Welcome to our brand new Journey magazine, with a fresh new look to carry us into autumn. This month it’s all about Alaska. The cruise season runs between May and September, but these dramatic sailings are so popular that they typically sell out up to nine months in advance. Balconies are always the first to go, so if you want to enjoy the natural landscapes from your cabin, now is the time to book for 2015.

We’ve packed in adventures across the world, with some exciting new highlights. Check out our fantastic new ‘Cambodia Adventures with Singapore Delights’ (p.27); this is already proving to be a best seller, with an amazing tour of Angkor Wat.

It’s said that you have not truly experienced Australia until you have visited Ayers Rock, so we’ve taken that onboard with our new ultimate Australia package with a three day Uluru tour (p.34). What better way to experience the land down under.

From classic winter sun to once-in-a-lifetime voyages, we’ve got it covered. It’s time to get inspired…

Alaska

Why Alaska? “One of the great things about Alaska is the fantastic range of things to do. When you are not exploring the ship or capturing the awe-inspiring views that pass, you will have the opportunity to choose from a large range of shore excursions that allow you to delve into this curious land even further.

Alaska gives you the opportunity to surround yourself with natures finest. Home to ten national parks you will be able to see unique wildlife in their natural habitat, soaring mountains and lakes that ooze a crisp aroma. Denali National Park and Glacier Bay National Park are among the most popular. From helicopter rides, to whale watching and forest ziplines there is something for everyone. Whether you prefer to explore in a relaxed style or don your adventurous hat, Alaska has it all.”

FOCUS ON:

THE INSIDE PASSAGE A place that time forgot

Enter a parallel universe, where nature is untouched and unmatched. This is a superlative environment: bigger, bolder and more beautiful than anything you’ve seen.

The Inside Passage has been shaped by the staggering force of nature, over the course of millions of years. Huge glaciers have carved the way for deep blue fjords filled with icy indigo waters, home to some of the most spectacular wildlife in the world. This network of winding passages weaves its way from south eastern Alaska, through British Columbia, to the State of Washington.

As you cruise the Inside Passage, you are protected from the elements of the open ocean, and have access to the most remote parts of Alaska. On a typical itinerary, you’ll spend a few days sailing this dramatic route as you make your way to ports nestled inside.

There’s nothing more breathtaking than passing through snow-topped mountain ranges with immense forests as far as the eye can see; picture ice shelves crashing into the fjords below and plunging waterfalls up close.

The Alaska cruise season runs from May to September; in the spring you’ll be treated to whale migrations and a dusting of wild flowers lining the Inside Passage. And as autumn approaches, the rusty colours of drying leaves alight the woodland with beauty. The Inside Passage epitomises a trip to Alaska for most travellers. The spectacle of the landscape is constantly changing, from narrow waterways to wide open bays.

Now is the time to book to ensure you don’t miss the cruise of a lifetime. This is truly a voyage into the wild.

Nature under your nose

Gaze out from the top deck and let the spectacular nature and wildlife come to you. This is the most relaxing way to experience the sights and sounds of the mountains and fjords. Just look over the side of the ship and you could see humpback whales, orcas and seals, or look ashore and spot grizzly bears, moose and bald-headed eagles.

A different perspective

As you look around you on board an Alaska cruise, you’ll realise your unique position. Sailing along an icy blue fjord with snow-capped mountains rising around you on all sides, you can see the natural wonders from an angle that you just can’t replicate from the shore. This is the way the locals experience the region; up close and personal.

Comfort and convenience

Organising a big trip can be stressful; you’ve got to schedule, budget and research. So there’s a lot to be said for having it all planned out. Travelling to this once-in-a-lifetime destination, it could take you months to thoroughly explore under your own steam. Choose to cruise and the highlights are conveniently mapped out; you won’t miss a thing.

A true bucket list destination, Alaska has risen to be one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world in recent years. Here’s why the view from a cruise ship is the ultimate way to experience this icy wilderness.

Off the beaten track

This area of the world is visited by hordes of people each year, yet you’ll feel like you’ve got the place to yourselves at times (forgetting your fellow cruisers, of course). With sailing routes delving deep into the Inside Passage, past glaciers, waterfalls and through winding fjords, you’ll get to visit the unspoilt and uncrowded Alaska.

