This site is the only “empty” spot in the cen-tral area of the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia. The area now is abandoned industrial zone. It is perfect to become “the City” of the town like most of the capitals around the world have. It will have a lot of public spaces - gardens, pools, rentable spaces, cultural areas, areas, sport fields, underground parking spaces etc. In addition, there will be a pri-vate buildings with different variety of flats.

The two tallest buildings will became a symbol of the town and part of the atrac-tive tourist tour. That will be the highest point of the town - around 167m. There will be rotating restaurant on the top of the lower of the towers. The revolving rate will be one time per hour and will enableenable public to enjoy a panoramic view without leaving their seats.

Main focus was the idea for a Home as a Template for a School – materials, colors, spaces, courtyards etc. I was looking for flexible and adaptable design with social areas, green spaces indoor; balconies, display cases, facilities open to public, galleries for student work, smallsmall group meeting spaces, learning centers, multipurpose rooms, glass walls, rooftops, collaboration areas, con-ference rooms and so on. And also I wanted to establish a variety of outdoor learning environments – classrooms, study areas, amphitheaters etc.

I decided that fine art school should be as open to the nature as possible. The students will be inspired by the nature and the natural light. All classrooms are facing south and all studios are facing north. The offices are located in the east/north corner, the parking is on the shady north. The gymnasium is on the shady north. The gymnasium is open to the courtyard and you can have a direct visual contact with it.

TheThe natural lighting of the exhibition areas and the inner yard gives the building its character. The goal was to provide a mediated diffusion of light without losing the sense of the external climatic conditions. That way the students and the visitors would be aware of its continu-ous variations according to the time of the day and the season.

Semester : Spring ’13Course : Street Furniture & Art Instaltation Proposal for BirguDuration : 10 weeksProject Coordinator : Mr. Patrick GaleaSite :Site : Birgu, Malta , EU

Page 45: Jordan Kalapchiev - Portfolio 2013

The Proposal

We ended up with night installation made of 2 lasers and 2 sets of “mirrors”, where the laser beams will reflect and bounce.

TheThe main idea is to attract the public to notice and cross that dynamic space between “Victoria Square” and the sea-side and vise versa. In this way, the public can pay attention to churches and the museum. We want them to feel the character and spirituality of the space.space.

During the night the laser beams will be visible from the nearest towns L-Isla, Floriana, the capital of Malta - Valletta and from Birgu waterfront and main square.

AtAt the end this proposal has unique design which attracts people. It is easy to be installed and uninstalled and it is easy to be switched on and off when it is necessary. It is low cost and with low energy consumption.

The Task

The task is to make installation in Birgu, Malta, EU. It should enrich the area and attract maltese and tourists to enjoy the town. ResultsResults must respect and preserve the historical features of the area and to add new ones to them.

Budget limit is € 1,000.

Birgu I Brief

Birgu is located on the south side of the Grand Harbour in Malta. It is an old town with its origins reaching back to medieval times. When the Order of the Knights of St. John arrived in 1530, they made Birgu the capital city of Malta, since the former capital, Mdina did not suit their naval requirements. BirguBirgu was the site of a major battle between the Knights and the Ottoman Empire during the Siege of Malta in 1565. After defeating them a new capital city was built on Mount Sceberras, bearing the name Valletta after Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette. After the taking of Malta by Napoleon in 1798, and his eviction by the Maltese, the Brit-ish were invited to Malta and the British Navy made Birgu its base in the Mediterra-nean, and remained there until 1979.

The Task

The task is to present a vision of the future development of some parts of the “Glickstein Quartier” taking into account the existing realities. ForFor this project the development should provide the highest degree of comfort with the lowest possible energy con-sumption for the future inhabitants of the building, based on the Saint-Gobain Multi Comfort principle that will assure a natural extension of the existing neigh-bourhood to the North.

Mannheim I Brief Story

InIn 1606, Frederick IV, Elector Palatine started building the fortress of Fried-richsburg and the adjacent city centre with its grid of streets and avenues ( leading to its nickname "die Quad-ratestadt” / “City of the Squares"). On January 24, 1607, Frederick IV gave Mannheim the status of a "city".

It is located in southwestern Germany, at the confluence of the Rhine and the Neckar in the northwestern corner of Baden-Württemberg. The Rhine sepa-rates Mannheim from the city of Ludwig-shafen.

In Mannheim was built:-The world’s first bicycle by Karl Freiherr von Drais in 1817.-The world’s first motorcar by Karl Benz in 1885.-The world's first rocket plane by Julius Hatry in 1929.

