Hofstra dropped a 22-18 decision to Cornell at the NYAC on February 3, 2007, a 25-13 decision to #5 Michigan on January 2, 2006, an 18-17 decision to Oregon State on November 17, 2005, a 30-10 decision to #1 Oklahoma State on February 13, 2005, and a 20-12 decision to #17 Cornell on February 5, 2005 at the Hofstra Arena. Before that, the last home dual match that the Pride dropped was on November 29, 2003 when the ninth-ranked Cornhuskers of Nebraska downed Hofstra, 30-10. BACK TO THE NORTHEAST DUALS: Hofstra returns to the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Collegiate Duals on Saturday after a highly successful appearance last November. Hofstra went 4-0 in the 2006 Northeast Duals at Guilderland High School with a tone-setting 18-17 victory over #1 Minnesota, and wins over American (33-12), Princeton (45-6), Bloomsburg (27- 15). The loss to the Pride would be the only dual match loss that the Golden Gophers of Minnesota would suffer on their way to the national championship. HOFSTRA THIS YEAR: Hofstra, in its 60th season of wrestling, is 0-2 on the year with losses to #7 Missouri and #10 Penn State. The Pride, who have one of the most challenging schedules in school history, will face nine opponents that finished in the Top 25 at last March’s NCAA Division I Championship, three dual tournaments and two major in-season tournaments. Hofstra returns 10 lettermen, five starters, four NCAA qualifiers, four conference champions and one All- American from the 2006-07 squad. Heading the group is returning All-American and CAA Wrestler of the Year, senior Charles Griffin. The Reading, PA native placed third at 141 pounds in the NCAA Championships after capturing his third CAA title pounds. Sophomore Lou Ruggirello was named the CAA Rookie of the Year after a superb 31-9 season and a capturing the conference crown at 133. Seniors Dave Tomasette (Sewell, NJ), at 125, and Joe Rovelli (Wilkes-Barre, PA), who moves up this year to 197 pounds from 184, also captured conference titles last season. The Pride also has another conference champion, albeit not a CAA champion, in their line- up this season. RETURNING ALL-AMERICAN: Senior Charles Griffin,who recorded a 6-1 record and a third-place finish in the NCAAChampionships in Auburn Hills, MI last March, is Hofstra’sonly returning All-American of the four that the Pride had lastseason. Chris Weidman, who also placed third at 197 and iscurrently a Hofstra assistant coach, James Strouse, who placedfourth at 157, and Mike Patrovich, who placed sixth at 165, havesince graduated. Griffin, who placed third at 141 pounds lastseason, finished the year with a 35-6 record.

HOFSTRA COACH TOMSHIFFLET: Tom Shifflet, a four-time NCAA Championshipsqualifier and a three-time All-American as a student-athlete atEdinboro University, became the10th head wrestling coach inHofstra’s storied wrestling historyon May 17, 2006. His first seasonas the Hofstra Head WrestlingCoach in 2006-07 was one for therecord books. Shifflet directed thePride to an 18-4-2 dual record, afinal record season ranking ofninth, the program’s sixth straight

Colonial Athletic Association championship and the school’sseventh consecutive conference title, an upset victory of top-ranked Minnesota in November, a sixth-place finish at theNWCA National Duals and, most importantly, a seventh-placefinish at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Auburn Hills,Michigan. Along the way, the Pride developed four All-Americans, seven conference champions including the CAAWrestler of the Year and the Rookie of the Year. For Shifflet’sefforts, he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Coachof the Year.

Shifflet came to Hofstra after four seasons as head wrestlingcoach at UNC Greensboro. While at UNCG, he created andorganized the annual 35-team Southern Scuffle wrestlingtournament, which is one of the largest and more competitiveDivision I regular season tournaments in the country. During histenure at UNC Greensboro Shifflet recorded a 32-32 dual meetrecord and had nine wrestlers qualify for the NCAAChampionships.

A three-time All-American and a four-time national qualifier asa student-athlete at national powerhouse Edinboro Universityfrom 1992 through 1995, Shifflet began his coaching career asan assistant at Georgia State University in1995, helping thePanthers post back-to-back winning seasons, and develop threeconference champions and four NCAA qualifiers. In 1997,Shifflet left Georgia State to begin a five-year tenure as anassistant coach at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.During his time with the Big Red, Shifflet coached 24 NCAAqualifiers, three NCAA All-Americans and helped head coachRob Koll to a pair of Ivy League championships in 1999 and2001. More importantly, Cornell was also consistently rankedamong the nation's top-15 programs. The last Big Red recruitingclass, that he was involved with, placed fifth at the 2006 NCAAChampionships in Oklahoma City.

After five seasons at Cornell, the Amherst, New York nativewas named the head wrestling coach at UNC Greensboro onMay 17, 2002. In 2003-04 the Spartans claimed their firstwinning season since 1998-99, posting a 9-6 overall record with

the nine victories ranking as the third most in the program's 12-year history. Shifflet guided UNCG to the most wins in schoolhistory during the 2004-05 season as the Spartans recorded a 12-5 overall record, 4-1 in the Southern Conference. In 2005-06UNCG tied a school-record by sending four wrestlers to theNCAA Division I Championships in Oklahoma City and theSpartans finished tied for 31st with Harvard in the finalChampionship standings. The Spartans finished the season withan 11-6 dual match record and a 4-1 mark in the SouthernConference. As a wrestler, Shifflet registered 118 wins for theEdinboro Fighting Scots and was coached by the legendaryBruce Baumgartner. Competing at 142 pounds, Shifflet finishedseventh at nationals as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore andthird as a senior. He is one of four three-time All-Americans inschool history. Shifflet also received the Eastern WrestlingLeague Freshman of the Year Award in 1992 and the EWLWrestler of the Year Award in 1995. He was inducted into boththe Edinboro University and the EWL Halls of Fame in 2006.In 1996 Shifflet placed seventh in the final U.S. Olympic Trialsin freestyle wrestling at 149.5 pounds. One year later he placedsixth in both the World Team Freestyle Trials and the U.S.Open.

