Some of us are affected more directly and intensely than others. It seems that the ‘Fields of Gold’ we once had have been taken away from our grasp. It is easy to get bogged down by the ‘loss’ we are suffering. We need to remember that everything is a gift – even this challenging time we are facing. It is not God punishing us, but His way of asking us to open our hands, to let go of something we are grasping tightly, so that we can receive something better. There’s a book in the Old Testament section of the Bible called ‘Ruth’. It’s a love story. It’s been described as the most beautiful short story in the world. It has all the ingredients of a good read, - anxiety, fear, love, and a commitment that inflames the imagination and soothes the soul. It begins with despair and ends with delight. Much more than a good read - it’s a travel guide through tough times. It reminds us that tough times don’t last but tough people do. The first chapter of Ruth could have been titled ‘Fields of Gold.’ It begins with death, despair and famine but ends with hope, which, in this case, is the beginning of the barley harvest, literally, fields of gold. The Barley Harvest was in the beginning of spring, and traditionally began immediately after the Passover, and this was the beginning of the season of ‘First Fruits.’ I n Israel, the First Fruits of a crop were a reason for thanksgiving. In the New Testament, this has its fulfillment in the Lord Jesus Christ,1st Corinthians chapter 15 verse 20 says, ‘But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the ‘First Fruits’ of those who are asleep. Just another reminder that fees have been recently issued to families and if you have not received your fees statement, please contact the office ASAP. Please note that direct debit families would not have received a statement, but if they would like an update, please contact Maria on [email protected]. Fees are due on Friday 25th May. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, B-pay or eftpos here in the admin office. I sincerely thank those families who pay their fees promptly and on time. I wish to also thank those families who struggle at times to meet their commitments on time, but display the character and integrity to make contact with the office to try to find a way forward, instead of paying nothing and saying nothing (which helps nobody!).

An Important Question By Byron Pulsifer
Throughout the years, there are many important questions that you need to ask. Some of these questions revolve around what educational needs you foresee to launch a successful career; where are you going to live; who are you going to marry; do you want children; what type of house do you want that would satisfy your needs and desires; what plans should you make for financial security before you reach retirement. All of these questions are important at different stages of your life but no matter when the question is asked, a clear and decisive answer is required.
I never thought much about any of these questions as a young man. But, this all changed one eventful day during a shift I worked as a student nurse in a geriatric ward. You see, as part of my responsibilities, I had a ward of several elderly men who where all unique in their own way, and some of these gentleman took a lot more care than others, and some were a lot grumpier than others. A lot of nurses, quite frankly, did not enjoy working with these men and would try to avoid spending any more time there then they had to.
On the contrary, I took the opposite tack attending to the needs of these men. Instead of just doing what I had to do to make them comfortable, giving them necessary treatments, blood pressure and temperature readings, baths, and supplying medication as ordered, I would finish all the required responsibilities and then stay in the ward. I spent a lot of time talking, joking, just good old give them attention beyond what they needed time. After all, these men could not walk or get around, they had few visitors, and were generally left to spend their days just watching TV, sleeping, or complaining to anyone who stepped foot into the ward.
So, I became the main target of their pent up mental energy and honestly, I had a lot of fun. But, beyond establishing a great rapport with these men, there was one gentleman I spent a lot of time talking with. He wasn't at first appearance much different than the rest but he had a wicked sense of humor and a grand spirit about him. One day, after all necessary nursing tasks were done and I stayed with them, he called me over to his bedside. At first thinking he was about to unleash a tirade of quips and fancies, I was ready. Instead, he beckoned me even close so he could obviously speak very quietly to me out of earshot of the other man.
In a soft voice just above a whisper, he asked, "What do you want to be remembered for after you die?" I was somewhat taken back thinking immediately that he was in physical distress and required emergency medical attention. I quickly asked, "What's wrong - what are you feeling - are you having a problem breathing?"
"No, no, no, nothing like that", he whispered. "I want you to think about just what I said. What do you want to be remembered for after you die? "I don't understand what you are asking me". I said confused.
"It really is a simple question but an important question. How do you want people to think of you when you die? Do you want to be known for your humor, for your caring, for helping people no matter who they are, or do you want to be remembered as a person of status, wealth, spending big money on a house, fancy car, long vacations or possessing the latest doodads?
Over the years, we may all face this important question. It may be a question that comes to you because of a tragic circumstance, or it may come to you after you have observed or witnessed other people stepping up to many needed issues and taking on great odds to change societal obligations. It may be a question you ask in later years when you finally realize that you won't live forever. Or, it may also be a question that you may never want to ask yourself because you are too caught up in enjoying the materialistic side of life. Is it time for you to ask, "What do you want to be remembered for after you die?"

Recently some of our Year 7 boys entered a Gold Coast Council competition promoting awareness about the
danger of playing near/in drains. The “Mates4Life” competition was open to all Gold Coast schools .
Our boys won first prize!!!... The winners are - Notably - Jayden Sheather, Declan Hargreaves, Taj Pearce,
James Halloran, Paris Philips and proudly supported by Mr Parry's musical talents/all his spare time and Ms
Lynes.
The boys created a great lyrical rap with a 'phat' sound, educating Kids on the dangers of playing in or near
drains.
Congratulations Year 7 lads, this was largely independent work and its very cool.

