THIS SECTION OF THE JOURNAL DETAILS THE STAGES BEYOND WEEK 6 AND FROM THE BEGIN-NING OF OUR INDIVIDUAL JOURNEY TO DEVELOP OUR TECHNQIUE AND THEME AND CONCEPT AND REALLY COME TO TERMS WITH, AND GET A GRIP ON OUR TRANSFORMATIONAL ELEMENT AND WHAT IT MEANS AND HOW IT WORKS.

I’M LOOKING INTO FURTHERING THE CLEAR PLASTIC AND PEREPHIN WAX SWATCH INTO A FULL OUTFIT OR GARMENT. CURRENTLY SOURCING THE RIGHT KIND OF PLASTIC IS POSING THE BIGGEST PROBLEM AND TRYING TO DISCOVER A WAY TO DIP EITHER THE GARMENTS AS A HOLE OR THE PLASTIC PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION INTO THE WAX.

IM INTERESTED IN THE IDEA OF THE WEARER/THE PERSON THAT WILL INTERACT WITH THE GARMENT WILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO BREATH LIFE INTO IT AND GIVE IT CHARACTER THAT IS IN A SENSE TAILORED TO THEIR OWN WAY OF BEING. THEIR MOVEMENTS IN THE GARMENTS WILL CAUSE THE BENDING AND CRACKING THAT FORMS PATTERNS IN THE PLASTIC VERY SIMILAR TO LEATHER OR SKIN. HAIR FOLICLES, SKIN LINES FORM AND AGE WITH MORE WEAR AND EVENTUALLY CRACK OFF IN SEGMENTS.

Hermione Flynn is a fashion house dedicated to producing garments with intellectual and artistic integrity.

Inspired by the relevance of clothing in a social context, Hermione Flynn creates her collections from social oddities - a gentleman on the bus wearing a waistcoat and tie over his rain jacket... an obese woman dressed in head to toe sportswear... a gay man designing his wedding “dress”...

With graphic styling and innovative design, each garment is timeless in it’s aesthetic and creative story.

Designed with, and for, strength and integrity.

These images are taken from her artisinal project titled “The Modern Ritual” in which two girls in two very simple beige pant suits and dress shirts begin dripping and splashing ink on each other, and then drawing on each other with permanent marker. I absolutely love the way the film is produced.

It documents the process beautifully but in such an artistic fashion film kind of way rather than a stale documentary type film.

TOILING WITH THE PVC WAS A REALLY GOOD MOVE. INTITALLY I WAS TESTING RAGLAN SLEEVE PATTERNS IN CALICO, WHICH DIDN’T TEST THE PATTERNS AT ALL BE-CAUSE THE AMOUNT OF GIVE AND MOVEMENT IN THE PVC DIFFERED INCOMPARABLY.

FOR ITEM 1 I WANTED A CACOON TYPE SHAPE IN THE BODY AND A NICE RAGLAN SLEEVE (THE SLEEVE CHOICE WAS NOT JUST AN AESTHETIC DECISION, BUT ALSO LOGISTICALLY WAS MORE REALISTIC WITH THE DIFFICULT PVC).

TESTING WITH NORMAL WHITE COTTON AND THEN A CLEAR FILAMENT POLYESTER THREAD I PREFERRED THE VISUAL OF THE CLEAR BUT IT JUST WASN’T GOING TO WORK. IT BROKE TOO EASILY AND DIDN’T AGREE WITH THE MACHNES OR ANY HAND SEWING TECHNIQUES I TRIED. I PERSISTED WITH IT FOR GARMENT ONE BUT WILL HAVE TO ABANDON IT FOR THE NEXT FEW.

THIS IS GARMENT # 2 WHICH I GOT REALLY INTO AS I WAS MAKING IT AND FORGOT TO DOCUMENT THE PROCESS OF IT. I BASED IT ON A TRADITIONAL TRENCH COAT SO IT HAS THE FLAP OVER THE FRONT LEFT SHOULDER AND THE BACK. I DECIDED TO USE A NORMAL SET IN SLEEVE WHICH WAS A REAL CHAL-LENGE. I COULD HAVE OPTED FOR A RAGLAN TO SUIT THE OTHER DRESS BUT I WASN’T HAPPY WITH THE WAY THAT WAS GOING TO EFFECT THE TRENCH FLAP. I HAD TO SET THE SLEEVE IN BY HAND AND I DISCOVERED THAT USING FLOUR OR BABY POWDER MADE IT A LOT EASIER TO MOVE AND THEREFORE SEW.

I PROCEEDED TO ADD SOME OF THE TUCKS AND PLEATS IN THE SIDE SEAMS OF THE JACKET TO KEEP ITS SILOUHETTE SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE PREVIOUS DRESS. I’M VERY EXCITED TO SEE THEM BOTH COVERED IN WAX.

AFTER EXPERIMENTING ON A COUPLE OF LARGE PIECES OF SCRAP PVC I DECIDED THAT I MUCH PREFFERED THE OPAQUE NATURE OF THE WAX WHEN IT WAS BRUSHED ON. IT TOOK ON A TEXTURE THAT I THINK REALLY SUITED THE AESTHETIC OF THE GARMENTS AND THE THEME AND WOULD DO IT MORE JUSTICE. THE WAX ALSO ENDED UP BEING FAR LESS MALUABLE THAN THE ONES I HAD BEEN EX-PERIMENTING WITH DURING THE FIRST HALF OF SEMESTER AND THIS ONE SET HARDER AND CRACKED OFF BECAUSE OF THAT. SO I THOUGHT THE CONTAST VISUALLY BETWEEN THE STARK WHITE TEXTURED WAX TO IT CRACKING OFF TO A CLEAR PVC GARMENT WOULD BE REALLY PRETTY.

THESE ARE THE UNEDITED VERSIONS OF A FEW SHOTS FROM THE PHOTO SHOOT. I’M REALLY HAPPY WITH THEM. DEFINITELY ONES THAT ARE A LITTLE BIT MORE ABSTRACT LIKE THE ONE TO THE LEFT AND SOME OF THE ONES WITH MORE INTERESTING COMPOSITION THAN JUST A FULL BODY FASHION SHOOT.