Value for money

With so much included in the cost of your cruise, you can visit this premium destination for amazing value. Your flights, accommodation, meals and entertainment are all thrown in. Plus, some premium cruise lines include drinks packages, gratuities and a whole host of spectacular excursions. You’ll save a huge amount compared to a land –based trip.

FOCUS ON:

MACHU PICCHU The ancient Incan city

The mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu are a beacon for travel lovers the world over. Topping the popularity polls of South American tourist attractions, the scale and magnificence of this site is hard to beat.

Perched on a mountain high up in the Andes, this Incan citadel was left abandoned and untouched for centuries, before it’s rediscovery in 1911 by historians. Since then, it has been uncovered and preserved to unveil one of the most enchanting and mysterious towns in history.

Tours to this UNESCO World Heritage Site often begin in Cuzco. This small town in south-eastern Peru at the foothills of the Andes is known as the gateway to Machu Picchu, with a scenic train ride providing access to the Citadel.

Alternatively, for those seeking a more active adventure, a hiking trip along the Inca Trail carries you 33km along the Sacred Valley to the summit.

Fascinating architecture and history combine with a picturesque mountain location, creating an attraction to explore for hours. Wander the steep stone steps winding all over the settlement, examine hand-carved stones interlocking like jigsaws, and watch as llama’s graze the lush green terraces.

You’re really up in the clouds at almost 2,500 metres above sea level. Right in the heart of a humid subtropical jungle, you may witness hypnotising mist lingering around the mountains. And if you’re in luck, the haze will clear to reveal the most breathtaking views you’ve ever seen.

Your incredible tours start here…Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu Land tour

Close to the Inca capital of Cuzco, The Sacred Valley of the Incas sits in the foothills of the Andes. Your tour begins here at a South American camelid farm.Travel on to the Peruvian village of Pisac to potter around the plentiful stalls of locally produced crafts. Discover trinkets, carvings, replicas and old Inca pieces in this lively flea market.

Return to the cobbled streets of Cuzco to your hotel, then await pick up in the morning for your Machu Picchu tour. From Ollanta station, take a train ride to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. This is the last stop before entering the remains of the most important archaeological site in Peru. A short transfer will deliver you in Machu Picchu itself, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

This is undeniably one of the must-see sights of South America; its awe-inspiring location on an isolated mountaintop looks out over the picturesque valleys below, with perfectly cut stone walls, farming terraces and ancient relics.

Your second day at Machu Picchu* allows you to further explore any of the attractions of the citadel that you wish. In the afternoon head to the train station of Aguas Calientes and from there take the train back to the Ollanta station. A vehicle will be waiting for you at the train station of Ollantaytambo to transfer you to your hotel in Cuzco.

Santiago City Tour A vibrant, modern metropolis is paired with the old-world charm of a former colonial capital in Santiago; this private tour will introduce you to both sides of the Chilean capital. Beginning with a tour of the city centre, you’ll see the presidential palace, the always-bustling Plaza de Armas, the extraordinary cathedral, the Palacio de la Real Audiencia and the Casa Colonial.

You’ll travel west towards the soaring Andes, past the Cerro San Cristóbal, an outpost of the mountains which towers over the city with a great white statue of the Virgin Mary crowning its summit. Your tour will conclude with a visit to the fashionable business districts of Providencia and Las Condes, with their broad boulevards lined with fine restaurants and trendy boutiques. This half-day excursion forms the perfect initiation to the charms of one of South America’s most exciting cities.

Buenos Aires Dinner & Tango Show

Buenos Aires nightlife buzzes with a Latin American fever that never sleeps. Experience a flavor of the atmospheric entertainment on offer during this inclusive evening. You’ll have the chance to attend an unforgettable tango show performed by the best dancers and singers of the region, while enjoying a delicious meal. This is the perfect way to experience the essence of Buenos Aires, the city of tango.

