Communicating Student Learning

Our school is moving into its third year with changes to teaching, learning, assessment and reporting with a re-designed curriculum and a different way of communicating student learning. These changes are easy to access and are available on the school website https://www.whitehorseelementary.com/communicating-student-learning. We invite parents to stay informed and to connect with us with questions, comments and feedback at any time throughout the year. There will also be more formal ways to provide feedback during this year.

The first communication of student learning for 2019-2020 is the Goal Setting Conference. During the goal setting conference, joint goals are determined for the student. Parents have an opportunity to ask questions and to determine how they can support their child’s learning. Parents receive a copy of their child’s goals, which will be sent home in early November. For Kindergarten and Grade 1, the conference is a parent-teacher dialogue. No children attend; For grades 2 to 7, the conference is a three-way dialogue with student, parents, and teacher on the evening of Thursday, October 17th or during the day on October 18th.

Lost and Found is Growing! This is from this year alone! Please put your child’s name on every piece of clothing. Come by and take a look - frequently. We would like to see all these items find their rightful home.

Our primary yard can you use your help. If you have some pine cones, small twigs, anything biodegradable that would make playing in the dirt that much more fun, please drop it off at the office. Our students say Merci!

Game de jour on our playground right now is Bayblades (tops). Our primary students have struggled to successfully play this in the sand. They are creative… they have tried plastic Tupperware lids (they break), the end of the slide (causes traffic congestion) and even buckets (not fun). I have an idea that an old satellite dish would work. If you have one about and care to share, please let me know. Might do the trick. We are also open to ideas. Let’s get creative; one of our core competencies!

Mme Julie’s students harvested the veggies from the garden boxes and the greenhouse. The veggies are the result of committed watering all summer long and lots of love. Mme Julie’s students from last year brought home the potatoes and the pumpkins will be used for cooking with this year’s class. Bon appetit!
