Second Mile Center, and a couple of elementary schools in Detroit. Please help to feed hungry children!

NEW ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS BEGINS MAY 5

Starting on May 5th, John Whitfield will be offering a new adult Sunday School class: an Introduction to the New Testament. We will look at the process that led to the formation of the Gospels and the let-ters that make up most of the rest of the 27 docu-ments of the New Testament.

Did you know, for example, that Paul's letters were written before any of the Gospels? They are the earliest witness to the life, ministry and meaning of Jesus Christ. Did you know that scholars think Luke and Matthew shared a source for the sayings of Je-sus that Mark did not have, that is now lost?

Come join us in Chapel Parlor to learn about these and other fascinating things about the New Testa-ment. We will meet from 12:00pm to 12:45pm. Grab a snack and beverage during coffee hour after worship then come join us. You'll be glad you did.