“Machu Picchu is one of our best-selling cruise tours; when you’re travelling all that way, you’ve got to make the most of your holiday. This is an unmissable addition to your South American exploration.” Nadine Dawson, Product Manager So

Caribbean

Why Caribbean? “It’s hard not to be drawn to this radiant part of the world and everything it has to offer. Bringing postcard images to life, the Caribbean is home to over 700 islands nestled in the charming Caribbean Sea. Until you see the enticing beaches of the Caribbean for yourself you will not believe how immaculate they are.

Well-known for the traditional cuisine, you will not have to go far for a freshly prepared fish dish or some jerk chicken with rice. Everywhere you turn is a local serving up their signature tastes. Using fresh ingredients, spices and sauces, the taste of the Caribbean is just as heavenly as its sights.

Defining the word paradise, take a cruise to the Caribbean if you want to explore a place that will excite every one of your senses and provide the ultimate escape.”

FOCUS ON:

BARBADOS A taste of island life

Endless stretches of achingly white sands are what Barbados is best known, and loved, for. But it’s what lies beyond the beach that allows Barbados to run rings around many other islands.

A distinctly ‘British’ vibe permeates across the island, blending both the familiar and the exotic; this is a place where afternoon tea is a ritual and cricket is cherished. Yet, the sounds of Calypso rhythms and tropical wildlife make the experience a whole lot more glamourous.

A colonial past has sculpted a rich history to be discovered; visit the vast plantations, museums and sample the local rums. Burrowing inland, you’ll find lush vegetation interspersed with spectacular waterfalls.

Look out for monkeys swinging between the trees and the echoing sound of whistling frogs once the sun has set.

There’s so much to keep you busy: make a trip to a local rum distillery and the idyllic Turtle Bay.

And once you’ve experienced the art, history, fresh local cuisine and night life of this sophisticated paradise, you can return to the beaches to rejuvenate. Swaying palm trees provide the perfect resting spot beside crystal-clear waters.

For the adventurous, an aquatic playground of kayaking, snorkelling and surfing awaits in the cooling turquoise sea. Try your hand at a new sport or simply bathe in the idyllic waters.

A year-round destination boasting a hot tropical climate, Barbados is a winter sun seeker’s dream; cruise from December to May to escape the rainy British blues, and pick up the dry season in Barbados instead.

FOCUS ON:

MALAYSIA A true taste of Asia

A blend of many Asian cultures, Malaysia’s rich offerings are a diverse mix; from the wild jungle tribes of Borneo to the space-age skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur.

Often overlooked in the past among its more famous neighbours, Malaysia is now finding its feet as a hot spot in the Far East. If you’re cruising to South East Asia, you’ll do well to miss the historic capital, with many cruises stopping here and incorporating pre or post-cruise stays.

A city that infuses modern style with traditional charm, you may wonder what sets it apart from other Asian capitals. Less bustling than Bangkok and more diverse than Tokyo, this is a city with many similarities to Singapore. Sprawling shopping malls are filled with both high-end and cheap local treasures.

Never-ending street food stalls radiate genuine aromas of Asia; the cuisine draws influence from across South East Asia, India and China to make for a vibrant discovery. Until you’re sampling the local cuisine from a stall on the street, you haven’t experienced Asia.

Take a trip up the iconic Petronas Towers and admire the colonial city from above, or choose the Kuala Lumpur Tower for a drink in the revolving restaurant at the top. The views from up here will take your breath away; look down on the Forest Reserve, a micro-sized rainforest in the heart of the city, where the lush green spaces are interspersed between the skyscrapers.

With sacred Hindu shrines and magnificent mosques dotted between the modernist architecture, you’ll soon see that Kuala Lumpur’s charm is in its multi-cultural mix.

Kuala Lumpur is distinctly traditional, with space-age skyscrapers that brush the skyline. Beginning with a hotel stay here, you’ll discover the unique beauty of Malaysian Capital. Then embark on an island adventure, through the paradise shores of Indonesia and the Philippines. Then arrive in Japan: a country of extreme juxtapositions. It feels more like a different planet than a small archipelago of volcanic islands. Stay a while in Tokyo, a city at the forefront of worldwide technological advancements, but which still reveres its long and ancient history. This is the place where progressive modernity collides with the past; welcome to Japan.