HOFSTRA IS RANKED 13TH IN THE2007-08 USATODAY /INTERMAT/NWCA POLL: The Hofstra Pridewrestling team fell one place to 13th thisweek in the USA Today/ Intermat/NWCADivision I Team Rankings as ofNovember 22.

Hofstra, which is 0-2 on the young seasonwith losses to #7 Missouri and #8 Penn State, garnered 339points in the poll. The Pride will wrestle against #25Bloomsburg University, #3 Oklahoma State and BucknellUniversity this Saturday at the Journeymen/Brute NortheastDuals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NewYork. Hofstra matches begin at Noon.

Individually, five Hofstra wrestlers are ranked in the Top 20 oftheir respective weight classes in the Intermat/NWCA/NWMAIndividual Rankings this week. Leading the five is sophomoreLou Ruggirello (2-0), who is ranked fourth at 133. All-American and CAA Wrestler of the Year, senior Charles Griffin(1-1) fell from second to fifth this week at 141. Three-timeconference champion and NCAA qualifier Joe Rovelli (1-1)remained in sixth at 197 pounds while three-time NCAAqualifier and two-time conference champion, senior DaveTomasette (1-1)) fell one place to eighth at 125 pounds in thepoll. Junior Alton Lucas (2-0) enters the poll this week, placing16th at 174 pounds.

STARTING OFF WITH A BANG: Although the Pride hasopened seasons with several tough opponents in the past, thisyear’s first four matches may be among the best. After havingwrestled against #7 Missouri and current #8 Penn State already,the Pride will face #25 Bloomsburg University, #3 OklahomaState and an up-and-coming Bucknell University squad thisweekend in the Northeast Duals. Only the 2001-02 team mayhave faced a tougher four-match opening stretch when theysquared off against Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

GRIFFIN AND RUGGIRELLO VICTORIOUS IN NWCAALL-STAR CLASSIC: Hofstra University sophomore 133-pounder Lou Ruggirello and senior 141-pounder Charles Griffinboth picked up ranked victories in front of 4,380 spectators atthe 42nd National Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWA) All-Star Classic presented by the United State Marine Corps atMcArthur Court on Monday night.

The Pride was the lone school to have two victories in theprestigious event, as Ruggirello defeated #2 Mack Reiter(Minnesota), 6-0, and Griffin earned a 9-4 win over #3 NathanMorgan of Oklahoma State.

The win by Ruggirello continued an impressive stretch for thesecond-year standout as in Hofstra's season-opening dual hepinned then-#2 Tyler McCormick of Missouri and now in hislast two matches has outscored his opponents, 21-0. Griffin, who was down 4-1 early in the match to Morgan,scored eight consecutive points, including riding time.

The two Hofstra victories are the school's first in All-StarClassic history in five featured matched. Previously Joel Kislinwrestled twice in the Classic in 1972 and 1973, and Nick Gallowrestled in the 1977 Classic. In addition to Griffin's and

PRIDE TO RETURN TO THE LAS VEGASINVITATIONAL: The Cliff Keen Las Vegas CollegiateWrestling Invitational returns to the Las Vegas ConventionCenter on November 30 and December 1 and the Pride will bethere for the fourth consecutive year. The Las Vegas Invitationalwas held at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, NV last yearafter several years at the Cashman Convention Center in LasVegas’ Old Town area. The Pride placed ninth of 47 schools lastyear, 11th in 2005, and third in 2004. Chris Skretkowicz is theonly Hofstra wrestler to capture a title in Las Vegas, winning the197-pound weight class in 2004.

GOING SOUTH FOR THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS: TheSouthern Scuffle in Greensboro, NC developed to become oneof the top early-season tournaments in the country thanks, inlarge part, to one man. That man, Tom Shifflet, returns with hisPride team for the first time on December 29 & 30. Shiffletcreated the tournament while leading the Spartans of UNC-Greensboro.

HOFSTRA TO RETURN TO THE NWCA NATIONALDUALS: Hofstra will make its fifth straight National Dualsappearance, and sixth since the 2000-01 season in January whenthe NWCA-Cliff Keen National Duals are held at the Universityof Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA, on January 12 and 13. Lastyear, Hofstra was 3-2 in competition at the National Duals andplaced sixth with wins over Nebraska, Northern Iowa andCentral Michigan, and losses to Iowa and Iowa State. The Prideposted a 3-3 mark in 2004, a 1-2 mark in 2005, and 0-2 marks in2001 and 2006.

CONFERENCE UNDEFEATED STREAK NOW AT 54:After a perfect 7-0 mark in CAA dual matches last season,Hofstra has extended its conference dual match undefeatedstreak to 54 (53-0-1). The Pride has won 51 consecutiveconference dual matches. Pride sophomore Lou Ruggirello pinned Missouri’s second-ranked senior Tyler McCormick in 5:30 at 133 pounds, whileteammates Charles Griffin at 141, Dave Tomasette at 125, andAlton Lucas at 174 posted major decision victories to leadHofstra.

The Pride jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the match after threebouts. Tomasette, the seventh-ranked Hofstra senior fromSewell, NJ, tallied a 15-2 major decision over Missouri red-shirtfreshman Tony Pescaglia at 125. Ruggirello, ranked ninth at 133in the preseason poll, built a 5-1 lead over the second-rankedTiger senior Tyler McCormick before recording the pin at 5:30.Hofstra’s lone returning All-American, senior Charles Griffin,ranked second in the country at 141, cruised to a 13-0 majorvictory over Missouri’s unranked junior Marcus Hoehn.

But the Tigers came roaring back in the middle weights as ninth-ranked senior Josh Wagner tallied a 5-2 win over Hofstra’sunranked sophomore Mitch Smith at 149 pounds. Missourijunior Michael Chandler, ranked 13th, closed the match gap to14-7 with a 15-6 major win over the Pride’s unrankedsophomore Jonny Bonilla-Bowman. Tiger sophomore NickMarable, ranked 18th at 165, rolled to a major win over Hofstrafreshman Ryan Patrovich, 10-2, to close to 14-11 at theintermission.

