JOURNAL OF JOHN EVANS Soone after that I goined the chirch of Juses Christ of latear- day Sainta I got aquinted with William Henshaw the first mish- onary to South Wales who was sent thare by Loranzo Snow from North Hampton I think who was then Prasedent of the London Confrance about the year 42 or 3 and he organised a branch of the chirch in a place cald pendaren a place which layes betweene Dowless and Merthyr Tydfill, and I new the first man that he baptised in Wales and hes name was William Davies comonley called William Davies of Rhymey and he was a Taylor By trade and he was one of the first that I hurd prech and convinsd me to the gospel this was at Myrthyr one Sunday evning after dark in a large asambley Hall to a large Conggregation and he preached from Mathew 7 chapter 21 verse and 24 ver and on down to the end and I hurd William Hensha say once as he was preching on the maket square at merther on an ocation of some confrance I think. that when he first Began to prech and Baptise and organised a Branch of the church and the members regoyseing gratley in the same the people of the world and other Denomen- ations began to prophesay against him and say that in 9 months that thay would be a l l gon and Dunaway with and be no more and now seaide he thare is 9 years since then and it is more alive than ever so it showes by this who is the fallse prophets and who is the trew prophets and now William Hensha was a miner or a coliear by ocupation and he marred a Welsh Lady from the Bordor of Monmoth and hareford cald the Welsh hay and Broather Lensha imegrated to amarica some time in the erley fiftys and agine I met with Brother William Hensha in Saint Lowis at a place called gravois diginges a colemineing district and be- came hes naybor and worked in the same colepit has he did and hearley the sam roome as hem and he was a veary good miner and a fine man and so was Sister hensha a fine woman and thay had 3 fine Boyes named Josaph and Hyram and Siras and I hurd of them havin a fine girl but I did not know hur I rather think that she was dad before I came to the cuntrey. and agine I got aquinted with Captaine Dan Jones who was also one of the first mishonares to north wales and baptised the first man thare whos name was Robert Evans and a shoemaker by hes trade and was a veary smart man and in after years was calld to Pre- side over the Western glamorganshire confrance at Swansea Dan Jones was aquinted withe the Prophet Joseph Smith havein met him at the laning at navoo at a tim when he toock a load of saints up from Saint Louis on a steem boate that he was captain of and he got baptise at that time and the prophet tould him that he should go to wales on a mishon and at the time when

to go home to brigham C i t y my Daughter M a t t i e Berg and my grand Daughter C l e o f a Madsen was w i t h me and Mrs. Richard P M o r r i s came w i t h hur automobel down to laveneth south to get me and toock me and my Daughter and grand Daughter to the oregon s h o r t l i n e depot and we got home to Brigham a l l r i t e and I got b e t t e r f a s t from a l l of my ailements but I was l e f t vearey nurves and my sleep l a f t me so t h a t I could not sleep n i t h e r Knight nor day n i t h e r c o u l d I stay in bed f o r nurvesness but a f t e r being in t h i s condishon f o r a few months I got beter agine and so I am now and I enjoy q u i t e a b i t of r e s t and sleep at Knight to but I have hurd maney of my frendes and aqueintanses say that thay naver thought t h a t I co u l d get over that acsedent and l i v e much longer and it is now n e a r l e y one year ago and it apears to be q u i t e a m i s t t r e y but to God be thankes forevear more.

and againe on the F o r t h of J u l y 1917th the ould marshal Band what i s l e f t of them and that was onley three namly Jacob Jensen and John Evans as f i f e a r s and c h r i s t i a n ouleson as a Base drummare and two young snare drummars namly s t u r l i n g Madson and Joseph Watkins and the spekrs was Doctor modleton of S a l t Lake C i t y and Doctor Henderson of Brigham C i t y as uncle sam and the marsal Band was on the Program to take t h a i r place in the parade which was to s t a r t at the L i n c o l n School then est to maine st then south on maine s t r e e t to the Tabernacle and thay s t a r t e up a tewn on the s t a r t and capt it up o f f and on a l l the way up to the Tabernacle and was to take t h a i r place w i t h two other Bands on the c o i r e stand and the f i r s t Band wich was the young scouts Band was c a l l e d to p l a y f i r s t then the m i l e t a r e y Band played a f t e r t h a t then marshal Band played a couple of tunes one of them Being the g e l i L e f t behind me then thay ware c l a p t out agine so the people must have i n j o y e d i t vearey much and the parade c o n s i s t e d most a l l of atomobels and the and a f t e r the meting the peopele a l l went Down to the C i t y park whare thay had Dinar and good t h i n g s to eate and a f t e r that chating and t a l k i n g about How w e l l thay i n j o y e d the the s a l e b r a t i o n and shaking handes w i t h o u l d frendes in the n i c e and f i n e sady grove from the son and i am now 88 years o u l d p a s t .
