Profile

Jonathan Tuckey Design is one of the UK’s leading advocates for remodelling and radically transforming old buildings for modern uses.

Being based in London, a city of historical context with modern needs and demands, we enthusiastically embrace an architecture of change.

We enjoy juxtaposing contemporary elements with some original features of an existing building to give an exciting and dynamic new use.

We have successfully applied this approach to international projects in France, Italy, Germany, the US and Switzerland, where we recently opened our second office. Our clients range from schools, councils, businesses, and charitable trust foundations.

We approach all our projects individually; balancing the historical context of what already exists with careful listening to what clients require and want to feel about the finished space.

How we work

Unlike most architects today we explore and develop our ideas through ‘actual’ models. We believe that this process is the best way to develop the design and communicate our ideas to our clients. It enables a clearer visualisation of the project, thus serving to extend concepts far beyond the excepted through discussion and collaboration, via the model, with the client.

Design Team Jonathan Tuckey

Director

Jonathan established JTD in 1999. He had previously worked with David Chipperfield Architects and trained at Kingston University. Alongside practice Jonathan has taught Architecture at Oxford Brookes, Kingston, London Metropolitan University and Greenwich University.

Hugo Hardy MA (Hons) Dip Arch RIBA

Hugo has extensive experience in developing numerous projects that addressed social and environmental challenges. He was leading on schools and housing schemes for Milton Keynes council. Additionally, Hugo as completed several new school buildings and worked on many feasibility studies for council projects.

Ryuta Hirayama MA (Hons) Dip Arch ARB

Ryuta has worked for several practices both in Japan and the UK. He has extensive experience in public buildings, including a children and adolescents mental health unit, an infant’s school, a hospital extension and a refurbishment of a primary school. Ryuta has also worked as a Project Architect on several commercial and domestic projects.

Heidi Lee MA BSc (Hons) DipArch

Heidi won the RIBA bronze medal in 2009. She has extensive experience in masterplanning. Heidi has been working at the practise mainly on competitions, successfully being shortlisted for the Andermatt New Village proposal in 2011.

Design Team Aneta Szymczyk

MA Dip Arch

Aneta has experience in working as an architect on various projects in the private and public sector that included mixed housing schemes, retail and commercial developments. Recently she was involved in a large project for a sustainable residential community building in Ireland. She also accomplished several large projects in Cyprus for government clients.

Nic Howett Bsc (Hons) DipArch

Nic recently completed his Diploma in Architecture. He has previously project lead on a £1million new school building and recently collaborated on a highly commended doctors surgery. He is now working on a small scale school building and grade II listed mews in West London. Nic was shortlisted for the RIBA silver medal in 2010.

Peter Youthed Bsc (Hons) DipArch

Peter recently completed his Diploma in  Architecture. He has previously worked for Lynch Architects, working on a wide variety of projects including a scheme for a mix of office and retail space, affordable housing and new library within the masterplan for Victoria Transport Interchange, and for Witherford Watson Mann Architects on their strategy for the Olympic Park Legacy Masterplan.

Wynne Leung BA (Hons)

Wynne won the RIBA bronze medal in 2009. She previously worked for two years at KCA on numerous masterplanning projects in London, and most recently has run the Andermatt Swiss Alps competitions, where we were shortlisted in 2011.

Collaboration

We embrace collaboration within all of our projects.

Those we undertake overseas are conducted in partnership with a local practise whose local expertise consistently proves invaluable from the outset through to project completion.

We foster excellent working relations with specialists in other fields including landscape architects, craftsmen, and tradesmen.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of all our projects. We bring old buildings up to modern environmental standards using local materials in innovative ways. This means we ‘recycle’ buildings and minimise demolition; thus being both more cost-efficient and more environmentally friendly.