Hofstra’s unranked junior Alton Lucas snapped the Tigers’three-match winning streak with a 10-1 victory over seniorJames Williamson at 174 to boost the Hofstra lead to 18-11. ButMissouri’s sixth-ranked junior Raymond Jordan pinned Hofstrafreshman Jeff Siciliano in 4:20 at 184 to close to within one at18-17.

November 17 at #10 Penn State: Despite a 15-0 tech fallvictory by sophomore Lou Ruggirello at 133 pounds, the #12Hofstra Pride wrestling team dropped a 28-11 decision to #10Penn State before 1,965 fans at the Rec Hall Saturday afternoon.The loss drops Hofstra's record to 0-2 this season while theNittany Lions improved to 2-0. The Pride, who defeated theNittany Lions in Hempstead last December, captured just threeof the 10 matches Saturday afternoon.

Beginning the match at 197 pounds, Penn State’s second-rankedsenior Phil Davis (2-0) avenged a loss to Hofstra’s ChrisWeidman last season by posting a 12-1 major decision oversixth-ranked Pride senior Joe Rovelli (1-1) for a 4-0 lead in thecontest. Sophomore Stefan Tighe (2-0) pinned Hofstra juniorJames Guerin (0-2) in 5:19 of the heavyweight match to boostthe lead to 10-0. In a battle of top 10-ranked wrestlers at 125pounds, 10th-ranked Penn State senior Mark McKnight (2-0)tallied all three of his points in the second period and held on todefeat Hofstra’s seventh-ranked senior Dave Tomasette (1-1), 3-2, as the Nittany Lions took a 13-0 lead.

Fairfax, VA - The Pride captured seven individual titles, a thirdplace finish and a fourth place finish as the Pride cruised to theirsixth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Championshipat Linn Gymnasium at George Mason University.

Hofstra sent seven wrestlers to the 2007 NCAA Division IWrestling Championships from March 15-17 in Auburn Hills,MI, recorded a school-record 138.5 points, topping the previousmark of 136 set in 2005. The seven individual conferencechampions also ties the school mark for most individual crowns,set in 2005 and 2006.

Senior Mike Patrovich, who captured his third conference title,posted two tech fall and a pin during the Championships andwas named the Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler. Threeother Pride wrestlers recorded their third conference title assenior James Strouse, at 157, and juniors Charles Griffin, at 141,and Joe Rovelli, at 184, notched their third straight CAAcrowns. Junior Dave Tomasette, at 125, copped his second CAAtitle, while senior Chris Weidman, at 197, who was an All-American last year as a conference finalist, captured his firstCAA title, as did freshman Lou Ruggirello at 133. Saturday, March 3, 2007 at CAA Championships Day Two:Hofstra captured seven individual titles, a third place finish anda fourth place finish as the Pride cruised to their sixthconsecutive Colonial Athletic Association ChampionshipSaturday night at Linn Gymnasium at George Mason University.

Hofstra, which will send seven wrestlers to the 2007 NCAADivision I Wrestling Championships from March 15-17 inAuburn Hills, MI, recorded a school record 138.5 points,topping the previous mark of 136 set in 2005. The sevenindividual conference champions also ties the school mark formost individual crowns, set in 2005 and 2006.

Senior Mike Patrovich, who captured his third conference title,posted two tech fall and a pin during the Championships andwas named the Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler. Threeother Pride wrestlers recorded their third conference title assenior James Strouse, at 157, and juniors Charles Griffin, at 141,and Joe Rovelli, at 184, notched their third straight CAAcrowns. Junior Dave Tomasette, at 125, copped his second CAAtitle, while senior Chris Weidman, at 197, who was an All-American last year as a conference finalist, captured his firstCAA title, as did freshman Lou Ruggirello at 133. Those seven,along with sophomore Alton Lucas, who received one of thethree "wild-card" bids after finishing fourth in this weekend'stournament, will compete in the NCAA Championships in twoweeks.

Friday, March 2, 2007 at CAA Championships Day One: Allten Pride wrestlers advanced to the semifinal round after postinga combined record of 15-0, including eight wins by fall, as thePride took a commanding 20-point lead after the first day of the2007 Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships atthe Linn Gymnasium on the campus of George MasonUniversity.

Hofstra dominated action on day one with eight pins, four techfalls, two major decisions and a win by medical default. ThePride has accumulated 46 points in the team standings, 20 morethan second place Rider, and 20.5 more than third-place OldDominion. Drexel is fourth with 21.5 points with Sacred Heartfifth with 12.5 points.

Senior Chris Weidman (26-7), at 197, and graduate-student MattPollock (14-22), at 285, each recorded two pins on the day toadvance to the semifinals. Weidman, the top seed at 197, pinnedBinghamton's Ed Backus in 2:32 in the first round, and Wagner'sVin Giordano in 2:18 in the quarterfinals. He will face Drexel'sfourth-seeded Jon Oplinger in the 197 semifinals. The twofaced each other in the CAA Duals in January with Weidmanposting an 11-2 major decision. Pollock, who posted back-to-back fall victories since November, pinned George Mason'sthird-seeded Ryan Kittrick in 4:27 in the first round, andCampbell's sixth-seeded Jeremiah Fennell in 1:06 in the

Strouse, who pinnedWagner's Sean Quinn in 1:55 before posting a 17-2 tech fall onSacred Heart's Mike Hartman, will face Rider's fourth-seededNate Galloway in the 157 semifinals. Griffin, who pinnedWagner's Nick Keshecki's in 2:46 before Drexel's Dave Giliodefaulted 28 seconds into the quarterfinal with a leg injury, willface Old Dominion's fourth-seeded Ryan Williams in the 141semifinals.

Senior Mike Parziale (14-9) posted a 23-8 tech fall overCampbell's Chris Mazzatta and a 15-5 major decision overJames Madison's Nick Broccoli. Parziale will face BostonUniversity's fourth-seeded Mike Roberts in the 149 semifinals.