SinceSince Mannheim was an important in-dustrial centre, during the WW-II it was heavily damaged during aerial bombing.

The architectural design was influ-enced by energy efficiency consid-erations, as well as historical facts about Mannheim - also known as "City of the Squares" for orthogonal rectangular neighborhoods and streets.

The private buildings are with quad-rate plan. Every two of them shared one underground parking and one staircase and elevator. Main en-trance, Entrance to the rentable space and the car parking en-trance are placed to the north.

The building is composed of two cubic volumes and the third that connects them. These volumes are intersected by an inclined plane perpendicular to the average sol-stice in the region. So the entry of sunlight is maximum in the south, fully glazed facade.fully glazed facade.

The apartments face south with a beautiful view overlooking the park. Each apartment has a winter garden, which is a kind of a con-nection between the park and the residential space. All winter gar-dens are designed to open and can be turned into terraces.

Page 62: Jordan Kalapchiev - Portfolio 2013

The staircase and the communication are separate self-supporting steel structures that minimizes thermal bridges with the building. The relationship between the building and the street is achieved through the glass curtain-wall covering the staircases and semi-transparent metal mesh covering the rest of the north facade, which allows direct eye contact from the street and vice versa. Semi-transparent metal barrier can be also covered with ivy so that each facade is unique. The winter gardens of some of the flats are placed at the two corners of the north facade.

TheseThese buildings were engine hall and assembly hall for the rail-way workers. Our idea is to turn them to exhibition halls with flexible spaces for different kind of events with public plaza be-tween them. We will keep their historical look outside. We are proposing another level carried by separate columns inside. That way the new level can be easily removed in the future if it is necessary. The whole area will be surrounded with selfsupporting mesh with square plan with randomly placed holes.

Houbka’s Interior Bulgaria, Sofia, “Zone B 18” - 2013 This project is not completely finished yet.

Page 71: Jordan Kalapchiev - Portfolio 2013

Friend of mine asked me to design a in-terior for her “new” apartment. The idea was to keep everything simple, func-tional and according to the small budget that we got. We started from scratch, because all the furniture and textures were in poor condition, so we had to replace them with new and to make some changes around. The design was made for a couple with two children, and pos-sibility for three extra extended beds for guests if it is necessary. The building was build in 1987 in Bulgaria, Sofia, in so called “Zone B-18”. The

apartment has kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, three ter-races and a small storage. The total area is 102 sq.m. Main bedroom and one of the terraces are facing east - the rest of the flat is oriented to the west. The building facade is made out of decorative red bricks, which we used as a motive for the interior. The door to the balcony in the kitchen was moved to the other corner and in its place was put window. So the terrace became more accessible, and thus we also increased the natural light in the room.the natural light in the room.

Page 77: Jordan Kalapchiev - Portfolio 2013

This was my grandparents car and my grandfather was its first and only owner. He bought it in August 1983. Unfortunatelly my grandfather past away not long time ago. The last few years the car was kind of abandoned and in a very bad shape. My father and meme decided to start this project restor-ing that car and add some minor up-grades to it while keeping its original look. Some of the things we did:-Keep the original color, but repaint the hole car and add two white stripes from front to back in the sense of the era.

-Add matt black color around the win-dows to make them look as one whole thing.-Replaced all rusty metal parts with new.-Add insulation to the interior to reduce the noise and the temperature losses.-Change the whole electricity instalation from 6V to 12V.-Add a stereo system.-Redesign the dashboard - replaced the -Redesign the dashboard - replaced the kilometer and we added clock, voltme-ter, lighter, cup holder and blue led lights under the dashboard. The ashtray was removed from the top and placed under the console.-The steering wheel was changed with

“classic” one made out of wood and metal. -All seats and doors covers were re-placed with new made out of black fabric. -We repainted the rims in matt black and silver to have that rolling look.-Add two black wing mirrors on each side of the car.-Change the front and rear lights with brand new.As fans of classic, retro cars this proj-ect was a lot of fun for me and for my father as well.

TheThe main idea was to keep the design in the in-terior straightforward and in the spirit of its time, but with some minor changes. The dashboard now is all metal and colored with seafoam green with two white stripes in the middle, as in the exterior. We added clock, voltmeter, lighter, cup holder and led lights under the dashboard. TheThe ashtray was removed from the top and placed under the console. The steering wheel was changed with “classic” one. All seats and doors covers are made of black fabric. In order to have a stereo system, we changed the entire power electricity system from 6V to 12V. Now the car has 4 speakers - one on each door and two at the back. door and two at the back.
