SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2.

Holidays.Public holidays, like Sundays, are supposed to

tie made for the people. The. 2 is nothing thattends so much to arouse and foster a spirit ofnationality and a love of country in the people,as the proper and intelligent observance of holi-

days set apart to commemorate some important"event in the national history. As an instance inpoint, observe the immense influence produced j

upon the American character by the universaland enthusiastic observance of their principalholiday. There are those who assert, and with I

r u r r..i r--it :- - ! u t... - Ij eveneration for Republican institutions would cor-

respondingly decrease. The grand idea of selfgovernment thus perpetuated is the underlyingcanse, and & recognized alike in the squibs ofthe school-bo- y, the roar of cannon, and the some-

times bombastic utterances of the orator thatprovoke our smiles. An occasional holiday istineful too, serving as a breathing spell, a relaxa-tion of the constantly bent bow of labor, whenboth the employer and the employee can meet on

the equal plane of a common enjoyment. Inthin particular, holidays have a tendency to pro-

duce the healthy sentiment of a common human-

ity a sentiment that too often requires to bestimulated in these days.

National holidays in Hawaii nei appear to havearrived at a condition of tameness that entitlesthan to bo called non-descri- pt. Last Tuesday, for instance, was neither a Sunday, a fast day,nor apparently, a holiday, as such days are ob-

served in other countries. Lias government no

duty to perform in this matter, beyond simplyclosing public offices and firing a salute? Asidefrom the anniversary of His Majesty's birthday, the 2Sth of November is the only strictly nationalholiday that we have, and the native race, pro-

verbially fond of public shows and celebrations,is reduced to adopt the gala days of foreigners.Formerly, the 31st of July, the anniversary of therestoration of the flag of the country, was a greatday of festivity and rejoicing throughout theIslands, and we were wont to have public ora-

tions, where thousands listened to the rehearsalof the history of the past and were urged torenewed hope and exertion for the future of thenation ; there were grand processions, --withbadges and waving banners, a grand mesa dinner, and the day wound up with a display of fire-

works, and possibly a ball.- - But the observanceof that day, has, unwisely we think, been drop-

ped, because, it is said, that the historical recol-

lections it evoked were unpleasant to some of theKing's foreign-bor- n subjects. And so, for thatreason, the memory of ' Kamebameha the h;

Good," as Kauikeaouli was rightly namedwhich was inseparably connected with the ob-

servance of this day, as well as that of the noblechiefs now passed away who surrounded him onthose public occasions, must be suffered to sinkinto oblivion. y

Something undoubtedly might be made of theday which has just passed off " so lamely andunfashionably," were any pains taken by govern-ment to instruct the people as to the real mean-ing of the celebration ; the history of the missionof Richards and Ilaalilio to Europe and America, and what came of it ; and the central idea of aNational Independence. If, indeed, our -- rulersdeem the understanding of the people of anyimportance in that direction.

"We publish on the fourth page of to-da- pa-

per, a sermon preached by the Rev. Mr. William-son, of the Aogliean Church in this city, on the is

lesson of the life and death of the Bishop of Me-

lanesia, on account of whose murder we printedin our last. This painful occurrence must pro-duce a profound impression wherever it becomesknown, and England particularly will be aroused, and demand a prompt and vigorous exertion of tothe Government to put down forever the infamous AtraSc in human beings which has been the im-mediate cause of this calamity. The press has j

often heretofore urged the necessity of putting astop to this nefarious traffic, in the interests ofJin mftn it-- Knfc nnur t,o r . Jj - , vftuw vt uinrijrnm iu ley-- hissionaries senJs forth a voice that cannot be

We are glad to eee that our supplement of lastweek Lad the effect that it was designed to have, viz., to call public attention in a forcible mannerto the need that exista for eome energetic fore-

arming of ourselves against a possible calamity

such as sraa portrayed in the " 0'reat Fire in

Honolulu."It seems to ne, that in eneumerating the ad-

vantages arising from the establishment of a city.Government for Honolulu, the control of certain

nuisances, and abating of eome evil now existing, might be made feasible. We know that effort

have been, and are being made to take proper

care of property, but what we most need is a

council, that, meeting every month eay, can take

immediate notice of complaints, and frame laws

and orders to correct abuses. The total abolish-

ing of the building of grass huts within certain

limits should be insisted upon, and some provision

made for the removal of those now standing in

our midst. '

