MAXIMISING YOUR CHILD’S POTENTIAL
I recently read A Guide For Parents on
Choosing the Right School.
The publication was essentially an
advertisement for independent schools. I
must admit I was fascinated by the choice
of words selected by the author to
describe the benefits of independent
schooling. Words like...
“Independent schools reward parents’
investment by implanting confidence
in students.”
“Setting students up to succeed to
their ability is the guiding principle of
an independent education.”
“With the mandate of a committed school
community, independent schools are
uniquely positioned to provide the key
elements of a good education.”
The brochure went on to outline the five
key elements as:
1. Quality teaching
2. Standards and resilience
3. Pastoral care
4. Preparation for life after school, and
5. Extra-curricular opportunities.
My issue isn’t that I discredit any of the content within this publication, it’s just that it failed to
differentiate independent schools from successful, achieving, community based public schools.
It should be a community expectation that all schools aim to deliver effective education by doing
all of the things identified in the brochure. I have included the current ‘Barrenjoey’s School
Vision’, which is the cornerstone of our School Plan and guides all that we do. Now compare
this to the independent school’s advertisement – I think you’ll agree they are very similar in both
vision and expectations.
By all means pay $25,000 for independent schooling but do so knowing that Barrenjoey sets its
students up to succeed to the best of their ability just as well – if not better, when you factor in
the collective strength of an engaged community.
Within the five key elements many
phrases and idioms were present such
as; the better the teaching – the better the
learning, (students) take responsibility for
their learning and promotion of a ‘growth
mindset’.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Blaze Roberts, Hunter Roberts and Luke Dujic from Barrenjoey High
and Dane Dujic from Avalon Public School.
They were all recently involved in a short film created by Convicts NYC, which is a digital
media brand who produce and publish premium video and multimedia content across multiple
platforms, in conjunction with events and a retail pop up space in New York City and
elsewhere. Founded by Australians living in the USA, Convicts is a global brand with an
Australian spirit.
The film Convicts NYC recently released is a great Profile called ‘Avalon GROMS’ put
together by former Avalon local Peter Maiden, a founder of Convicts, and one of those
‘Aussies now living in New York’. They’re allowing us to share it with you so you can get a
taste of how good something can be when it’s done right – this is dynamic, fresh and
unabashed celebrations of this next generation of artists in all walks of life who are clearly
right here right now, using the platforms that back up that credo through text, images and high
quality video.
Last week Pittwater Online News printed a sort about the film and below is the link.

WELLBEING PROGRAMS
On 27th February, all Year 9 students participated in a sexual health workshop run by external
company Life Lessons. These workshops were run in small groups for 2 hours and aimed in
increase students knowledge and understanding of sexual health issues. A survey at the end of
the workshop demonstrated the students had a very positive experience. Almost all of students
(98%) indicated that the workshop enhanced their decision making/problem solving skills in
relation to sexual health / relationships.
This graph compares the student’s level of knowledge about ‘Sexual Health and Contraception’
before and after the workshop took place. Almost all of the students (99%) indicated that after
the completion of the workshop, their knowledge ranged between good and excellent.
This program is the first of many Wellbeing Programs that Barrenjoey High School are running for
all year groups in 2017. In the coming weeks, all students will be watching the Motivational Media
Presentation, as well as year 10 completing the PARTY program, Year 11 & 12 completing a
workshop focused on academic resilience and Year 7 & 8 students completing a cyber safety
workshop.
Please ensure that you have paid your Wellbeing Payment
to ensure the smooth running of these programs.
Mr Seymour’s Weekly Science Fact
TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY (TERM 1, 2017)
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the State, will
participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback
survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other
student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and
effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick
feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the
different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have
used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will
typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours
between 13 March and 7 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students.
If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by 17
March.
Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:
http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
Viruses are all around us, they are the most
numerous “life form” on Earth. (There is debate as
to whether viruses are truly “living” things). It has
been estimated that there are about 10 nonillion
virus particles on Earth (that is 1 followed by 31
zeros or 10 million million million million million
particles). If laid end to end they would stretch right across our Milky Way galaxy more than 1000 times.
