Purposeful Eating Has Healthful Benefits for

You and Malnourished Children

Will you accept the challenge for the month of October to help

malnourished children become healthy? If you try the curtailed diet plan

below, not only will you be able to save some money to donate to the

Worm Project, but you may drop a few pounds and feel better yourself.

We hope you will consider being a “Purposeful Eater” for one month.

With the low cost of the de-worming tablet (1.55 cents) provided by the

Worm Project, thousands and even tens of thousands of children could

be given a new lease on life with a few dietary changes on our part.

Here is a plan that might help:

Review unhealthy eating habits

Curtail or restrict some of them for the month of October

(sodas, chips, donuts, fries, etc)

Make wise food choices recommended by nutritionists

Form a workable strategy that slowly and deliberately achieves a

desired goal- potential weight loss and possible donation amount for

the Worm Project

Aiding this strategy would be a “Light Fast,” whereby one makes a

commitment to eat more simply and responsibly for the sake of the

hungry (less of the more costly refined food, substituting instead more

legumes, grains, veggies, etc.). Legitimate fasting is done without

fanfare. For that reason it is best to do it mostly at home. And even at

home it should not be forced on family members unless all are in

agreement.

With just $2.00 a week in savings,1,000 children could enjoy a better

life. This “sacrificing” could be a symbolic act that would give extra

incentive to carry through on the commitment. The $2.00 a week would

enable one treatment every six months for three years. Total cost for

each six treatments over three years: 10 cents.

Such a decision would greatly increase the food available to the chroni-

cally malnourished. It would also reduce the donor’s risk of contracting

diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even some cancers.

The “payback” is a greater sense of well being, both emotionally and

physically. Even God gets into the act, “He who is kind to the poor

lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done

(Proverbs 19:17). We do a favor to ourselves by serving others. Take

the challenge at Zion and be a “Purposeful Eater.”

Creatin Care Tidbits

I recently visited my sister who lives out of state and I noticed she used “wool dryer balls” in her clothes dryer. I asked her about them and learned that these handy balls take the place of those dryer sheets many of us use in our dryers (which my dad always used to tell me were not good for the workings of the dryer). Anyway, these wool dryer balls commonly made in Australia or New Zealand where they have lots of sheep, go in your dryer and help your clothes dry a little faster, cut down on static cling and soften your clothes like a fabric softener. They are reusable, which keeps those dryer sheets out of the landfills. When I got home I bought some. The directions on mine tell me to wash them after they look a little used in an old sock in a warm wash load and leave them in the sock in the dryer and they’ll refresh to use again. Most brands will last you about a year depending how many loads of wash you do. You can get them at various stores: Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, and online from Norwex and Amazon. Now, of course you can be even more creation care friendly by drying your clothes, sheets and other items on drying racks or lines either outside or inside your home. Another trick my sister taught me is to put a little diluted (with water) white vinegar in your fabric softener spot on your washer for the rinse cycle and this will take excess soap out of your wash and also make your towels, etc. softer. White vinegar is an inexpensive item that has many uses. You might want to check that out online. Another household tip to cut down on waste is instead of buying the disposable covers for mops buy the mops that have the cloth (sometimes like a terry cloth or pad) covers that you can simply rinse out and throw in the washing machine. They are reusable so cut down on waste and are economical over the long term. The last word of advice from my sister is to plan ahead and combine your errands when you are “out and about” doing shopping or other chores. You’ll cut down on the fuel you use and the wear and tear on your car.

Nursery School News

My favorite time of year is finally here! I love seeing the new school year begin. The classrooms being decorated, the preparing of new programs, the smiling faces of the children when they come through the door. This year we welcomed 60 children to our programs. We made some small changes to our program this year. The Pre-K 5 year old class was extended to a 5 day program. It is proving to be a hit. We have 11 children out of 16 taking advantage of those extra days. With the addi-tion of children we added a new staff member ~ Mrs. Yvonne Diamond. She has always been a great substitute for us in the past and now is able to be a regular in the classroom. She has made a great addition to our staff. We have also added a chapel and library time to the 3 year old curriculum. This helps them to get to know our sanctuary and what we do in there. During the month of September, the 4 and 5 year olds

classes enjoyed a trip to Tabora Farms for apple picking. It is al-ways a treat to go there and to be able to pick your own apple. The 3 year old class will put on their boots for a trip to the pumpkin patch in October.

Bean Bag Project Starts

Delivering Weekend Food Supplies Thanks to those who contributed during the September Project of

the Month to help support the Bean Bag Food Program. Food

deliveries will be starting again this month, providing elementary

school students with a bag filled with food for every weekend

throughout the school year.