Five other Pride grapplers wrestled just once on day one toadvance to the semifinals. Junior Joe Rovelli (29-5) pinnedJMU's Andrew Bauman in 2:43 at 184 pounds. He will faceSacred Heart's Andrew Silber in the semifinals. Freshman LouRuggirello (29-7) pinned Binghamton's Robert Slavin in 1:23 toadvance to the 133 semifinals against James Madison's fifth-seeded Brandon Luce. Saturday, February 17, 2007 at #15 Oklahoma: The 15th-ranked Sooners of Oklahoma won four of the first five matcheson the way to a 21-13 victory over eighth-ranked Hofstra at theMcCasland Field House. Starting out at 125 pounds, the Prideforfeited the match to top-ranked Sam Hazewinkel. At 133,Hofstra’s 18th-ranked freshman Lou Ruggirello defeated JoeComparin 6-2 to cut the deficit to 6-3. But the Sooners won thenext three matches as Kyle Terry defeated the Pride’s #8 juniorCharles Griffin 7-4. Oklahoma senior Matt Storniolo, rankedsecond, downed red-shirt freshman Mitch Smith, ranked 15th, 6-4 at 149. In one of the featured matches of the night sophomoreWill Rowe edged #2 senior James Strouse 6-5 at 157 pounds fora 15-3 advantage in the match.

Sixth-ranked senior Mike Patrovich ended OU’s run with a 6-3decision over Sooner Shane Seibert, 6-3,at 165. Hofstrasophomore Alton Lucas closed the gap to 15-9 with a 7-4decision over Josh Weitzel at 174 pounds while junior JoeRovelli inched closer with 12-0 major decision over Josh Hintonat 184 pounds. Oklahoma’s fifth-ranked senior Joel Flaggertposted a 4-2 decision over Hofstra’s 11th-ranked senior ChrisWeidman 4-2. Sooner Brad Farmer closed out the match with a5-0 victory over Pride graduate-student Matt Pollock at 285pounds for a 21-13 victory.

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 vs. Rider: The eighth-rankedHofstra Pride lost just one match on the mat as they extendedtheir conference undefeated streak to 54 matches, including 51straight victories, with a 29-9 Colonial Athletic Association winover Rider at the Mack Sports Complex. The Pride improved to

18-3-2 overall and 7-0 in conference action. The Broncs ofRider fall to 9-8 and 3-3 in the CAA.

Opening the match at 285, Hofstra graduate student MattPollock (12-21) had a big second period, building a 6-0 lead, onthe way to an 11-0 major decision over Nick Ciufo. The Prideforfeited 125 to Tommy Lorenzo (11-19) as Hofstra juniorcontinues to recover from an injury sustained on January 28.The Pride regained the lead at 8-6 at 133 pounds as 17th-rankedfreshman Lou Ruggirello (27-7) rolled to a 12-0 major decisionover Brian Polashuk (4-5).

Eighth-ranked junior Charles Griffin (25-4) posted an escape,takedown and received the riding time point in the third periodto break a 4-4 tie and post an 8-4 victory over Don Fisch (24-8)at 141. At 149, Hofstra’s red-shirt freshman Mitch Smith (7-3),ranked first in the CAA and 14th in the country, battled Rider’sMike Kessler (17-10), ranked second in the conference, to ascoreless draw through two periods. But late in the third period,Kessler posted a reversal and two back points to record a 4-2victory. At 157 pounds, Hofstra second-ranked senior JamesStrouse (33-2) cruised to his 18th consecutive victory with a 10-1 major decision over Nathan Galloway (5-3) to boost the matchlead to 15-9.

Pride senior Mike Patrovich (13-4), ranked first in the CAA andsixth in the country, posted a 21-6 tech fall over Rob Morrison(7-14) at 165. It was Patrovich’s fourth consecutive victory. In abattle of top 20 wrestlers, Hofstra’s ninth-ranked sophomoreAlton Lucas (20-8) posted a 3-2 decision over #14 DougUmbehauer (22-10) at 174 pounds for a 23-9 advantage in thecontest. Pride junior Joe Rovelli (27-5) then blanked MikeMiller (20-12) at 184 pounds before Hofstra senior ChrisWeidman (24-6), ranked 11th, notched a 9-3 win over T.J.Morrison (24-8) at 197 to close out the contest.

Opening up at 174 pounds, Hofstra sophomore Alton Lucas (19-8), ranked 14th, took a 3-1 lead in the second period and held onfor a 3-2 victory to give the Pride a 3-0 lead. Pride junior JoeRovelli (26-5), ranked seventh, was upset by unranked seniorLuke Hogle (8-9) 12-4. After trailing 2-1 after one period, Hogletallied a near-fall and a takedown in the second to take a 6-3lead into the third period. A reversal, near-fall and a takedown inthe third sealed the victory for Hogle. Cornell's fourth-rankedsenior Jerry Rinaldi (14-2) took a 3-0 lead into the third periodon the way to a 4-2 victory over Hofstra's 11th-ranked seniorChris Weidman (23-6) to boost the lead to 7-3. In theheavyweight match, Cornell junior Zach Hammond (18-7)tallied a takedown with 12 seconds remaining in sudden-victoryto post a 3-1 win over Pride graduate-student Matt Pollock (11-21). At 125, Cornell's second-ranked sophomore Troy Nickersonwon by forfeit to boost the Big Red lead to 16-3. In a battle ofyoung stars at 133, third-ranked sophomore Adam Frey (11-1)recorded a reversal with nine seconds remaining to post a 7-5victory over 19th-ranked freshman Lou Ruggirello (26-7) and a19-3 advantage in the match.

But Hofstra rallied as seventh-ranked junior Charles Griffin (24-4) pinned Cornell senior Matt Easter (2-3) in 4:18 at 141 to cut

Sunday, January 28, 2007 vs. #24 Lehigh: Sixth-rankedHofstra captured nine of 10 matches, including a win by fall byred-shirt freshman Mitch Smith at 149, to post a 30-6 victoryover #24 Lehigh at the New York Athletic Club. The Pride, whotallied their seventh consecutive victory, improved to 17-2-2while the Mountain Hawks, who had their four-match winningstreak stopped, fall to 11-7.

