in 1831. He was promoted to Fieldmarshal in 1836.

His manoeuvers in peace times were a sample of excellence and even better his exemplary measures taken in the war years of 1848 a~d 1849 during which he achieved the apex of his glorious career. Radetzky stayed on as Army Co~aander though already 90 years old and Civil Governor and Military Goveraor-General until he resigned February 28, 1857. Radetzky came from an old Bohemian family of noblemen. His bravery was the mote of the day. The wars i~ Italy against Piemonte were the basis of teaching tectics and strategy for a long time.

Finally I would like to mention that the Austrian Army had even a march named after Radetzky, highly melodious and easy to remember. He was given a Marshals Baton, however according to the most k~owledgeable historian of Austro-Hungarian Army History, this Baton is lost.

The picture, from the Official archives, is originally in color and is extremely beautiful. It was sent to me by Dr. Allmayer-Beck of the Austrian Heeresgeschichtliches ~seum, Mil~t~rwissenschaftliches Institute. Allmayer-Beck is the greatest living expert on Austro-Hungarian Military History. It shows Radetzky, middle aged, wearing more Grand Crosses than probably any other man ever obtained in his life time.

Here are the Official Decorations he had:
