For many of us the changing of the calendar, the beginning of a newyear, is the time for New Year resolutions. Most commonly wecommit to going on a diet and joining a gym. Both are admirableand rewarding goals, exercising our physical self.

We should all commit to leading a healthier lifestyle. Howeverexercising the physical self is only half of the task. What about thespiritual self? The mind and the soul need exercising as well. Thereis no better time than NOW to commit and resolve to improve yourinner self than by joining us at ATC on a more regular basis. Attenda nightly Minyan, it only takes 30 minutes. Certainly this is a quickworkout. However, if you are seeking something more intense, andneed a longer & more in depth workout, try a Saturday morningMinyan. (Just skip the delicious and fattening foods at Kiddush)

Showing up at ATC, is much like showing up at the gym. It takes acommitment. Get beyond the common excuses: "I don't have time","I'm not that religious", "I don't know all of the prayers", "I don'tknow many of the people", "Someone else will help make Minyan, they don't need me." Not true! It's now time to start exercising yourinner self.

Please join us Friday night, February 8th, for a special servicehonoring all of our ATC Past Presidents. Over the years, theseindividuals have stepped up and devoted hundreds of hours to supportand improve ATC. It's now our turn to return the favor and showthese dedicated individuals our love and our thanks. See you there.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 30th. This is the planneddate for the Second Annual Gerry Hartstone Memorial Mini GolfEvent. This will be a fun-filled day for kids and adults alike. Bringa friend, bring a relative, bring the entire family. Last year was fun, this year will be even better.

A special thanks to all of our ATC Seniors. Did you know for yearswe at ATC had a very active Senior Committee? Unfortunatelyover the past few years, this committee became inactive. They didhowever, have a considerable bank account that remained. With theguidance of the Rabbi, the Senior Committee, in particular theirleadership Sam Stein and Irv Snetsky, have made two hugedonations to ATC. First they used some of their bank account topurchase a set of Rimonim, a yad and a breast plate, all pure silverTorah adornments. The next time you are in the main sanctuary, please take notice. And with the balance of their account, theSeniors have made a large donation to the "Roof fund." A veryspecial THANKS to all of our Seniors that have contributed to thiscommittee over the many years. If there is anyone in the "over 55"crowd, or a group of people, that wish to reestablish this committee, please contact me. We would love to see this committee reactivated.

From the Rabbi’s Desk...Chevre,

I've always found Melanie Phillips to be a cogent thinker and writer. As I truly believe that the current government ofIsrael lacks strategic thinking and a clear sense of purpose, I found that this latest Phillips article to be a succinctanalysis of where Israel stands today ideologically. I include it for your consideration.

Rabbi J

Israel's Appetite for Self-Delusion and Self-Destruction

Beyond the grandstanding over President Bush’s visit toIsrael this week, there is an even more important concernthan over what America may be pushing it to do. This isIsrael’s own attitude towards its identity and history and,by extension, its right to exist at all.

Among the Israeli intellectual elite, the instinct for nationalself-destruction reaches near-hallucinatory levels.

A recent research paper by doctoral candidate Tal Nitzan, which wondered why, unlike other armies, Israeli soldiersdid not rape women under their occupation, claimed thatthis was because IDF troops viewed Arab women as sub-human. This absurd piece of malice was awarded ateachers’ committee prize by the Hebrew University.

Clearly, Nitzan should have interviewed Ha’aretzeditor-in-chief David Landau, who was reported astelling US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at adinner last September that the Israeli governmentwanted “to be raped” as it was a “failed state” thatneeded a US-imposed settlement.

Such grand guignol flights from reason can only deepenrespect for the strategic genius of Yasir Arafat.

He understood that while Jews would unite againstconventional attack, they wouldn’t cope with thepsychological pressure of being turned into internationalpariahs through a falsified colonial narrative of oppression.

But even he could hardly have foreseen the extent to whichIsraeli intellectuals would so completely invert their ownhistory, and swallow the fiction that the Middle Eastimpasse is over the division of the land and that Jewishpossession of that land is illegitimate.

This series of untruths has now coalesced into an axiomaticassumption that Jerusalem must be divided, as stated byIsrael’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in an interview in theJerusalem Post last weekend.

But as Dore Gold authoritatively documents in hisimportant book, The Fight for Jerusalem, the Jews have aunique and overwhelming claim to Jerusalem which iscentral to the unique nature of the Jewish state.

It is no accident, therefore, that this pressure to divideJerusalem comes at a time when the Jewishness of Israel isbeing openly called into question. Olmert says that a “two-state solution” is essential to preserve Israel as a Jewishstate. But the Arabs themselves have now ruled out aJewish state altogether.

