Let the show begin…Over the years Theatre, film, and the media, has become a huge part of not only our country but also the world as a whole. It has become one of the greatest influences on our individual lives and in many ways has become a model of how to live. Especially now in the 21st century, media is not only a source of entertainment and information but it also effects us a much deeper level. There’s something unexplainably powerful about the combination of audio sound, images, music, dialogue, pictures, etc…

Throughout this assignment you will have an opportunity to discover the impact of media, more specifically through theatre and film, as you begin to explore the many aspects and areas involved in a “good show.” Throughout this journey you will follow the role of an actor, director, producer, or screenwriter, and will discover what each contributes to a show, film, etc… Along the journey you will also have the opportunity of creating for yourselves the ending of a film. As you do keep asking yourself the very question…What is it that makes media so impactful?

There are so many mysterious within the world of theatre and film. What makes some of the greatest movies ever known so powerful? There are many areas in which contribute to not only the outcome of a show or film, but more importantly the impact it has on its viewers. Your job along this journey, is to discover the ways in which this mission is accomplished.

Playing the part of the Director, the Actor, the Screenwriter, and the Producer, you will discover along your journey the important roles that each of these contribute to the outcome of a film. Without any of these important roles, there would be no film. Each and every role plays a specific part in the making of a film.

You will have the opportunity to research your character and the role in which they play within the process of the film making. The better you understand your role, the better you will be able to perform the tasks that are set before you. For if you understand not only what they do but how they do it, you will have a clearer understanding of the part that you will be playing.

Have fun and be creative! After having a better understanding of your character and the role that they play, you will then travel through the clip of a film (teacher’s choice). You will be shown only a small portion of a film either at the beginning or in the middle. As a group you will then have the opportunity to create your own ending.

When watching the clip make note of what is happening in the film. What are the actors thinking, feeling,…? What it taking place within the plot and what is causing the action, drama of the film? How could the end have a twist, or what could be used to demonstrate the characters better…? These are just a few things to consider while creating your film ending. The more you analyze and critique, the better understanding you will have of what’s going on and the easier time you will have at creating an ending that is original and unforgettable. To accomplish your task there are some steps in which you will want to follow. I will try to break it down as clearly and precisely as I can, to help you better understand your mission: 1.First you'll be assigned to a team of 5-6 students.2.You will then choose which role you want to play. Each group will contain: 1 Director, 1 Screenwriter, 1 Producer, and 2 or 3 actors depending on the film clip chosen (Your teacher will specify).3.You will then research the role of your character and what they contribute to a film. I have attached a few links below to help in your researching. Follow the links, learn about your character, then write 4-5 characteristics or job descriptions that apply to your character.

4.Next you will be shown a small film clip (your teacher’s choice). The film will be stopped somewhere before the end.5.It will be you and your teammates job to re-create the rest of the film.6.The length of your team’s created ending should approximately 5-10 min long7.According to the role you play you will have an individual assignment due:

Director: Will turn in any paper or papers showing different notes, directions, etc…used while directing the rest of the film.

Actors: Will have to have lines memorized and will be responsible for acting out the screenwriters script.

Screenwriter: Will write the script or ideas for the ending of the film. They can turn in either a complete script or just an outline of the created ending.

Producer: Will have to turn in all notes involving planning, direction, ideas, prop ideas, etc…8. On the day of your presentation you will turn in your research notes and will present your created ending of the film in front of the class. Before you present you will introduce yourselves and what role you played in the making of the film.

You Did It! You have created a masterpiece!

Throughout your journey you have discovered the different roles within the film making and why they are important. You have had an opportunity to act yourself within one of these roles and have then created your own idea for the ending of a film.

You have not only learned more about teamwork, but you have also been able to discover how important each role is. Without one of these roles not existing, there would be no film. As you know in your own lives, film is important, is impactful, and is a huge part of our society today.

Film has a way impacting our lives and touching our hearts, like nothing else can. I challenge you to continue on your journey of understanding film and how its created. Just because you are at the end of this activity, does not mean you should let it end there. Keep discovering, keep learning, keep analyzing why and what makes film so impacting on our world. The more you understand about film the more you will enjoy watching film, because you will have a greater understanding of how it works.

This WebQuest has been designed as a tool to bring students to a better understanding of the world of Film and Theatre. There will be 5-6 students assigned in a group each taking on a different role. Each group will have 1 Director, 1 Screenwriter, 1 Producer, and 2-3 Actors depending on the film clip chosen. The students will work first individually, as they research their character’s role and what they add to the production of a film or show. Students will then work in a group to create their own ending of a film, in which they will act out.

In completing the WebQuest students will use the internet as a means to research their character’s role. They have the opportunity of using some of the links already provided within the lesson, as well as any other sites that may apply to their area. Students are to use these sites in order to gain a better understanding of their character and what they bring in the production of a play or film. After researching their individual characters, they will then share what they have found with the other members in their group. This will help the students as they are planning and creating the ending of their film. The better they understand their role, the more efficient they will be able to be with their assignment.

Purpose of Lesson:

The purpose of this lesson is to expand the students understanding of Film and Theatre. First identifying the different roles involved in the production of the film, and their importance. Secondly, having an opportunity to create their own ending of a film will allow them to observe how much work and time is involved in the production of shows and film. Lastly, they will learn what makes a film impactful and what tools are used to make a good film. Most importantly students will learn how to work as a team and realize along the way that effort from each person is what determines the outcome of the show or film.

This project is designed for 12th grade students. Originally it was designed to be used for a Theatre course, though could be modified to fit a number of other courses such as: Speech, English, Art, … This lesson could also be used for other grade levels, though may need some modification to fit their abilities and understanding depending on the grade level.

The learners will only need to know a few concepts prior to beginning this lesson. Those concepts may include:

* Some prior knowledge of the internet and how to navigate * An understanding of research and how to find out more about the

This particular lesson should not need more than one teacher, though if available another teacher may be handy during the day the students present. Would help keep things under control and more managed. Another fun idea would be to have someone within the film or theatre industry come speak to the students for a day about their experiences and to answer any questions the students may have. You could also have the guest speaker present the day the students present, may even encourage them to take more time and effort in their final show.

Students Guide Steps:1)First divide the class up into 5-6 students per group (Will be determined by the amount of actors needed for the chosen video clip)2)Explain to the students that they will need to decide who plays the part of the director, the producer, the screenwriter, and the actors.3)Next have the students research their individual characters, writing notes of 4-5 things that they discover about the role or job description of that character.4)After writing down their notes they are to then share what they found with their other group members. This allows for the students to have a better understanding of the role of each character and how they will contribute to the task.5)Once students have had time to discuss you will then explain to them that they will be shown a small film clip. Make them aware of the fact that the film clip will be stopped before the end. It is then their job to create as a group, the end of the film. Each character in their group will have a specific assignment that will be due.Director- turn in any notes on script or paper used while directingProducer-turn in any notes that involve planning, direction, props, ideas, etc…Screenwriter-turn in full written script of ending of play (discussed with teammates), out line of play, or notes of ideas, plan, etc…Actors-will be required to act out the ending of the play that is created. (will use any props that are needed, etc…) Actors should practice good performance skills: voice projection, actions, facial expression, memorized lines, etc…6) Once rules have been explained, then show the film clip in class (clip will be shown either of the beginning or middle of a film. This allows for the students to create their own film ending). Be sure that the clip contains no more than 2 or 3 actors to allow for all parts to be filled.7) Next explain to the students that their task is to create an ending of the film. All students in the group will collaborate and pull their ideas together to create the finished product. The presentation has to be 5-10 min long and will be presented in class. Before presenting the students will introduce themselves and the part they played in the making of the film (director, producer, screenwriter, actor). 8) After students have presented all their projects, then show the end of the film so students can observe and compare the differences of the ending they created and the ending that was in the actual film.

This lesson is very useful for several different reasons:

•Allows students to be able to work as a team•Allows students to work individually•Gives opportunity for students to practice researching a particular subject•Allows student to be able to share and collaborate information, to allow all in the group to have a better understanding of each character and the role they play•Is a way for students to observe and discover for themselves all the different roles within Film/Theatre•Allows students to realize how important each of these roles is, for without even a one of them their would be no show or film•Gives opportunity for the students to analyze and critique film•Allows the student to focus on what is important within the plot, setting, characters, story, action of a film or play.• Gives opportunity for the students to use their imaginations and to be creative as they create the ending of the film•Allows students to be able to see and understand not only what makes a good film but how impactful and powerful film and theatre can be•Allows the students to notice the details as well as the big picture•Allows for the students to have practice and experience in areas they may have not had before (acting, directing, scriptwriting, et…)•Gives opportunity for students to be able to see the difference between the film ending they have created and the original film ending.