Hofstra's 18th-ranked junior Dave Tomasette (14-5) opened thenight's festivities with a 6-5 victory over Lehigh sophomoreMatt Fisk. After trailing 4-1 after one period, Fisk tied the matchat 5-5 with an escape with 1:15 remaining in the third. ButTomasette recorded the riding time point to post the victory. At133, Hofstra freshman Lou Ruggirello (26-6), ranked 18th,battled freshman Seth Ciasulli and posted a first periodtakedown and an escape in the third for a 3-1 victory. ThePride's seventh-ranked junior Charles Griffin (23-4) battled backfrom a 5-2 deficit at the end of the first period to post a 7-6victory, on the riding time point, over Lehigh senior MattCiasulli at 141 pounds.

At 149, Hofstra 19th-ranked red-shirt freshman Mitch Smith (7-1) returned to action for the first time since December with awin by fall over junior Jeff Santo in 3:39. Pride senior JamesStrouse (31-2), ranked second in the country at 157, posted his16th consecutive victory with a 5-0 blanking of senior DaveNakasome. At 165, Hofstra's sixth-ranked senior Mike Patrovich(11-4) rolled to a 10-4 victory over freshman Manuel Schubert.Patrovich opened up a 6-3 lead after two periods and cruised tohis 97th career victory.

Hofstra's 17th-ranked sophomore Alton Lucas (18-8) posted a 4-2 decision over senior David Helfrich for a 24-0 lead in thecontest. Pride junior Joe Rovelli (26-4) , ranked seventh at 184,recorded his tenth consecutive victory with a 7-0 blanking ofLehigh's 19th-ranked freshman David Craig. After a scorelessfirst period, Rovelli posted a takedown and two near-fall to takea 6-0 lead.

Chris Weidman (23-5), Hofstra's 11th-ranked senior, tallied an8-1 victory over senior Matt Cassidy to boost the Pride lead to30-0 in the contest. The Mountain Hawks avoided the shutout inthe final match of the night when 17th-ranked senior PaulWeibel pinned Pride graduate-student Matt Pollock (11-20) in2:16.

Friday, January 26, 2007 at #14 Penn: The Pride capturednine of ten matches, including a win by fall by junior CharlesGriffin at 141, as sixth-ranked Hofstra cruised by #14 Penn, 31-3, at the Palestra.

The Pride won the first four matches of the night and nearlymade it a clean sweep. Hofstra junior Joe Rovelli (25-4), ranked

seventh at 184 pounds, opened the night with a 9-4 victory overPenn's 13th-ranked junior Lior Zamir for a 3-0 lead. Pride seniorChris Weidman, who fell out of the top 10 at 197 pounds thisweek and is now 11th, improved to 22-5 on the season with a20-8 major decision over Jack Sullivan. Graduate student MattPollock (11-19) posted a 7-3 victory over sophomore BenReiter. In a battle of top 20 wrestlers, Hofstra junior DaveTomasette (13-5), ranked 18th, pulled a reversal in the thirdperiod to post a 2-0 win over #11 Matt Eveleth, 2-0, to give thePride a 13-0 lead in the contest.

At 133 pounds, Hofstra freshman Lou Ruggirello (25-6) provedhe will be a national contender in March when he took second-ranked and defending national champion, senior Matt Valenti(15-2) to the second tie-breaker before falling 10-4. But thatvictory would be the only one the Quakers would get as Pridejunior Charles Griffin (22-4), ranked seventh, posted his 12thwin in 13 matches and tallied his second fall victory with a pinof Brett McCurdy in 4:45. Hofstra senior Mike Parziale (12-9)boosted the lead to 22-3 with a 9-3 victory over Rick Rappo.

Hofstra's second-ranked senior James Strouse posted his career-best 30th victory of the season, against two losses, with a 7-2victory over #14 Matt Dragon at 157. Returning All-American,senior Mike Patrovich (10-4), ranked sixth at 165, posted a thirdperiod escape and got the riding time point to down #17 ZackShanaman 5-3. Pride sophomore Alton Lucas (17-8), ranked17th, posted his fourth win in the last five outings with a 5-3victory over eighth-ranked senior Matt Herrington to close outthe match.

Saturday, January 20, 2007 at CAA Duals: The sixth-rankedHofstra wrestling team downed James Madison, George Masonand Drexel Saturday to sweep the two-day Colonial AthleticAssociation Duals at the George Mason Field House. The Pride(14-2-3), who posted victories over Old Dominion andBinghamton on day one, recorded a perfect 5-0 record in thisyear's CAA Duals and in the process boosted their conferencematch undefeated streak to 53 including 50 consecutive wins.

In the day two opener against the Dukes of James Madison, thePride captured eight of the 10 matches, including tech falls byjunior Dave Tomasette (10-5) at 125, senior John Manarte (2-3)at 149, and senior James Strouse (27-2) at 157, to cruise to a 34-12 victory. Hofstra won the first five matches in the contest,building a 21-0 lead, before James Madison came back with aforfeit win and a win by fall by Ivan Lagares to close the deficitto 21-12. But Pride junior Joe Rovelli (22-4) won by forfeit at184, senior Chris Weidman (19-5) posted a major decision at197, and graduate-student Matt Pollock (10-17) tallied a 1-0victory over Zack Winfrey to close out the match.