G’day everyone! Welcome to Term 2, Week 4 ! It may be a ‘short’ week this week, following the long weekend,
but it will still be a busy one, leading into a very special week-end for all of our mums, grandmothers and special
ladies. Once again some of our P&F parents will be running a Mother’s Day stall this coming Thursday and Friday.
P&F Family Barbecue: This event last Friday was a great night for all who attended. The Admin Team cooked up a
storm and the P&F volunteers provided service with a smile. Mr Parry, Mr Yates & Mr Meiklejohn provided great
music and our families and students provided great company. Congratulations to our P&F team and all who
contributed on yet another successful Jubilee event.
P&F B-Annual Dinner: On a slightly more formal note, our Jubilee Bi-Annual Dinner is now less than two weeks away,
on Saturday 19 May. The RSVP date was last Friday 4 May, but I’m sure it’s not too late for anyone interested to obtain
an additional invitation and complete an RSVP slip at the school office,.
NAPLAN 2012: This week our Yrs 3, 5 & 7 students finalise their preparations for this year’s NAPLAN (National
Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy) Tests, which will take place next Tuesday 15 May (Language
Conventions) Wednesday 16 May (Reading) and Thursday 17 May (Numeracy), with Friday 18 May as a catch-up day
for missed tests. Parents seeking withdrawals or adjustments for students are reminded that the forms MUST be
completed and returned by this Thursday 10th May for finalisation on Friday. We wish our teachers and students well in
their preparations and for the tests to come.
Parent-teacher Conferences, Semester 1, 2012: Just a quick reminder that there will not be one specified week in
which all interviews will take place this semester. Instead, the teachers on each year level will decide on the most
appropriate timing for their year level interviews to take place. They will notify the families of these dates in advance
via a parent letter. This letter will include an explanation of the process and an open timetable of 15 minute timeslots
indicating teacher availability, which parents are to use to nominate times that would suit them for these
conferences. Our Yr 6 teachers have already set this process in motion and will hold their Parent-Teacher Conferences
next week (Wk 5.)
Special School Focus: This week we continue our focus on correct school uniform, in particular correct shoes.
The correct shoes for our Formal Dress Uniform are black leather dress shoes, with white Jubilee socks. For our
Sports Uniform, they should be predominantly white sports shoes (joggers) with non-marking soles. The white
sports shoes, which are worn with white Jubilee sports socks, must have white laces and minimal other colour .

But for sport our shoes must be mostly white!
Mobile Devices in Prep and Year 1: In Term 1 the P and F granted the funding for 6 iPads to be purchased for each Prep and Year 1 class. We are happy to announce that these devices are now in the classes and the teachers developing their own skills to best use these devices with the children. The teachers and staff are extremely grateful for the P and F’s generosity. As well as the iPads, they also funded iPod touches for each Year 2 and Year 3 class. They will hopefully arrive and be ready to use in the next few weeks. As well as the funding for the iPads and iPods, the P and F also funded the purchasing of document cameras for every Prep to Year 3 class which have already arrived and been issued to the classrooms.

JUBILEE AND WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN 2012
Help Jubilee to acquire valuable learning resources:
It’s simple to participate: from the 9th May– 1st July, when you shop at Woolworths collect the
stickers from the checkout operator and place them on sticker cards that were sent home last
week. There’ll be 1 sticker for every $10 spent. Once completed, place the completed sticker
cards in the collection box located at the school office.

As of this week each Year Level will have their very own AWL Year Seven Crew member.

These students will be working with these classes throughout the year. They will be teaching their classes about the AWL and what it does, encouraging students to bring in good quality animal food and other donations for the AWL.
They will be running competitions, maybe doing fun things like face painting with you and other interesting activities.
Watch out for your team member visiting your class soon. Remember to keep bringing in animal food and placing it in the AWL black bin outside the office. Put your name and class onto a raffle ticket into the raffle ticket box near the bin and once a month we will draw a lucky winner for a $2 tuckshop voucher.
Remember if you can try and visit the AWL and to donate good quality food in the bin outside the office.

HPE/Sports News The Artistic Roller Skating State Championships were held at Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre from 5 - 7 May 2012. Congratulations to Amy, Chloe and older sister (and past student) Jessica Browne for their achievements at the 2012 Artistic Roller Skating State Championships. Amy won Juvenile Figures and Juvenile Free skating and is the State Champion. She also competed in the Open Short Program Free skating and came second. Chloe came fifth in Juvenile Figures and 2nd in Juvenile Freeskating and is the runner up State Champion. The girls will now be representing Queensland at the National Artistic Roller Skating Championships in Sydney in July 2012. Jess Browne also represented Australia and competed at the Oceania Artistic Roller Skating Championships in New Zealand in April 2012. She came fourth in Cadet Freeskating. Total Football Academy will be running an after School soccer program in Term 2 at Jubilee Primary School. Registration forms will be distributed during a free demonstration (below & on the following page in this weeks newsletter). During the 6 week program games will be played inside an inflatable soccer field, which captures the imagination of students, giving them a great soccer experience. Training will take place inside a skills square focusing on different skills each week, such as dribbling, turning and shooting. Start date: Thursday 17th of May, Prep - Year 4, 3.15pm - 4.15pm. Wow we finally did it... And what an amazing night was had by all... I think the kid’s faces showed what a
great night it was so thank you to every family who came along and shared the night with us. We had too many
volunteers to mention everyone by name, but thank you for all you do at these events. A special mention to our Chef
Extraordinaire’s, Dave Sewell, Brian Mason and Michael Ball plus our thanks to the teachers who came along to help
as well. These events would never be as successful without the masterful Mr Shane Parry, thank you for spending

Also we will have for sale Mother’s Day Cards for $1.00 so make sure you add an extra $1 in the bag for the kids to buy you a special card. If there are any leftovers, they will be available for sale from 1.30pm until after assembly on Friday 11th, so mums and dads if you need anything for Grandma this is when you’ll be able to purchase from the stall. Also the Friday gives those children who want to purchase more than the maximum of 2 gifts will be able to do so. On the day please send with your child a BROWN PAPER BAG with their money and include their name and class; this is so we can return the gifts home safely.