Food makes the world go round; it can make or break even the very best cruise itinerary. That’s why Oceania Cruises are proud to hail themselves as the home of the ‘finest cuisine at sea’. It’s a bold statement, but not one without precedent. Here’s their recipe for success.

One master chef

With legendary chef, Jacques Pépin at the helm, it’s no wonder Oceania’s food has risen to the forefront of the industry. As the Executive Culinary Director, he brings his culinary wizardry and innovative ideas aboard every ship. Working closely with the talented teams of chefs on each ship, Pépin has developed menus to delight every guest, and built a strong foundation for excellence.

A magnificent setting A sensory explosion from start to finish, every delectable course is served up in the setting it deserves. Tables are adorned in the finest bone china, immaculately polished silver and fine cotton linens. Fine wines are poured into sparkling Riedel crystal. The stunning décor matches the brilliance of each bite, and flawless waiting staff graciously serve course after course.

Time to create

The intimate nature of these luxurious ships means that every dish is given the time it deserves to be perfect. Always fresh and never mass produced, the menus beautifully reflect the destinations you visit. This is more immersive dining, adding extra authenticity to your travels. With daily changing menus, you’ll never tire of the sumptuous choices available to you.

The finest ingredients Behind every spectacular dish are the freshest ingredients. Meticulously prepared, quality ingredients go into every course; from the King’s Cut Bone-In Prime Rib steak to the special Viron flour that goes into the artisan breads. During every voyage the chefs create thousands of dishes, each one showcasing their incredible talents and attention to the finest details..

Diverse dining Each menu blends new and exotic dishes with revered classics, creating a distinctly different dining experience in each restaurant. And an open-seating policy means you can try them all. You have the freedom to dine where, when and with whom you wish. Choose from four restaurants aboard Regatta, Insignia and Nautica, or six aboard Marina and Riviera.

GREAT BARRIER REEF An underwater wonderland

Admiring Sydney harbour or visiting Ayers Rock? Reasons for visiting Australia can be one of a million, but exploring the Great Barrier Reef has got to be among the best.

This natural wonder of immense proportions is the world’s largest coral reef, made up of 3000 individual reefs, 900 islands, and stretching over 2000km along the east coast of Australia. That’s why it’s earned its name as one of the great natural wonders of the world.

The eco system supports the greatest concentration of life on the planet, with thousands of species of fish, corals and molluscs, not to mention a huge variety of sharks, dolphins, turtles and plants.

Known as Australia’s ‘Blue Outback’, the grandeur and beauty of this spectacle draws over two million tourists to admire it each year. And a cruise is one of the best ways to see all that is on offer; weave between the countless islands of snow white sands and

turquoise waters, admiring the spectacular marine life around you.

The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of 74 islands on the Great Barrier Reef; these jewels off the coast of Queensland are true drops of perfection in the ocean. Hamilton Island is the largest, combining countless activities with spectacular beauty.

Bathe on the sands of perfect beaches and allow the tropical environment to engulf you. Snorkelling or diving is the best way to explore; vibrant shoals of tropical fish will inquisitively approach, and the rainbow colours of the incredible reef will amaze. Whales, dolphins and giant sea turtles may grace your presence, as you discover the magic of this marine paradise.

FOCUS ON:

HAWAII A volcanic paradise

Mountains protrude from the Pacific in lush green peaks, sculpting this exotic playground that allures travellers from across the globe. Expect to be mesmerised by a floral fragrance blowing in the warm breeze, and enticed by the tranquil waters.

With various distinctive islands to choose from, there’s something for every traveller, from honeymooners seeking romance to family fun adventures. Dramatic scenery is common throughout the archipelago; in Kauai sheer cliffs plunge into the sea, and on Maui the summit of Haleakala provides a sunset like no other.

See the most active volcano on earth on Hawaii’s Big Island, with the possibility of seeing an eruption of lava into the sea. Find dolphin-friendly waters on Oahu and bask on long stretches of white sand beaches. There are endless activities on land and at sea to inspire all tastes. Surfing is what Hawaii is best known for, with spectacular

swell in the tropical waters inviting water-sports fans to return year on year.