Th TVrd nf Health have done what they

could, we presume, to mitigate evils already ex-

isting and to provide for possible contingencies in

a sanitary point of view. At the same time,

there are many little things of which propertyId come

owners have cause to cumpun

within the province of a city council, but which

do not properly belong to the health officer's de-

portment. The officers to whom complaints are

now made, have their own peculiar duties to per-

form, and we can hardly ask them to take cog-

nizance of the little annoyances of every day life.

Our newspapers are open to correspondents onbut the fact isthese as well as other subjects;

that notes addrestsed to the public through Mr.

Editor, though they may call public attention to

the exibtence of an evil, at the same time afford

cleaned out, and useless articles removed. Then,:

when called upon, our Fire Department can givefull scope to their powers and show that theirclaims to thorough organization and efficiency areas we believe them to be, well founded.

It is the part of ordinary prudence to discreditthe gossip of common rumor, unless one knowsprecisely on what it is founded -- and then in-

deed it ceases to be rumor and becomes fact.Somehow this community is so constituted, itselements are bo leaky, that the air is frequentlyfilled with rumors, of one sort or another, and I

the journalist, while he listens to all, ventures tocredit few or none for the purposes of his pro-

fession. During the past ten days however, therehas been afloat a rumor of coming changes ingovernment that, first covertly and 6ccretly whis-

pered by a few, has gone on increasing in toneand volume until now it is openly talked of at ;

the street corners. The clianges that MadamRumor now insists upon as being on the tapis, extend to the composition of the Bench of theSupreme Court. But even the hint of a possiblechange in the highest tribunal of the countrythat sacred aegis of the rights of every man, wo-

man and child invests rumor with an importancethat cannot but arouse public solicitude. Nor isthis natural feeling of solicitude 'at all allayedwhen reflection brings to mind the vaulting andunscrupulous ambition of some now in power.

Madame Rumor bath it, that the office of HisHawaiian Majesty's Minister Resident at Wash- -ington, is to be created ; and that the appoint- -

,nfcrt to fill this post will be followed by achange in the office of the Minister of ForeignRelations. We would suggest that, in view ofthese rumored changes, the Government embracethe opportunity thus afforded, of recognizing theimportance and high standing of the Germanelement in this Kingdom.

.In any event, so far as the Cabinet itnelf isconcerned, a change for the worse is not among.the probabilities, but we can well perceive thatthe rumored shuffling of the cards would affordan opportunity for "vaulting ambition " torealize its life-drea-m ; yet caution suggests thatit may o'er leap itself."

A. Home Picture.Mr. Julius A. Palmer jr., continues bis " Hawaiian

Experiences " in the Boston Commercial Bulletin. In the number for October 14, we find a vivid de-

scription of what the writer saw in the LegislativeHalts of Hawaii nei, which, although decidedly col-

ored, is sufficiently to the life to provoke a heartylaugh, and with that view we reproduce it here.

At the time we resided at Honolulu, the Reci-procity treaty was agitating the local parliament. These putres conttcripti are chosen from all colorsand languages; there is every grade, from the full-blood- ed

Caucasian to the swarthy native. ' Howllien.'" asks an incipient politician, how do theydebate?" "How proceed according to Cushing'sManual ? " These questions are answered in thename of one man.

Bill Ragstulk.""And who might that individual be," do you fur-ther ask?

