Our portable equipment for on-location shoots includes high-definition digital video cameras, an assortment of lighting (spot light, flood lights, small lights, hard lights, soft lights) and sound equipment (boom, wireless, and hand-held microphones and mixers).

If you aspire to write and bring stories to life, JPCatholic’s Screenwriting curriculum will give you the training and network you need to succeed. Program director Christopher Riley is a veteran WGA screenwriter and applies his professional experience directly to your curriculum. You’ll graduate with polished screenplays, a professional network, and mentors who care about you personally and spiritually.

JPCatholic’s patron Saint John Paul the Great was an accomplished actor and playwright in his youth and believed in the power of performance to communicate truth and beauty, and to positively impact society.

JPCatholic’s Acting emphasis is dedicated to the training of exceptional actors who are prepared to use their skills in service of the New Evangelization. The acting curriculum is designed to develop body, voice and speech, as well as intellect and spirit, and, following John Paul II’s own Christian Humanism, tends to the formation of the whole person, a person who’s prepared to bring his or her gifts to the Church and the world.

This intensive curriculum is taught by veterans of both the stage and screen. Under their instruction and guidance, actors are prepared to work in theatre, television and film.

The curriculum will prepare you to write, produce, and direct multi-camera television productions for multiple platform dissemination. The hands-on production curriculum is combined with a high-level understanding of the business principles and organizational structures which underly broadcast and cable networks, local TV stations, and studios and independent production companies. You’ll gain real experience and have the opportunity to do a major capstone TV production.

St. John Paul the Great was one of the 20th century’s most gifted communicators. Naturally telegenic, he understood and employed the power of television to bring the truth of the Gospel to millions of people. Students at JPCatholic are trained to excel in mainstream multi-camera television industry, but they are also imbued with an understanding of the moral dimension and power of television.

St. John Paul the Great spoke of Journalism as a “sacred” task to promote truth and the common good. At JPCatholic, you can discover the higher calling of journalism and acquire the diverse skills to excel in a rapidly changing news industry.

The curriculum combines principles of traditional journalism and research with practical training in how to tell your stories across multiple platforms including print, online, and television. You’ll gain real experience and have the opportunity to do a major investigative exposé in the senior capstone project.

Professor Culbertson worked as a studio director at CNN and as a member of the White House Press Corps, traveling extensively with President Reagan during his term. He has managed multiple TV studios, as well as large editorial, production, and engineering staffs.

At JPCatholic, juniors will have the opportunity to experience the Los Angeles entertainment industry up close as part of the LA internship quarter. The experience involves spending a full quarter living in student housing in the Los Angeles area while working in an immersive internship for credit. While in Los Angeles, you will gain insight into the industry and network with established professionals through our “Behind the Scenes” class.

In addition to the internship and networking opportunities, you’ll start to build your resume aided by the career planning process taught in our Career Strategies class in LA. You will stay on track for graduation by taking two general education courses online during the quarter using JPCatholic’s eLearning platform.

While students are not guaranteed success obtaining a specific internship, past Los Angeles internships have included: Alcon Entertainment (producers of The Blind Side and The Book of Eli), MPower Productions (a company run by executive Steve McEveety who produced Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and The Passion of the Christ), Motive Entertainment (marketing firm behind Rocky Balboa and The Passion of the Christ), and the Cortez Brothers (a high end production company whose clients include The Tonight Show and Rolling Stone).

Unlike many study abroad or spring break trips, our program is short, intensive, and focused on understanding how Christianity impacted European culture from the early Church through the Medieval and Renaissance periods.

Students first head to London, spending several days in this spectacularly diverse and historically rich capital of England. They visit the Globe theatre, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and a wealth of other cultural sites.

We next take a change of pace, spending almost a week in County Cork, Ireland, residing in quaint cabins in a quiet village which grew up around a monastery established by St. Fachtna in the 500s AD. There is plenty of time to hike the stunning countryside, explore ancient ruins, and just relax in front of the fireplace.

Finally, it’s Italy. The culmination of the trip is arriving in Rome and attending Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Here, the Faith comes alive; standing with hundreds of our brothers and sisters from around the world, we experience not a stale and stagnant history, but the vibrant Universal Church.

I have the privilege of being a part of the design team at Drive Studio – I am involved with the entire spectrum of the creative process, including creating concepts, building 3D models, compositing, animating and video editing.

Demand for sophisticated animation and modeling work is coming from many different industries: film, TV, video gaming, commercials, and more. Our Animation emphasis will give you the professional skill set to take advantage of these opportunities, in addition to the ability to enhance your value with a deep understanding of storytelling and narrative structure.

You will build an artistic foundation in drawing, CGI, color and design theory, and software like Photoshop and Maya. Building on this foundation, you dive into 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, animation, and compositing, while continuing to dive deeper into the dynamics of how animated films, TV shows, and video games tell stories. Once you’ve mastered 3D modeling, you’ll move into creating whole environments and exciting characters. Everything culminates in your senior project, where you bring your creations to life in a short film or visual project.

The video game industry is a global phenomenon with a larger market than both the music and film industries combined. It is one of the fastest growing sectors in the US economy, and has significant impact on our culture, both positive and negative. The Game Art and Design emphasis integrates theory and practice to prepare you for a career in the video game industry.

You will be exposed to a variety of design concepts and tools related to creating video games including: storytelling and gameplay design, level design, user experience, interactive game environment and character animation.

You’ll use tools like Autodesk Maya, Unreal 3D game engine, and C++ programming. You’ll immerse yourself in your creation firsthand in our virtual reality lab. In your capstone experience, you will apply design concepts within different game genres to create a working prototype of a video game.

The New Evangelization emphasis embraces his exhortation and features a seamless integration of Sacred Scripture and theology, new media, and film production. You’ll complete a comprehensive curriculum of Scripture, Catholic theology, and philosophy. You’ll understand how to teach this material and incorporate it into your own prayer life.

You’ll acquire the media production and business management training to share the Gospel using new media as a youth minister, Catholic media professional, or lay apostolate entrepreneur. You can also advance into our MA in Biblical Theology program to prepare for a career in teaching.
