• •••••••••••••••••••THEAUTHORSof Scaling Up deserve much credit. The report commissioned by the Ufi Charitable Trust articulateswith clarity and power the benefits of learning technology. And it also sets out a vision of a genuine and sustainablebreakthrough in adult learning through the wide use of technology.

There are uphill battles to win. Coverage of the launch of the trust's initiative in the wider media seems to havegained little traction. There is no controlling other events and the launch, and then unravelling, of the Facebookstock market launch and the savage job cuts at Hewlett-Packard certainly stole the 'technology' headlines in theweek the trust spoke out.

But that is mere timing: the underlying message in the report remains true and crucial; technology tools arespecial because of their versatility and their astonishing processing speeds allowing interaction from manylearners simultaneously and in real-time. And that means the technology is capable of supporting startlingimprovements in learning. Scaling Up points out the opportunities and the barriers to progress, and based onthose findings the trust has indicated where it wants to place its seed funding.

Vocational training at all levels in the workforce is absolutely critical to increasing productive capacity andhence the ability of the economy to regenerate itself and generate wealth. With the tools at our disposal, we areon the edge of another industrial revolution and the e-Iearning profession is in a unique place to kick-start theprocess of delivering radical and lasting change. It must seize the opportunity.