Bill Ragfldale is the parliament, the king, thepeople. Bill ' Uagsdale is the power behind thethrone. In fact,! could not see bow the SandwichIslands could be run at all without Bill Ragsdale.

ilr. Ragsdale would require the grand total ofthe eight columns before you to do him full justice. We can only allow ourselves to touch" upon a fewof the incidents told of this wonderful character. As the pen is mightier than the sword, so thetongue, which no man can tame, is mightier thanthe pen. This is the secret of Mr. Ragsdale7s posi-tion. On an elevated platform, facing the noblesand the lower house, stands a young, half-cast- e

gentleman, apparently about thirty years of age.As fast as a European makes a speech, it is ren-dered without the least hesitation into Hawaiian, and vice versa. I make bold to say that the world

never known a more fluent interpreter. Thekingdom of Hawaii recognises the fact, and noroyal scion indulges in freaks of fancy with moreimpunity than Bill Ragsdale. His character i notabove reproach ; what matter? Parliament cannotit without him. He has been in the prison and the

coain-ga- n more tban once. Tne Halls of Statehave then attempted to legislate with other aid,but it was no use ; debates flagged, memberssnored, interpreters asked speakers to repeat theirphraseology, and the Hawaiian chariot wheelsdragged as heavily as did those of Fbaraob in an-cient days. At last a bold member would move afree pardon to Bill Ragsdale ; carried ; the kingsigns it at once, and a messenger is despatched tothe chain-gan- g. II r. Ragsdale is never disturbedby anything ; he greets the messenger with perfectself possession, and with the air of the physiciancalled at last extremity in an important case. Heexchanges his prison dress for a coat of white cassi--niore, (he is a very Beau Brnmmel in toilet) anden uts me noiine. in a rusu all is changed ; biselectrical influence has put life into the assembly ;gifted with a wonderlul natural eloquence, heglows with enthusiasm in the debate, and either inEnglish or Hawaiian inspires every listener. An Incidentxr Edito : I know nothing of the management

and discipline of the Queen's Hospital. It appear, and noble institution, and a credit to

to be a worthythe community. A little occurrence, however warf

noticed on the street the other morning, which gave

an nnoleasant impression, to say the least. t A hand

cart, containing a plain red coffin, came trundling

down from the hospital to the Kawaiahao Church-

yard, gaily escorted by a number of Hawaiian " frail

sisters," of whom there seem to be quite a numberof the " act toat the hospital, under the provisions

mitigate." The street echoed, as they went onward, io

the light laughter so sadly familiar in other well

known quarters of town, and yet more did it echo,

when in a few minutes the same unhallowed convey-

ance rolled merrily back, laden with one half of the

heartless troupe, the other half acting as trundlers to

the trundled, while the man with the oo, who hadserved as an extempore sexton, strode mightily along,

using his implement as a stylish walking stick. Per-

haps it was all right. It might have been expected

from the poor lodging places to the east of Kaumaka-pi-li

Church. I have ouly described it as it appeared.

The Lixe via Fiji. In the Southern Cross, ofAuckland, Oct 8th, we find the following :

" Mr. Hall has decided to withdraw his Californianservice pending the decision of the Inter-coloni- al

Conference at Melbourne." Such is the latest intel-ligence respecting the Fijian traus-Pacif- ic service, as

occur was anticipated Dy all who permitted them--selves to look dispassionately at the subject." Thelukewarmness witn wmcn s r. uau s proposals werereceived by the various Australian Governmentsarose from the general conviction that the effortbeing made was too much of the nature of a venture, not having within itself the elements that ensuresuccess. That effort was sustained with great spiritin untoward ' circumstances ; and Mr. Hall, nothaving received . that encouragement which he hadexpected, and on which his venture depended, hasprudently retired from the unequal contest. It isneedless to say that this is the close of the effort, thewithdrawal of the service "pending the decision ofthe Inter-coloni- al Conference at Melbourne " beingintelligible. This result is not to be regretted. Anyprolongation of the struggle must only have deferredthe settlement of a question that has been too longpending ; and now that the people of New SouthWales, and of Australia generally, can have theirminds undiverted from a trans-racif- io mail serviceoapable of answering every requirement in the mostsatisfactory manner, we trust that the overtures sorecently made by the Government of New Zealandwill meet with a satisfactory response.

A New Journal. By reference to our advertisingcolumns, it will be seen that a new monthly literaryjournal will make its appearance in Honolulu on the1st of January. There is undoubtedly an abundanceof the right sort of talent here to make such an en-

terprise successful and a credit to the islands. ThePunchbowl, of which the Hawaiian will in somesort be the successor, was an able and spicy sheet, and we regretted its discontinuance.

