Seasons’ Greetings! From the President’s Desk

December is a month full of year-end, “to dos”. One “to do” may include submitting

your donation to the Donald & Isabel Stewart Endowed Scholarship (DISES) which, this

year, helped two wonderful Spelman little sisters with tuition (see article on page 1).

Another “to do” may include attending one of the many local NAASC chapter

holiday events, see page X for those chapters with upcoming events. Perhaps one

“to do” includes paying your NAASC dues. As you know, we are heavily in the process

of getting all alumnae to join in honor of the 125th anniversary of the NAASC.

Whichever one you haven’t done, let this note be your encouragement! Your

donations, your labor, and your love are needed and all will be very appreciated by

the Spelman College Family!!

The NAASC Executive Committee membership and Chapter leaders can “check off” their participation

in the December Meeting, held December 2 – 4 on the Spelman College campus. The executive

committee meeting was held concurrently with the Leadership Development Institute, which is attended

by NAASC chapter presidents and open to at least one other chapter leader. Some of the highlights of

the weekend included:

The NAASC President’s Address.

Presentations by the Spelman College President, Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell; Vice President of

College Relations, Dr. Jane Smith, C’68; Vice President of Enrollment Management, Ingrid Hayes;

Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Jesse Brooks; Director of Alumnae Affairs and

NAASC Vice President, Sharon Owens; Dean of Students, Dr. Fran Cee Brown-McClure, and

Director of Admissions Tiffany Nelson, C’2000.

A presentation by Francesca Martinez of the American Heart Association in support of our “Do

Something for You…Do Something for Your Community” service efforts.

A brief overview of an alumnae inspired donor giving challenge by Board of Trustees member

and alumna Cynthia Jackson called, “SpelmanRally17.”

The Leadership Development Institute, attended by NAASC Chapter Presidents, included

presentations covering policies and procedures by President-Elect Keva Wright Berry, NAASC

Treasurer Georgette Johnson, Constitution and Bylaws chair Danielle Butler Simmons, as well as

an extended version of the parliamentary procedure workshop given in September by

Parliamentarian Beth Sapp James. Immediate Past President Dr. Daphne L. Smith also

presented on suggested NAASC protocol.

In addition, a slate for the three open elected NAASC positions was approved and has been forwarded

to the elections committee to prepare the ballots. Results of the elections will be featured in an upcoming

issue of the newsletter and elected officers shall be sworn in at the May 2017 Annual Meeting and

Luncheon. We encourage all NAASC members, particularly those “2s” and “7s” that share class reunions,

to plan to attend the luncheon meeting.

Finally, we are off to a great start this program year. I would appreciate hearing from NAASC members

as to what services you would like to Association to provide. If you are a chapter member and have

some expertise you are willing to share with the Association, please forward your comments to me at

[email protected]. I look forward to writing to you in the upcoming year!

Sisterly,

Tara L. Buckner, C’87

NAASC President

On Friday, November 11,2016, the Huntsville Area

lunch in the always impressive Alma Upshaw

Nelson, Director of Admissions, her staffers and