The Pride's second match against host George Mason was moreof the same as Hofstra won eight of the 10 matches, includingwins by fall by freshman Lou Ruggirello and senior ChrisWeidman, to record a 34-9 victory over the Patriots. The Pridecaptured the first five matches to take a 20-0 lead before GeorgeMason put some points on the scoreboard by way of a Hofstraforfeit at 165. The Pride's final match of the CAA Duals proved to be theirtoughest, The Drexel Dragons battled Hofstra before dropping a26-15 decision. Pride junior Dave Tomasette (12-5) posted hisfifth victory of the CAA Duals with a 10-3 decision over SteveMytech at 125. Freshman Lou Ruggirello (25-5) also posted hisfifth win of the Duals with a pin of William Martin in 1:15 at133 to boost the Pride lead to 9-0. Junior Charles Griffin (21-4)then tallied a tech fall (16-1) over Morgan Remillard. Drexelsenior Mark Cartella cut the deficit to 14-3 with a 6-1 decisionover John Manarte (3-4). But Pride senior James Strouse (29-2)took the points right back with a 7-5 decision over RyanHluschak at 157. Billy Haydt took a forfeit win at 165 and NickKozar recorded a 5-3 upset victory over Alton Lucas (16-8) insudden victory to close the deficit to 17-12. But Hofstra juniorJoe Rovelli (24-4) at 184, and senior Chris Weidman (21-5) at197 tallied a tech fall and a major decision, respectively, to putthe match out of reach. Friday, January 19, 2007 at CAA Duals: Hofstra capturedseven of 10 matches, including a tech fall by Dave Tomasette at125 pounds, to post a 23-12 CAA victory over the Monarchs ofOld Dominion in the first round of the Colonial AthleticAssociation Duals at George Mason University. The Prideimprove to 10-2-3 on the season and boosts their conferencematch undefeated streak to 49 matches (48-0-1) and theirconference match winning streak to 46.

Tomasette (8-5), the 19th-ranked junior and top-ranked CAAwrestler at 125, started the Pride off on the right foot with a 17-1tech fall in 4:48 over Kyle Hutter to give Hofstra a 5-0 lead.Freshman Lou Ruggirello (21-5), ranked 17th this week, boostedthe lead to 8-0 with a 4-3 decision over Christian Staylor.Seventh-ranked junior Charles Griffin (19-4) made it threestraight with a 5-0 decision over Ryan Williams.

Old Dominion (6-4) got on the board as Kaylen Baxter downedsenior John Manarte (1-2), who was making his 2006-07 dualmatch debut, 4-2 at 149, to cut the deficit to 11-3. But Hofstra'ssecond-ranked senior James Strouse (25-2) tallied a 10-1 majordecision over Chris Brown at 157 for his tenth consecutivevictory. With Hofstra's sixth-ranked senior out with an injury,Hofstra forfeited the 165 pound match to ODU's Nick Pullano topull the Monarchs within six at 15-9.

But Hofstra won the next three matches to put the contest away.Pride sophomore Alton Lucas (14-7), ranked 13th in the countryat 174, downed Derek Coffey 9-2. In a battled between the toptwo ranked wrestlers in the CAA at 184, Hofstra junior JoeRovelli (20-4), ranked seventh, defeated Jesse Strawn 6-2. Pridesenior Chris Weidman (17-5) boosted the Hofstra lead to 24-9with a 9-3 victory over David Mendoza at 197. ODU's MattPellar closed out the match with a 3-1 decision over MattPollock.

In the nightcap, Lou Ruggirello recorded a win by fall and DaveTomasette, Joe Rovelli and Chris Weidman posted tech fallvictories to lead the sixth-ranked Pride to a 31-12 victory overBinghamton University in the second round of the CAA Duals atGeorge Mason University. The victory, which boosts the Pride's

record to 11-2-3 on the year and 3-0 in the CAA, is alsoHofstra's 50th without a loss (49-0-1) in conference competitionand 47th consecutive conference victory.

Tomasette (9-5) posted his second straight tech fall in the CAADuals with an 18-2 decision over Mike Kleeman in the opener.It was Tomasette's fourth tech fall of the year. Freshman LouRuggirello (22-5) tallied his fifth fall of the year with a 51second pin of Corey Sullivan. Junior Charles Griffin (20-4)posted his 20th win of the year with a 10-4 decision overKareem Naguib at 141 to give the Pride a 14-0 lead in thematch.

Kyle Fried defeated Hofstra senior John Manarte (1-3), 4-0, at149 to put the Bearcats on the board. Pride senior James Strouse(26-2) posted his 11th consecutive victory with a 9-1 majordecision over Nate Patterson at 157. Sam Sirota took a forfeitvictory at 165 for Binghamton to cut the lead to 18-9.

But like their first match in the CAA Duals earlier Friday night,Alton Lucas, Joe Rovelli and Chris Weidman posted victories tocruise to the match victory. Lucas (15-7) tallied a 5-2 victoryover Josh Patterson, junior Joe Rovelli (21-4) tallied a 16-0 techfall victory at the end of the first period over Corey Waite, andChris Weidman (18-5) posted his third tech fall victory of theseason with a 21-5 victory in 1:46 for a 31-9 lead in the match.

Binghamton's Michael Patterson closed out the match with a 2-1 decision over Matt Pollock (9-17).

Sunday, January 14, 2007 vs. #5 Iowa: Hofstra wrestlersposted victories in three of ten matches as fifth-ranked Iowaposted a 26-10 victory over the third-ranked Pride to capturefifth place at the 2007 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at theUNI-Dome.

The Pride, who posted a 2-2-1 record in the two-day event,placed sixth in the Duals which were won by Minnesota.Current top-ranked Missouri placed second followed by IowaState and Oklahoma State. In Sunday's fifth place match, Iowacaptured the first four matches, building a 14-0 lead. At 125,sophomore Charlie Falck posted a major decision victory overPride junior Dave Tomasette 11-2. Senior Mario Galanakis,ranked 14th, downed Hofstra's 19th-ranked freshman LouRuggirello 11-1. In a battle of top 10 wrestlers at 141, Iowajunior Alex Tsirtsis, ranked eighth, edged Charles Griffin,ranked ninth, 12-11. At 149, Iowa senior Alex Grunder posted a7-2 decision over Hofstra senior Mike Parziale.