Olmert insists nevertheless that Mahmoud Abbas acceptsIsrael as a Jewish state “in his soul”. Olmert clearlypossesses truly wondrous psychic powers, displayed evenas members of Fatah associated with Abbas’s ownsecurity apparatus were murdering two Israelis on a hikenear Hebron.

The West believes that dividing Jerusalem is the fairestsolution. But when were aggressors ever thus rewarded atthe expense of their victims, even while they continuedtheir century-old war as the Arabs are doing?

Why doesn’t Israel put the record straight? Why doesn’t itremind the world of that same world’s conclusion back in1920 that the Jews had a unique claim to the entire land ofIsrael, including Jerusalem? Why doesn’t it recall how, when Jordan illegally occupied east Jerusalem until 1967,it desecrated Jewish holy sites, ripping up Jewishgravestones on the Mount of Olives to use them for latrines?

Why doesn’t it tell the world that the Islamic claim toJerusalem is not so much religious as political — and that,as Gold states in his book, since the capture of Jerusalemis seen as the precursor to the fall of the entire West, thedivision of the city would recruit untold additionalnumbers to the global jihad?

It’s a Mitzvah!

It doesn’t do so for two reasons. First, it still fails to graspthat the real battleground is composed not of rockets andhuman bombs but of ideas. And second, much of itsintellectual class has come to believe the mendaciouspropaganda of Israel’s enemies.

In Israeli schools and on campus, there is widespreadignorance of Jewish history and of the indissoluble bondbetween the religion, the people and the land whichconstitutes Jewish identity.

When Israel’s Education Minister issues a textbook forIsraeli Arab children that teaches them the Arabpropaganda line that the 1948 War of Independence was anaqba, or catastrophe, something has gone badly wrongwith the foundations of Israeli self-belief.

The real reason Israel doesn’t fight the battle of ideas todefend Jewish history and identity is that increasingly it isrepudiating them. The Arabs thus don’t need to do muchto bring about the end of the Jewish state. The Jews will doit for them.

Dr. Ehud Netzer, Israel's Indiana JonesArchaeology and Architecture in the New Millennium: Finding Herod's Tomb and its Place in Jewish History

Monday March 10th 7 PM

Professor EhudNetzer, Professor inHebrew University'sDepartment ofArchaeology willdiscuss his discoveryof Herod's tomb onMonday, March10th, 7:00 PM atAhavath Torah

Congregation. The discovery solves one of Israel'sgreatest archeological mysteries. The lecture anddiscussion are sponsored by the South Shore Adult JewishEducation Collaborative and admission is free.

Netzer's area of expertise is the nexus between architectureand archaeology and is the world's leading expert on thearchitecture of Herod the Great. He has initiated and directedexcavations at several building projects of Herod the Great, the ancient king of Judea. In the mid-1960's, Netzer wasco-architect of the famous excavations at Masada, directed byProfessor Yigael Yadin and was responsible for therestoration of the Masada site on behalf of Israel's NationalParks Authority.

Netzer initiated and directed large-scale excavations at thesites of Herodium and Jericho (where he also discovered ahitherto unknown Hasmonean (Maccabean) winter palacecontaining many swimming pools and gardens, the majorarchaeological site that has survived from that period inJewish history).

Netzer directed the Hebrew University expedition to Zippori(Sepphoris) in the lower Galilee, which exposed anoutstanding synagogue, whose floor recently was exhibited inthe Museum of Jewish Art in New York. Later, in 1984,Netzer took a major part in the preparation of the final reportof the Masada excavations. His book, Masada III (the third ina series of five volumes, so far), was awarded an Irene Levi-Sala Book Prize in 1995.

Since 1985, Netzer has collaborated with Kathryn Gleason, assistant professor of landscape architecture and a member ofthe archaeology program at Cornell. Gleason, a specialist onancient Roman gardens and landscapes, excavated thegardens at Masada, Jericho and Herodium and is co-director

of the excavation of Herod's maritime palace at Caesarea, anexcavation currently being prepared for publication.

In addition to directing excavations at several otherbuilding projects of Herod the Great -- such as themaritime palace at Caesarea, a temple at Banias, a fortifiedpalace at Cypros and a unique hippodrome-theater-gymnasium complex at Jericho -- Netzer's wide interest inthe subject has led him to excavate once more at Masada(from 1995 to 1997), and, since 1997, at the winter palacescomplex in Jericho and at Herodium. Netzer announcedhis discovery of Herod's tomb in May 2007.

