HistoryofJudoJudo, meaning gentle way, is a contemporarymartial art founded in 1882 by Professor JigoroKano.Asaboy,Kanowasanundersized, slender, weak, and sickly child with one sickness after another.Against his doctor's advice, Kano decided to dosomething to improvehishealthandat thesametimelearnhowtodefendhimselfagainstbullies. It was during these times that Kano began acomprehensive and systematic study of variousforms of Jiu Jitsu. Around 1880 Kano startedrethinkingandmodifyingtheJiuJitsutechniqueshehadlearned.Hesawthatbyremoving the strength-based techniques and focusing on leverage, timing andpositioning, a smaller person could overcome a bigger, stronger opponent. AsKano combined the best techniques of various schools into one system hecreatedaphysical educationprogram thatembodiedbothmental andphysicalskill. In addition, he believed that the techniques could be practiced as acompetitivesportifthemoredangeroustechniqueswereomitted.In1882hemodifiedmanyof the traditional throwsandremoved the footandhandstrikesandintroduced‘KanoJiuJitsu’,otherwiseknownas‘KodokanJudo’,totheworld.TherearethreecoreprinciplestoJudo:Mutual welfare, mutual benefit. Judo is for everyone. The most importantperson on themat is your training partner. Thereforewe should practice in awaywhereweareallgrowingasJudoka.Maximum efficiency, minimum effort. Essentially, this means: “Techniqueovercomespower.”Beingabletothrowabiggerpersonthroughthecorrectuseofleverage,timingandpositioningiswhatweallaimtoachieve.Adaptability. Both in Judo and in lifewe need to be able to adapt towhat isthrownatus.ThisisanessentialpartofJudotraining,randoriandshiai..