Not Drowned, kob Devophed. The boy who wasthe subject of an item last week, as having, jumpedoverboard from the steamer JVtvada, and supposedto have been eaten by the sharks, we are now in-

exhibition of himself. , .Whereupon hie was providedwith a set of cross-belt- s, and the stolen clothes fixed

upon - his - back,- - knapsack '' fashion, and thus hemarched through the street aa light fingered infantry.

It is now suggested in Eastern cities that hugefire walls" be erected to arrest the progress of

fires. A city might be laid out in sections', bounded

by these lines iff such a manner, it would seem, as to

prevent "the spread of fire from one section t--j another. These walls would necessarily be massive and high, and might be made to run at the rear of stores andthrough the middle .of blocks. A writer in the Bos-

that decision as to the legality of the charge made,

Romans, T:8 While we were yet sinners, Christ died torus.n

Before any of you, my yotmg friends, for whom

nty words this morning axe specially intended, De-fo- re

one of you was Lorn, yoongjovinz a quiet country cursey in England, heard thattha nZble project of carrying the words of Scripturewhich I baTe just read; to the 200 islands, more orless lying between New Zealand and New Guinea, was originated. His thoughts were constantly turnedto those Lslands of the Pacific, and the accounts,

which from time to time reached Eng'aud, of mis-

sionary expeditions undertaken by Bishop Selwyn, very much impressed his mind. , After a little while

John Coleridge Patteson. (for that was the youngclergyman's name,) left his civilized Devonshire hemeto spend the remainder of his life ia telling the sav-

age nations of Melanesia that Christ died for them. They were a strange looking, and fierce minded peo-

ple these island children of the Southern Hemisphere, wild naked, armed with spears and clubs, or bows andpoisoned arrows. Every man's hand was against bisfellow, and scenes of violence and bloodshed-wer- e offrequent occurrence. The loe which prompted thisclergyman to leave the comforts of a wealthy home" to scatter seeds of life on barbarous shores ' wasconstrained by the melting tale of redeeming, love.

He was in the first rank of intellect, well up in theclassics, and mataematics. and natural sciences ; butbetter than all this, he had learned to sit as a littlechild at the feet of Jesus ; and when the finger ofGod pointed to the barbarous lands of the sea, andthe voice of Jesus said. "I died to save those cruelminded chUdren of evil ; who will go and soften theirfrozen hearts with the warm message of my loverPatteson exclaimed, "here am I, Lord send me.And he went. For five years this noble heartedclergyman worked under the Bishop of New Zealand. In the year 1861 he was consecrated Bishop of Ale--lanesia, and uoa permuteu mui vv 3pacity for ten years, and then called him away. X

nT .ii irmi r,f hia death, and a very sad story it istoo, by and by. I must first tell you someming oitt.A ffrwwl Rishon's work. -- Bude and uncouth as thesavages were, among these people the Bishops walkedunhurt. Once he was shot at, and aad to narratesome of bis faithfulcrew yielded up their lives onthat occasion. It was just such a place as tke Bishopoften called St cruising among his islands that thisattempt on his

.life was. made. An

tioa from the water s eage to me very top ot memountains. : A narrow strip of white coral 'strand.marking ont the place where a landing might be ef-

fected. On this spot a number of men might be seencollecting together, all ready for battle, with , theshield and the club, the spear and the bow : carryingbis life in his hands, Bishop Patteson would swimashore to these people, armed,' but not with carnalweapons, having the sword of the spirit, the shieldof faith, the helmet of salvation, the breastplate ofrighteousness, and his feet shod with the preparationof the Gospel of peace," carrying the message of salvation to the dark minded inhabitants oi tue aooaesof cruelty.. Reaching the shore, the savages wouldcrowd around : stooping down, the fearless man described a circle' on the ground, and with signs conveyed his desire that no food should cross toe line hehad described. The natives would then sit down up-