ATC Family Bingo Puts the "Fun" Back in Fundraising! On Sunday January 6th, the Social Hall filled upnicely with people of all ages. First, the seniors fromWest Stoughton Village came, saving their favoritespots. By game time, they had a third of the roomfilled up. We even had some people from thecommunity who read the ad in the "Pennysaver" anddecided to "check us out".

Our own Hebrew school kids came up after school, munched on pizza from Déjà Vu, bagels from Ruth's,and eyed the prizes they wanted to win on the 30 footprize table.

Prizes were graciously donated by Anne Weiner,Debbie Ricci, Annette Williams, Roy Cohen, and theMiller Family. Barry Greene did a fabulous jobcalling the numbers and explaining how to play the25 different games that we played. Everyone walkedaway with a prize or two or three, and many stated weshould make this a quarterly event.

Again, a special thanks to our donors, Rabbi J, andArthur Arkanase for your generosity.

Thanks to all of our members and families thatattended and to Gwen Berkowsky, Stacy Andler,Anne Weiner, Emily Prigot, Michael Miller, MattMiller, and Paul Greenfield for volunteering yourtime for this FUNdraising event.

Rabbi Henry Gerson Religious School NewsFrom the PrincipalShalom, What a wonderful month at ATC! The fifth andseventh grade classes helped Rabbi J lead services. Thosewho were fortunate to be at services couldn't help but beimpressed at the level of prayer that our students know. Wehave to thank all their present and past teachers and naturallyall the hard work our children have done.

We have been having a wonderful winter (with the exceptionof a few blizzards) and enjoyed a warm day at Moose Hill. The entire Religious School visited the Audubon Sanctuaryin Sharon. We celebrated the holiday of Tu B'Shvat. Mr.David Greenblatt supplied his bus and his fine driving to getus to the reservation. Once there we broke up into fourgroups led by the reservation guides. The guides wentaround with each group and talked about the importance oftrees and nature. The children, parent volunteers, teachersand guides had a wonderful time. The guides who work withchildren all the time were so impressed with our children. They couldn't get over how well behaved and bright they are.(as if we didn't know!)

Mr. Ron Gorin, our Yesod Teacher, is leading the ReligiousSchool in a project of BUTTERFLIES! We will be drawingall kinds of butterflies using various media Each butterflywill symbolize a Jewish child who perished in the Holocaust. This idea came from a Jewish Museum in Texas. When yousee our covered walls with various collages remember ourpast sacrifices that have allowed our wonderful days of nowand the future. We Must Never Forget the Past. Wishing youa wonderful month of good things!

Be Well,

Linda DiskinPrincipal

Kindergarten ClassThe Kindergarten class continues its way through creativelearning!

Although our group is small, the children exhibit a love forlearning and creating. As we expanded our knowledge ofmitzvot, we learned about the mitzvah of LaShon Harah, or“watch your tongue”. The children thought about the nicethings they can say to their friends and families. We spokeabout how words can hurt others inside even though wedon’t see the hurt on the outside. They found out that youcan’t take back something once said! We played the gameof telephone with the first graders to show how words canchange from one person to the next and again we can’t takethe words back!

Our class then shared their favorite phrases that felt good andput them in a special heart shaped picture, and the others wethrew in the trash! Next, we celebrated Tu B’Shevat, the newyear of trees, highly celebrated in Israel with their warmweather, but celebrated here by planting trees. In class weplanted parsley seeds in our decorated pots, which we hopewill grow in time to use on the family seder plates!

We also enjoyed a wonderful field trip to Moose Hill inSharon. Our group learned about the stages of trees, differentkinds of trees, and even had an opportunity to act out and betrees in the forest life cycle. What a perfect winter morningfor an invigorating walk through the woods. Thanks to ourwonderful leader Denise from Moose Hill. As we continueto learn the Alef-bet and go on letter searches through ourclassroom, the children begin to put together their Alef-betbooks, a continued work in progress. So much to do, and sofew weeks to cover it all. Next, we begin to create our ownShabbat objects that we will use at home!!

Bet ClassAnother busy month has kept our studies flowing. Wehave been fortunate to have enjoyed some music time withArthur Arkanase. He has taught us some new melodiesand reintroduced some old favorites as well.

Tu B'Shvat has been a big part of the month, and welearned how important this holiday is to Israel and to us asJewish people. We have decorated pots and done our ownplanting to share with our families. We have created ourspecially overgrown "Tree of Letters" which you can findhanging on the wall outside of our classroom. We plantedthese letters in our minds, to remember for a lifetime, as wehave really begun the path to knowledge of our Jewishheritage.