With huge stretches of coastline to discover, kayak, swim or snorkel to experience the calm and clear waters that are a haven for marine life.

Alternatively, hiking tours will guide you through the lush canyons, rainforests and waterfalls inland. Delicate hibiscus flowers bloom on bushes and a laid back vibe infiltrates each island. This is like no place on earth. Say aloha to a tropical paradise this winter with a visit to the volcanic lands of Hawaii.

Your incredible tours start here…

This tour offers an in depth discovery of the expansive coastline of California. From the Golden Gate Bridge to downtown San Diego, experience the diversity of the sunniest State.

With plenty of time to explore at your leisure, plus tours of the famous landmarks, you’ll feel well-acquainted with San Francisco after a three night stay. See the Twin Peaks, Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, and travel by the famed cable cars up and down the hilly streets.

Your next stop is the spectacular natural beauty Yosemite National Park. Wind through the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains to reach the park, where you’ll be awe-struck by the incredible beauty of waterfalls, remarkable rock foundations and plunging valleys. Alpine meadows and groves of trees will flood your eye-line as you take an open-air tram to view the sites.

The next day you’ll continue onwards to Monterey, home of the famous 17 mile drive. Along the incredible coastline, pass through the Del Monte forest, and past the Lone Cypress Tree and Seal Rock. As you arrive in old Monterey, you’ll discover lovingly restored historic buildings and historical diversity. This charming city is often described as the place where California was born.

Between Monterey and Santa Barbara, drive the Big Sur coast, flanked by Santa Lucia Mountains, and stop off at San Simeon for a tour of the castle. Later, roll into the enchanting city of Santa Barbara, famous for its unique setting between breathtaking mountains, valleys, beaches and islands.

You’ll spend a day touring the most historic sites, from the Old Mission Santa Barbara Courthouse to the downtown area. The next day is spent travelling the coast to Los Angeles. Walk the Hollywood Hall of Fame and a host of other famous sights, before continuing on to San Diego.

Your final full day is spent exploring the diverse neighbourhoods of the city; from pristine beaches to world-class attractions, take a tour of the Gaslight Quarter, Coronado Island and the Old Town. Then join your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner, to mark the end of an incredible journey.

“We love this brand new California Coast package, which we’ve combined with a magnificent Celebrity cruise through the Panama Canal. From land to sea, you will be looked after all the way.” Nadine Dawson, Product Manager

NEWITINERARY

Your incredible tours start here…Your America Music Cities Tour:

Begin in the New Orleans, the undisputed Jazz Capital of the world. Rich with musical history and cajun cuisine, you’ll have a three night stay to uncover the highlights. Enjoy a walking tour of the famous French Quarter, home of the St. Louis Cathedral, the French Marketplace, Pirates Alley, the Presbytere and Pontalba.

Spend the evening learning to cook Louisiana style at the New Orleans School of Cooking, and head out to a local jazz club to see where the city’s nickname originates.

After a drive along the historic Esplanade Avenue and Honey Island swap, and a trip to the St. Louis cemetery over the next two days, you’ll head north to Memphis: the birthplace of the blues, rock n’ roll and soul.

Your tour of the city offers a one-of-a-kind insight, with local musicians on board to tell stories of the musical heritage. Visit Graceland, the palatial home of Elvis Presley, where The King himself was laid to rest.

Finally, head on to Nashville; pay a visit to the renowned ‘Grand Ole Opry’ - a venue dedicated to honouring country music, past and present. Sit back and enjoy the show, then explore behind the scenes, where many of the legends have prepared to take to the stage.

Your final day takes you into the recording studio where Elvis and Dolly Parton laid down some of their greatest hits. Tour the Country Music Hall of Fame, filled with memorabilia, costumes and instruments, before spending your final evening dining and dancing the night away at the famous Wildhorse Saloon.

“There’s so much packed in to this brand new ‘America’s Music Cities’ tour; my personal highlight is learning how to cook New Orleans style. You really get a flavour for a place once you’ve got to grips with the local cuisine.” Nadine Dawson, Product Manager