The Pride got on the scoreboard at 157 as fourth-ranked seniorJames Strouse, who posted a 5-0 mark in the five matchesduring the Duals, recorded an 8-0 major decision over #13 RyanMorningstar. The Pride forfeited 165 as senior Mike Patrovichwas injured in an earlier round and sat out the finale giving theHawkeyes a 20-4 lead. At 174, Iowa's second-ranked senior EricLuedke edged 13th-ranked Alton Lucas 4-1. Pride junior JoeRovelli, ranked sixth, posted a 7-6 decision over freshmanPhillip Keddy at 184. January 13, 2007 vs. #9 Central Michigan: When it comes toninth-ranked Central Michigan, Hofstra is fit to be tied. For thesecond time in a week, Hofstra and Central Michigan battled toa 16-16 tie in the consolation bracket third round of the

CMU senior Tyler Grayson put the Chippewas on thescoreboard with an 8-3 decision over Mike Parziale (11-8) at149 to cut the deficit to 10-3. But Hofstra's fourth-ranked seniorJames Strouse (23-2) posted his fourth win of the Duals with a10-5 victory over senior Andy Keller at 157. Sophomore TrevorStewart started CMU on their way back with a 6-3 decision overfifth-ranked Mike Patrovich on a near-fall in the final seconds ofthe 165-pound match. It was Patrovich's third straight loss-all inthe final seconds-of the Duals. Senior Brandon Sinnott, rankedfifth, closed the deficit to 13-9 with a 6-3 decision over AltonLucas (13-6) at 174.

Hofstra junior Joe Rovelli (18-4) gave the Pride some breathingroom with a 9-6 decision over Christian Sinnott at 184 before10th-ranked Wynn Michalak, for the second time in a week,edged fourth-ranked Chris Weidman, 4-3. Trailing 16-12 andneeding a major decision to tie or a tech fall or fall to win,CMU's fifth-ranked senior Bubba Gritter came up with a 10-1major decision over Matt Pollock to send the contest into the tie-breaker. Going down the list of criteria, Hofstra broke the tiewith an 8-5 advantage in near-fall points.

Saturday, January 13, 2007 vs. Northern Iowa: The Prideposted victories in seven of the 10 matches to advance to thethird round of the consolations with a 25-9 victory over the hostPanthers of the University of Northern Iowa at the NWCA/CliffKeen National Duals at the UNI-Dome. Hofstra improved to 9-1-2 on the season while Northern Iowa (1-7) was eliminatedfrom the competition.

Hofstra captured the first three match-ups, and four of the firstfive to take a commanding 12-3 lead midway through thecontest. Hofstra junior Dave Tomasette (6-4) opened the matchwith a 9-3 victory over freshman Grant Rage at 125. Pridefreshman Lou Ruggirello (19-4) posted his third straight win inthe Duals with a 9-6 decision over freshman Kyle Anson.Charles Griffin (17-3) also posted his third consecutive win inthe Duals with a 4-2 decision over 10th-ranked C.J. Ettelson at141 to give the Pride a 9-0 lead in the contest.

UNI senior Ryan Osgood put the Panthers on the board with 7-5decision in sudden victory over Mike Parziale (11-7) at 149. Saturday, January 13, 2007 vs. #6 Iowa State: Hofstra'sfourth-ranked senior James Strouse upset #2 Trent Paulson at157 pounds but the Cyclones captured seven of the 10 matchesas #6 Iowa State gave the Pride their first loss of the season in a24-9 decision in the quarterfinals of the NWCA/Cliff KeenNational Duals at the UNI-Dome.

Strouse's 3-1 decision over Paulson was the Pride's third victoryin the first five matches and gave Hofstra (8-1-2) a 9-6 lead inthe contest. But Iowa State (5-2) would win the last fivematches, including upsets at 174, 184 and 197, to post thevictory. Cyclone red-shirt freshman Nick Fanthorpe, ranked20th, gave ISU the early lead with a 13-9 upset of Hofstra'sfifth-rankes Dave Tomasette (5-4) at 125. Pride freshman LouRuggirello (18-4), ranked 19th, put Hofstra on the board with ahard-fought 2-1 victory over ISU freshman Nick Gallick at 133.Charles Griffin (16-3), ranked ninth, gave the Pride a 6-3 leadwith a 16-11 win over 11th-ranked freshman Mitch Mueller at141.

Another ISU freshman, Cyler Sanderson, ranked 14th, tied thematch with an 8-2 victory over Mike Parziale at 149 poundsbefore Strouse posted his 21st victory of the season in 23outings to give the Pride their last lead of the contest. At 165,second-ranked Cyclone Travis Paulson avenged his brother'sloss with a 6-4 victory over fifth-ranked Mike Patrovich (9-2) ona takedown in the final seconds of the contest. In a battle of top 10 ranked wrestlers at 184, ninth-rankedfreshman Jake Varner upset Hofstra's sixth-ranked junior JoeRovelli (16-4) 6-1. Sunday, January 7, 2007 at #9 Central Michigan: The third-ranked Pride Wrestling team won five of the first six matches,including a victory by fall by Mike Patrovich, but ninth-rankedCentral Michigan rallied to win the last four bouts to post an 18-18 tie at the Rose Arena. The Pride, who fell behind 15-3 afterfive matches Saturday, turned the tables Sunday against CentralMichigan. Starting out at 125, Hofstra’s fifth-ranked junior DaveTomasette jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period on theway to a 7-4 victory over #15 Luke Smith. Hofstra freshmanLou Ruggirello, ranked 19th, also had a big first period, buildinga 5-1 lead on the way to a 7-3 victory over Conor Beebe at 133.Hofstra junior Charles Griffin, also ranked 19th, made it three-in-a-row for the Pride with a 7-2 victory over #13 Eric Kruger.

The Chippewas got on the board at 149 as Brandon Carter rolledto an 8-2 victory over Hofstra senior Mike Parziale to close thedeficit to 9-3. But the Pride bounced back with an 8-2 victory byfourth-ranked senior James Strouse over Steve Brown at 157,and a win by fall in 2:12 by Mike Patrovich over Mike Millerfor a 18-3 lead.