Our trip to Moose Hill was an extra special treat to helplearn about nature and connect it with Tu B'Shvat. Wecontinue to move along, learning more of the aleph-bet andenjoying each new letter and word. As you can see wehave been very busy and we look forward to learning morein the months to follow.

B'Shalom,

Helayne Magier Adelstein

Alef ClassShalom from Kitah Alef

We have been busy learning new letters in the Alef Bet. Asa matter of fact, Alef was one of our letters along with vavand koof. Our new words included aron ha'kodesh, echad(one), etrog, Vashti, kiddush and kadosh (holy). It was funwhen we played a word game dividing all our wordsamong our classmates. When someone called out anEnglish word, whoever had the Hebrew word card had tostand up, show the word and say it in Hebrew.

Reading our pamphlet "G-d is One" helped us realize howG-d created a world where the wonders of nature reappearyear after year for us to enjoy. We sang the song "HashemEchad" – G-d is one.

Purim is in the second month of Adar this year so we wereable to spend more time studying Tu B'Shvat. Studyingabout Purim was so much fun. We listened to the story ofQueen Esther found in the megillah. We were able tocompare the megillah to the Torah. We discussed thecustoms involved in reading the megillah with itsinteresting characters; sang a new song "Peanut Butter,Poppy, Prune or Chocolate Hamantaschen" along withmany other happy songs. There are many stories aboutPurim and we heard "Esther's Story", "The PurimSurprise" and "Sammy the Spider's First Purim". We likeddoing word searches; designing our own raashonim(noisemakers); and drawing our favorite foods to fill amishloach manot basket (the sending of food gifts tofamily and friends).

We've learned a lot so far and Pesach is just around thecorner.

B'Shalom,

Paula Gaffin

Yesod Class

The topic for this term is the Holocaust. The Holocaust wasa watershed event not only in the 20th century but also inthe entire history of humanity.

We studied Kristalnacht, the Night of the Broken Glass(where all the synagogues and Jewish businesses wereburnt and all of the windows broken), the liquidation of theGhettos and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. We also learnedabout the significant life stories of Hannah Szenes, EliWiesel and Anne Frank.

We continued to learn about the Labor Camps and theDeath Camps such as Auschwitz. As difficult as life was in

these camps, we learned that life continued on. There wereteachers who taught children and some typical Jewishevents such as Bar Mitzvahs.

We just started to learn about the Righteous non-Jewswho sacrificed everything to save Jewish lives. Wefollowed the history of the end of the Nazis and the rescueefforts of the Allies.

Gimmel ClassThe Gimmel Class has had a very busy January. After anice vacation the students came back to class eager to learnand ready to continue their Jewish studies. Hebrewreading, Torah study, Blessings and Prayers, Hebrewvocabulary, Jewish Holidays, are the areas that theGimmel students have been concentrating on this year.

The Gimmel Class began two new books in November,"Shalom Ivrit", and "Shalom Ivrit Prayer Companion",which the students seem to be really enjoying. They arelearning several Hebrew words including everydayvocabulary words. The children are reading short Hebrewstories about family, friends, pets, clothing, food, etc. Each lesson introduces Hebrew vocabulary related to thestory. The students love learning the Hebrew vocabularyand reading and translating the stories. We play variousgames, using the vocabulary words, which reinforces thelearning while also having a lot of fun! In the PrayerCompanion we are learning prayer vocabulary, the roots of

Hebrew words, and the meaning of the prayers as we learnthem. The children are so enthusiastic and full of ruach!

The class continued their Torah studies with the stories ofAbraham, Isaac, Jacob and Esau, and Jacob's two wives,Leah and Rachel. We celebrated the holiday of TuB'Shevat, the "New Year of the Trees" by discussing theimportance of trees to the earth and the environment. Weplanted parsley seeds so we can use the parsley at ourPassover Seders. The students also did various craftprojects related to trees. At the time of this writing, thestudents are looking forward to their field trip to MooseHill in Sharon to learn even more about trees and why theyare so important to our lives.

B'Shalom,

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When youpurchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificatesand prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can usescrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, andother essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenuefor ATC.

Our supplier acts on behalf of churches, schools and othernon profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scripfrom grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers.Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, theparticipating retailers offer a substantial discount. ATC buysthe scrip at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to familieslike yours for full face value. The discount from two to fifteenpercent or more – is our revenue.

Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sellanything. Our congregants produce revenue by making regularhousehold purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.Scrip is available at most major ATC functions.

We stock scrip in various denominations for Shaw's, Stop &Shop, Roche Brothers, Butcherie, Barnes & Noble, HomeDepot, Best Buy, Outback, and more. Go to www.atorah.orgfor a complete list of available vendors.