on their weapons, and watch the Bishop's movements.Impelled by curiosity, the children of the party wouldcreep through the ranks to gaze upon the stranger. This was the opportunity for displaying the peculiartact and iron nerve tor wnicn liisiiop ratteson wasespecially famed.: Some of those children, theltisbop wished to taKe witn mm ; nut wuat morelikely than a sudden onset upon him with the deadlyweapons, at the first intimation of such a desire. Theattempt must be made. With rapid discernment, se-

lecting the most intelligent looking child, the Bishopbeckons him to his side. Seldom did he fail in at-

tracting, with the powerful magnetism of his Iovea- -ble lace, the wild island child, and then no would re-

turn to the edge of the shore, beckoning the child tofollow, tiding no force, but the powerful art of persuasion, collecting one nere, ana one mere, mechildren were eventually taken to Norfolk Island, where there was a training school for the dusky sonsof the Pacific, which taught them the arts of civili-zation, and the principles of Christianity. : Bid timepermit I could tell you many things indicative of theblessing God has poured down upon that school ; forengaged in its good work, I have a very dear friend, whose letters, which I am privileged to read, speakof happy incidents., I must find time for one or twoextracts from my last letter speaking of the baptismof ten Melanesian boys, and one girL' He writes theevent to me was full of interest ; for nearly all thereligious instruction they have bad, has come fromme. They are young boys, the eldest is not morethan'fifteen. 'Tbey have never bad the blessing ofbeing taught Christianity on their mother's knee, butthey show mash proficiency in what is required ofthose who come to be baptized. , The ceremony wasperformed In the evening. The Font was beautifullyand tastefully decorated. The candidates In white;looking very neat and devout, assembled in an orderly semiairle around the font ; the sponsors taking uptheir places in a large semicircle in the rear of. thecandidates. The Bishop stood on the opposite sideof the font, facing the congregation, I occupied a po-

sition behind the Bishop, it being my duty to namethe child as each of the canditates was called out toreceive the holy rite. ' For the girl we close the nineof Bertha ; she is the first . fruits of what we praymay be a plentiful and rich, , harvest, at no very dis, tant time, to be gathered in to the praise and gloryof God from the island of Mahags in - the SolomonGroup. ir With the boys names were a difficulty allthe common ones: being already used. The Bishopcalled one by the name of this College, 4 Mertou Icalled one after the name of my old school Probiis :

and eventually we secured names for them all. , Eachcandidate severally made answers to the proposedquestions,- - and the firmness and decision with whichthey were given were worthy of people of much bet-

ter instruction. The devout and solemn. way inwhich these island children went through the wholeceremony was most touching, and' very pleasing towitness.: Arid now I must introduce to yov a newscene, the marriage of three couples, i The bridesand bridegrooms look, very festive, arrayed in cos-

tumes suitable to the occasion ; print dresses taste-fully made, and a wreath of flowers around the beadcomplete the adornments of Melanesian brides. Some-

times a ntat and well arranged boquet makes apleasing addition to the features ef the arrangements.'The ceremony ia more than, usually impressive, forto see Melanesians clothed and in their right mindswearing before the altar of God to be' faithful to-

gether till death as do part, is a sight to make allChristians glad." i "

I have spoken of the way in which the Bishop ob-

tained his scholars ; but it would be the work of daysto tell you Of his many adventures : bow at one placehe picked out two boys out of a party of thirty-si- x ina grand war canoe going on a fighting expeditionhow at another place the Bisbop stood up to the neckin dear cool mouatain water filling the ship's watercasks with' the assistance of friendly natives, howat another island." after having on previous visitsbeen shot at, the Bishop walked for four or fivehourj far inland wherever be pleased, meeting greatcrowds of men, all armed, and, suspicious.. of eachother indeed actually fighting with each other butall friendly with him, how at Spirito Santo, afterhaving tightened his belt, and thrown off bis coat toswim ashore, a canoe came from the land with a nicelad in it, who wished to go to the Bishop's school, bow at Florida Island, never before visited, one, potof some eighty ' men, young 'anT"oTd, standing allaround him on the reef, Tetnrned with him to the'ship; how at Pentecost. Island, a boy eame, bring-ing tha Bisbop bis bow and poisoned arrows., Thesematters, my young friends, were triumphs of theGospel, and kept In the 'Bishop's, mindthose words of Isaiah, Thine heart ShalT fear' andbe enlarged. .j-M j..jWMf oi ! t. fsxlittu

