IESNA LM-80-08: It starts with the LED. LM-80 is the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) approved standard for measuring lumen maintenance of LED light sources. LM-80 provides the framework for the reliable measurement of lumen maintenance and color-point stability of LEDs, at the component level. Testing under LM-80 is typically conducted for several thousand hours (ex: 6,000-10,000 hours), the results of which are further evaluated under IES TM-21-11 to provide insights into lumen maintenance under operating conditions within the luminaire.

IESNA TM-21-11: Utilizing data collected under LM-80, TM-21 is the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) approved standard for projecting long-term lumen maintenance of LED light sources. The results of this standard provides the framework under which Hubbell Lighting reports LED source lifetime. Under this standard, the LED drive current and LED operating temperatures are utilized along with a corresponding LM-80 data set to calculate the expect LED lumen deprecation and lifetime.

IESNA LM-82-12: LED Light engines are evaluated under LM-82, which is the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) approved method for determining photometric properties as a function of temperature for LED light engines and integral lamps.

IESNA LM-79-08: Historically the lighting industry has used relative photometry to evaluate the photometric performance of luminaires. Since the light emitted from an LED luminaire is a function of a number of variables, some of which include the operating temperature and drive current of the LEDs, an absolute testing standard, which provides configuration-specific performance, is utilized. LM-79 is the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) approved method, which describes the procedures and precautions for performing reproducible measurements of total luminous flux, electrical power, luminous intensity distribution and chromaticity of solid-state lighting (SSL) products for illumination purposes under standard conditions.

In Situ Temperature Measurement Test (ISTMT): In Situ Temperature Measurement Tests are used to measure the operational temperatures of luminaire components (LEDs, optical materials, power supplies, etc.), under the range of ambient temperatures the product is rated for. These measurements are utilized in conjunction with other test standards (LM-8-, TM-21) to determine the expected luminaire, and component, lifetime under operating conditions.

Understanding LED Technology

LED luminaires use light emitting diodes to produce light more efficiently than other white-light sources. The movement of electrons through a semiconductor material produces photons as electrons and holes combine. LEDs generate less heat than legacy sources, but the heat that is produced must be managed and drawn away from the LED through a heat sink to maximize efficacy and lifetime.

A light emitting diode or LED light is in its simplest form is comprised of two semiconductor materials. When a voltage potential is applied between these materials, blue light is produced and is converted to a full-spectrum white light source through a phosphor layer.

LED lighting is fundamentally different from conventional light sources such as incandescent, fluorescent, and gas-discharge lamps. An LED uses no mercury, no lead, no gas or filament, it has no fragile glass components and it has no failure-prone moving parts.

By addressing the unique properties and requirements of LED technology, Hubbell Lighting continues to unlock the value of LED and the promise of efficiency, reliability and sustainability.
