• He was the highest ranking officer to resign from the US Army when his state (Virginia) seceded
• He became a Confederate General • He helped lead Confederates to victory at the Battle
of 1st Bull Run• Johnston commanded Confederate forces during the
1862 Peninsula Campaign before being wounded and replaced by Robert E. Lee
• After recovering from his wounds, he was given command of the Confederacy’s western armies
• At the Battle of Atlanta (1864), the Union Army defeats the Confederate Army led by Johnston
• On April 17, 1865 Johnston will surrender one of the last CSA armies to Union General William T. Sherman near Durham, North Carolina
