Chil. Chem. Soc. v.49 n.4 Concepción dic. 2004 http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S071797072004000400001 Carlos Gustavo Andrade Plaza, full Professor of Chemistry at the Universidad de Chile graduated as a Pharmaceutical Chemist in 1959, after receiving the award for the best student of his class. Sponsored by a scholarship from the Agency for International Development, he entered the Master of Science Program at Chicago University, under the advice of Professor Henry Taube (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1983). Later on, Carlos Andrade received his Ph.D. degree in 1964 from Stanford University, where Professor Taube had been appointed Full Professor. The publications derived from his Ph.D. thesis in the field of kinetics and mechanisms in coordination chemistry were relevant contributions, as is shown by the number of times they have been cited in Inorganic Chemistry journals. The lasting value of these articles is also demonstrated by the fact that they are recognized even at the present time. The high level of his work in Professor Taube´s laboratory, as well as his remarkable abilities and qualities as a human being, were acknowledged by those who had the luck to work with him. Many years later, Professor Taube would mention Carlos as one of the most intelligent of his students. In 1964, Carlos returned to Chile to continue the academic career that he had begun as a researcher at the Instituto de Física Nuclear Laboratorio de Radioquímica Universidad de Chile. His interest in developing the sciences in Chile prompted him to joint other outstanding scientists in the country to create the Faculty of Sciences, where he was awarded a chair in the first generation of academic staff. He initiated and developed several lines of research, all of them in the field of coordination compounds: kinetics and mechanisms of thermal and photochemical reactions, and reactions generated by gamma ray radiolysis. Carlos Andrade's laboratory was a pioneer again when, around 1977, in collaboration with colleagues of his group, he began working in bioinorganic chemistry which then was an emerging area in the world. His research in all the mentioned fields received financial support from DTI Universidad de Chile, the National Science Foundation, PNUD and Fondecyt. The training of young chemists was a characteristic priority of Carlos. He trained an important number of undergraduate and graduate students who received their degrees in Chile and from the University of