Students identified by the school as “food insecure” often struggle

with their studies when they arrive at school hungry. The Bean

Bags include nutritious food items for two breakfasts, lunches and

snacks over the weekend.

Schools participating this school year include E. M. Crouthamel.

Franconia and West Broad Street elementary schools. The program

hopes to serve at least 40 students each week. Cost for each bag is

approximately $12. Donations can be made to the church office

throughout the school year.

Volunteers interested in

helping with the weekly bag

packing can contact the

office. Please consider

helping or donating to this

project to help end hunger

and improve educational

opportunities at our local

elementary schools.

The Daily Positive Wisdom is like a right of passage. To be wise is to hit the highest level of

quality experience, knowledge, and judgment. Wisdom forms a solid

foundation that goes beyond intelligence. It’s being honest about who you are

and taking the time to develop yourself to be more like Christ.

James 3:13-18 speaks on wisdom and says: “Who is wise and understanding

among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility

that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in

your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not

come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you

have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving,

considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”

If you are seeking to grow in wisdom, here are five tips:

1. Stand with integrity Sometimes life isn’t pretty. It comes with the good, the bad, and the ugly. But

people with integrity accept themselves as whole people and are always

striving to live for truth. These people stand out because of what they stand for.

2. Walk in humility Pride is a killer of wisdom. Those who say they are wise are typically just the

opposite. The wise are humble servants. They don’t realize the wisdom they

have because they are too busy looking at others as more important than

themselves.

3. Escape selfishness Just as the wise walk in humility, they also escape from selfish desires. Though

selfishness is a natural part of this broken world, the wise are aware of those

desires and flee from their trap.

4. Harvest peace As the verse above states, the peacemakers harvest righteousness. Growth can-

not happen from constant chaos. Though storms will come, the wise find the

small bits of peace within the storm, and from there is where they harvest good

fruit.

5. Speak truth with grace and love Speaking truth is hard in a world filled with lies, but when you think of

someone who is wise, this person usually is the one people go to for advice.

Wise people speak truth with love and grace often stirring up conviction and

changing lives.

Think of someone you know who is wise and thank him/her for impacting your

life!

Mission Moment

Calendar continued from page 12.

Please continue to keep these men in your prayers, and to share 2017

calendars (pocket or wall size, with no spiral bindings), and used or

new devotion booklets (mark out or clip off any names/addresses)

with them. All of this is wonderful spiritual food for their difficult

journey.

We pray that your Advent/Christmas season brings you to a blessed

and faith-filled 2017!

The Protestant Church in SCI Graterford

Dear Zion Mennonite Church, Thank you so much for your support toward my MCC SALT Mission year. I appreciate how welcoming the church has been to me every time I visit my grandmom. It was a blessing to be able to attend the Pittsburg Mennonite Convention with the Zion Youth Group. Thank you for including me in your congregational family. I am excited to begin my service in Managua, Nicaragua and meet all of the children I will be teaching. I plan to keep you updated on the adventures through out my journey. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Our Prayer Partner and Calendar Donor Churches

Another year coming to an end—and continued THANKS!

To our sisters and brothers in Jesus:

It has been a year (!) since we last wrote to you, our

faithful churches and friends who feed the ministries in

the Protestant congregation—and for the entire prison

population—with your prayers, prayer requests and do-

nations of yearly calendars and religious literature.

Please don’t take this long silence as forgetfulness.

We are reminded of your “Jesus brand of love” every time an inmate

thanks us for the calendar he has received from you, or reads the first

three days of his new monthly devotion booklet before he reaches his

block, or finds hope and strength knowing you are reading his prayer

request and bowing your heads. What you share with these men speaks

eloquently of God’s Love offered by human hands.

Because our congregation believes so strongly in the power of prayer,

one way they see to express their gratitude for you is to pray on your

behalf. Every prayer request you send to us is received seriously

and prayed over again and again. While we understand that it might

not be everyone’s faith practice to write down personal needs for

prayer, we hope you will continue to share what you can as a way to

connect our congregations spiritually.

We are now collecting 2017 calendars for distribution in October, so we

hope you can continue this ministry as well. While it might seem men

with long sentences would have little need for a day-by-day calendar,

their lives—like ours—are measured by each new day.

“How are you, Mr. Jones?”

“I’m blessed, Chaplain Gates! Every morning when I look out

my cell window, I see something I’ve never seen before.”

“What’s that, Mr. Jones?”

“Today, Chaplain Gates, today.”