But Central Michigan came roaring back behind the Sinnotttwins, Brandon at 174 and Christian at 184, to start a run of fourstraight wins to tie the match. At184, #6 Christian Sinnott won by tech fall 20-3 over Hofstrafreshman Rich Muzikar to close the deficit to 18-11. In a battleof top five wrestlers at 197, Central’s Wynn Michalak, rankedeighth, posted a last minute takedown and a near-fall to down #3Chris Weidman 8-4. The match came down to the heavyweightclass with the Chippewas needing a major decision to tie andtech fall or pin to win. Central’s Bubba Gritter, who is rankedseventh in the country, faced Hofstra graduate-student MattPollock. The two battled with Gritter taking a 4-1 lead into thethird before Gritter posted a 10-2 major decision.

Saturday, January 6, 2007 at #11 Michigan: After droppingfour of the first five matches, Hofstra senior James Strouse’s 6-3victory over Jeff Marsh in the final match of the night capped afurious comeback and gave the third-ranked Hofstra Pride an18-18 tie with the 11th-ranked Wolverines of Michigan at CliffKeen Arena. In a contest that featured three top 20 match-ups,the Wolverines jumped to the early 15-3 lead after five matches.In the opening match at 165, Michigan’s 5th-ranked senior EricTannenbaum edged Hofstra’s 4th-ranked senior Mike Patrovich3-1. Tannenbaum had a takedown in the first and an escape inthe second and held off Patrovich for the victory. At 174, UM’s8th-ranked junior Steve Luke recorded two escapes to post a 2-0win over Hofstra’s 12th-ranked sophomore Alton Lucas. AfterMichigan’s 4th-ranked Tyrel Todd pinned Hofstra freshmanRich Muzikar in 1:48 at 184 pounds for a 12-0 lead, Pride seniorChris Weidman, ranked third, put Hofstra on the board with a 9-

8 victory on the riding time point at 197. Michigan senior OmarMaktabi boosted the Wolverine lead to 15-3 at the halftime witha 3-1 sudden death victory on a takedown 34 seconds into theextra period.

But the Pride rallied, winning the next three match-ups to tie thematch. At 125, junior Dave Tomasette, ranked fifth, recorded afive point tech fall over James Shaheen 16-0. Hofstra’s 19th-ranked freshman Lou Ruggirello did his part with a 7-4 victoryover Chris Diehl at 133 pounds. Then, junior Charles Griffintied the match with a 12-1 major decision over JustinChrzanowski.

With two bouts remaining, Michigan took the lead at 149pounds as third ranked Josh Churella battled Pride senior MikeParziale before posting a 6-1 win. In the finale, Hofstra seniorJames Strouse had to post at least a decision to tie the match,and tallied a 6-3 victory over Jeff Marsh.

The Pride, who wrestled without red-shirt freshman Mitch Smithat 149, who stayed home with an injury, and junior Joe Rovelli,who was left home by coaches decision, head further north inthe Great Lakes State on Sunday when they face #9 CentralMichigan in Mt. Pleasant, MI at 2 p.m.

Sunday, December 10, 2006 vs. #8 Penn State: The fifth-ranked Pride won the first five matches of the contest, includingvictories by Chris Weidman and Alton Lucas over the numberone and two-ranked wrestlers in their class, respectively, asHofstra posted a 24-10 victory over #8 Penn State at the MackSports Complex. Starting the match at 157 pounds, Hofstra’seighth-ranked senior James Strouse (17-2) bounced back from a5-3 first period deficit to post a 10-6 victory over PSU seniorNathan Galloway. Pride senior All-American Mike Patrovich (7-0), ranked third, overwhelmed sophomore Jason Lapham by techfall, 18-2, at 165 pounds for a 8-0 lead.

At 174 pounds, Hofstra sophomore Alton Lucas, who crackedthe top 20 rankings for the first time this week with a number 17placement, posted a takedown with 53 seconds remaining in thethird period to break a 1-1 tie and give him a 3-2 victory oversecond-ranked senior James Yonushonis. Lucas improved to 11-2 on the season. Pride junior Joe Rovelli, ranked seventh at 184,kept the momentum going with a 13-6 victory over sophomorePhil Bomberger. Rovelli (15-3) was down 5-0 to open the matchbut rallied to close the deficit to 5-4 at the end of the first periodand then posted two near-falls in the second to build an 11-4lead.

Hofstra senior All-American Chris Weidman, ranked sixth at197 pounds, posted his second victory over a number one rankedwrestler in nine months with a 5-4 victory over junior Phil Davison the riding time point. Weidman (13-1) entered the thirdperiod down 3-2 but posted a reversal to take a 4-3 lead. Davispicked up a point on a stall call after the Pride senior pulledDavis out of bounds. But Weidman had accumulated 2:14 inriding time for the win and a 17-0 lead at halftime.

Following the break, Penn State came back to post three straightvictories to climb back into the match. Penn State’s 12th-rankedsenior Aaron Anspach posted a major decision over Pridegraduate student Matt Pollock (8-9) 17-6 at 285. In a battle oftop 10-ranked juniors, PSU’s #3 Mark McKnight edged #8 DaveTomasette (3-2), 5-2, at 125 pounds, and #7 Jake Strayerblanked Hofstra’s 20th-ranked freshman Lou Ruggirello (14-4),6-0 at 133, to close the gap to 17-10.

Hofstra freshman Lou Ruggirello boostedthe Pride lead to 6-0 with a 5-3 victory over freshman MikeThorn at 133. Minnesota's 10th-ranked junior Manny Rivera putthe Golden Gophers on the board with a 5-1 victory over Pridejunior Charles Griffin. Minnesota took its first lead of the match,at 8-6 when sophomore Dustin Schlatter, the top-ranked wrestlerat 149 pounds, downed Pride senior Mike Parziale by tech fall17-0. But the Pride rallied back with three straight victories assenior James Strouse posted a 4-2 victory at 157 pounds oversixth-ranked junior C.P. Schlatter in the second sudden victoryperiod.