The fatalhistory of Eiromsnga, bas been enacted again. , Thesavages pursued bim be was struck down,' and bisbody was soon mangled with clabs and transfixedwitn arrows. He, who carried the good word of sal- -'

yation to the .children be loved, and lived; for, died,by. their, bands on the face of. the blue waters, where the banana, the cocoanut,' and the paTm 'sunthemselves 'under a Topical sky lying in a canoe, wrapped in native matting, the mortal remains ofthe Melanesian Martyr were found. Smiling sweetly, with eyes closed, Bishop Patteson slept the sleep offeath. He might have died amidst the surroundingsof wealth, and cared for by the tenderest of friends ;be preferred to die on. the beach: of a lovely island, with maddened savages dancing their hideous danceat the sight of his torture. . Tes.be knew it mustcome, that painful end, murdered by those be livedto save; with mysterious presentiments of comingdanger, the ' terrible calamity in air its blacknesscasting the long dark shadow, which the Bishop saw, conscious, painfully conscious of what - was ' tohappen, with a spirit,' feeling that death was nearat hand, every provision was made for the future ;'the will signed ; the successor nominated ; all ar-rangements made. The Mormon trouble threatens to become a veryserious affair, and there seems to be a prospect fora little civil war in Brigbam,Young's domain. TheMormons do not take the arrest of Brigbam Youngand Ibe Mayor of .Salt Lake 5 it a"veiy amiable man-ner. They have indulged in polygamy so long, when other people have been punished tor the of-

fence, that they began to think Uitcle Sam wasafraid, to interfere with, their institution. . The UtahSystem of concubinage has become too offensive tobe longer tolerated, and, as was to bare been ex-pected, its defenders and upholders do not proposeto give it up without a struggle. A gentleman whoarrived from Salt Lake last evening informs usthat there are indications of an effort to resist theUnited States and civil authorities. s lie says theMormons are' buying up alt firearms to be found, and that many of them express their' willingness todefend Mormonism with powder and ball if cir-cumstances require it If. there are polygamistsinUtah who think they an whip out the whole e

United Slates and override law, schoolmas-ters and a lew car loads of geographies, and his-tories of the "unpleasantness" should be sentthem at once. AllaA- -

The most wonderful' people with wbom we havetq" deal "id. these Ifmes are', the 'Japanese.. .Theyseem to have opened the door in intercourse witnthe.world with a determination to be governed bynone of the prejudices which have grown up withtheir isolation. They present notbing'so much asthe appearance of a people who having waked upto the fact that there is a world around them, arenow endeavoring to make up for lest time. Whenfirst tbey begun to take note of outside mattersthey found that greenbacks were the currency inthat nation which not only lies nearest to them, buthas from the first enjoyed the largest share of theirconfidence aad respect Greenbacks', or at leastpaper money, were forthwith introduced into Japanwith an addition to the legal tender clause calculated to make them "go off like hot cakea" theman and a Jap. who should refuse to receive oneof them was to be immediately beheaded. Bat idcourse of time this singular people discovered thatour pa per was the result ;ofa necessity, and thatgold and silver were the two media for the exchangeof products. So now Wei find that "paper moneyhas been discarded and a gold and silver currencyis being substituted, for it as fast as the JapaneseGovernment can turn out the coin. Alia.

The Cincinnati Commercial, in an editorial on theprospects uf the Presidential candidates, gets offthe following clever bit of .sarcasm: ;

And peering upon the scene, benignant as themoon in autumn, smiling upon gathered harvestsand ripe corn, and broad fields spotted with goldenpumpkins, and vineyards purple with grapes, andorchards ruddy with apples,' and woodlands gor-geous with tlie frost works on the leaves, is the faceof "our later Frankliu," Horace Greeley. The immense affection for Oreeley that abides in the heartsof the people, the profound confidence that is every-where felt in his integrity, the general faith in hisgoodness.: Joimtled on .
