As a reviewer you will be asked to create an account in the manuscript submission and review system and provide a list of your specific areas of expertise, which Dr. Foster will use to assign relevant manuscripts to you. Please be sure to choose all applicable areas of expertise when creating or editing your account to maximize the opportunity to receive appropriate manuscripts for review. Reviewers typically are invited to review 3-4 manuscripts per year. If you are new to reviewing or would like information about how to submit a useful review, there are several suggested resources listed in this manual. Dr. Foster and I are always available for questions, so please contact us. Kristie Kristen Overstreet Managing Editor [email protected] Phone: 1.303.229.8129 Roxie L. Your specific comments will offer valuable feedback to improve future work. Reviewer Guidelines Peer review is critical to the quality and integrity of our published manuscripts, and JSPN relies on the expertise of its reviewers to publish state-of-the-art information for practice. This professional role requires some obvious and some not-so-obvious responsibilities. Please see the guidelines for manuscript review below: 1. If after reading this manuscript you know who the author is, decline the review. 2. Notify the editor immediately if you perceive that the content of the manuscript could pose a potential scholarly, financial, commercial, or personal conflict of interest that would bias your review. 3. All manuscripts are privileged communications and are the property of the authors. The work must not be publicly discussed before the manuscript is published. 4. Please read the manuscript at least twice: once for overall content and presentation, the second time for specific flow of thought and accuracy. Manuscript reviewers are carefully chosen for their expertise, and although all reviewers are encouraged to comment on any and all aspects of a manuscript, reviewers are often asked to evaluate specific characteristics.

• As a master’s-prepared reviewer and content expert, please evaluate:

i. accuracy of content ii. adequacy of references to represent state-of-the-art iii. manuscript’s potential contribution to the field.

• As a PhD-prepared reviewer, please evaluate: i. research design, methods, and conclusions for scientific integrity ii. accuracy of content (if you are also a content expert) iii. adequacy of references to represent state-of-the-art iv. manuscript’s potential contribution to the field.

5. Ignore spelling, typographical, or grammatical errors. These issues will be dealt with during the publication process if the manuscript is accepted. 6. Should you suspect plagiarism, duplicate publication, scientific fraud, or financial conflict of interest, notify the editor immediately. 7. Anonymity of the reviews will be preserved. Do not include your name or any identifying information on the review. 8. Provide constructive critique for the author that will help facilitate a successful revision. 9. Refrain from using language in your written comments that would degrade or insult the author(s).

10. Please adhere to the set deadlines so that the author will receive feedback in a timely manner. An important note: be sure to type your review comments in a Word document and then paste them into the comment boxes in your Reviewer Center in Manuscript Central. This will prevent frustration if, for any reason, you lose access to the Web site. The review process is an important one, and we want to support your success in this role. Please contact us if you have any questions: [email protected], Editor-in-chief, or [email protected], Managing Editor. Please also see the excellent guide, “Reviewing Journal Manuscripts,” available at http://www.nurseauthoreditor.com. Following the suggestions in this guide can help you structure your review so that it is easier for you to write and easier for the author to respond to your suggestions. Thank you for evaluating this manuscript.
