Double shows, now there’s a discussion subject. In NYC all the jazz clubs do doubleshows every night of the week, which means they turn the house. We only do this at weekends, preferring a more leisurely approach to the mid week and to allowtime for the support slots. Whilst we run separate Late Late showsat 11 pm each week night we do let the existing customers stay onif they want to so there’s no clearing the room. However in ourongoing ambition to attract all the major jazz stars to the club, especially the ones we can’t really afford, we sometimes have tochange things, so when the opportunity comes along to have sayCassandra Wilson or say Wynton Marsalis performing, as we havein July, we have to do what it takes to make it work. And that meansdoubles all round.

What we do have planned for all of you who can’t get into theWynton shows (22 to 24 July) is a webcast. We will be utilising ourhigh spec cameras and in- house edit suite (facility all available forhire by the way) to send one of the shows live and direct off aroundthe world via Ronniescotts.co.uk. Check the website and the mailouts for details of which exact show we will broadcast. We are ratherexcited about the plan, which will be a first for the club.

July and August are choc full of talent, from the amazing Brazilianbig band SpokFrevo, and the drummer Chris Dave with his 6 snaredrums, to vocalese legend Jon Hendricks, Jazz ingénues GoGoPenguin and the scary genius that is Ginger Baker. It is one of themost varied line ups we have put together for some time. Highlight? It’s a toss up between Jon Hendricks’ sailor’s hat and HermetoPascoal’s sewing machine.

“Chris Dave is probably the most dangerous drummer alive. He istotally reinventing just what you can do with drums.” - ?uestlove

One of the most revered and in demand musicians of hisgeneration, Chris Dave’s eccentric approach to the drum set andhis ability to adapt to any musical setting, whether jazz, hip-hop orR&B, has put him in a category of his own. He first came to the jazzaudiences attention as part of Robert Glasper’s trio and it hisformidable ability to draw on jazz, funk, hip-hop and even gospelmusic that makes him such an extra-ordinary drummer and hasseen him perform with a who’s who of modern music fromD’Angelo and Lupe Fiasco to Wynton Marsalis and Beyonce.

JONHENDRICKS

Ronnie Scott’s has the pleasure in welcoming the genius in vocalese andimprovisation and true innovator for this spectacular four night residency -Mr Jon Hendricks. Offering a very different take on the art of jazz singing,Hendricks is credited with the invention of vocalese, a technique wherein thesinger puts words to the instrumental lines of already existing songs thatoften results in a hugely impressive display of vocal control and dexterity.

Also regarded as one of the finest scat singers in jazz history, Hendrickscomposed the lyrics for Georgie Fame’s smash hit Yeh Yeh lyricalarrangements for the album Vocalese by jazz vocal group ManhattanTransfer, which went on to win 7 Grammy Awards, including one forhimself as ‘Best Singer’. Perhaps more important however, is the factthat he is still regarded, at the age of 91, as one of the finest, mostinfluential and most innovate singers ever in jazz, or indeed any othertype of music - his appearance at Ronnie Scott’s is an unmissableopportunity to witness a master in action
