About Jon Bibbs!A Renaissance Man Progressing Art, Music and Education for the Ages. !Dr. Jonathan C. Bibbs, (better known as Jon Bibbs) could be called a triple threat: he writes, sings and produces music that is respected and loved around the world. But his credits as a singer / songwriter only scratch the surface. Add accomplished musician, digital media strategist, philanthropist, and educator to that list, and we still haven’t fully defined all of the dimensions of this modern day renaissance man. !!The story of Jon's life as a creative begins in 1983. At age two, his mother enrolled him in piano classes at Virginia Commonwealth University where soon after he became widely known as a “musical prodigy.” By age 12 he was performing alongside the critically acclaimed Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra.!!In 1999, Jon enrolled at Hampton University where he continued to nurture his growing musical talents. Over the next few years he made his vocal debut with True Story (2001) and Red: The Color of Love (2003). Both projects garnered the attention of industry giants, but it was Unbreakable (2005) that catapulted him as an underground soul music staple throughout the entire eastern region. As his fan base grew, Jon found himself recording and sharing the stage with notable names including Grammy Award Winners Miguel, John Legend and Melanie Fiona. His work also includes studio or stage appearances with Wiz Khalifa, Ledisi, Roy Ayers, Snoop Dogg, SWV, Kardi’nal Official, Morris Day & the Time, Bilal, Eric

Roberson, Anthony David, Conya Doss, Raheem DeVaughn, Chuck Brown and a host of others. In 2011, Jon became a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, (also known as The Recording Academy,) the body responsible for the annual Grammy Awards.!!In 2008, Bibbs landed a partnership deal with San Francisco media startup, KyteTV. The partnership established Jon as a leader of independent artists leveraging social media and web media resources. Later in 2008 Jon launched his own social network, JB Live as a companion to the KyteTV platform. The JB Live network transitioned to become a platform exclusively for mobile devices in 2013 and continues to offer a rich social experience to Jon's fans that

enhances their appreciation for Jon's creative work as a musician. Jon continues to work in the media development arena, with several media products slated for release in 2014.!!Aside from his music and media ventures, Jon has found a remarkable niche in the field of education. As the owner/administrator of Richmond Prep, a private academy in Richmond, VA. Richmond Prep is one of Richmond's most economically accessible private schools, focusing on early literacy, character development and the arts. Jon is also a noted lecturer—particularly for his presentations on music and creativity, liturgical music, and musicology. In 2012 Jon received a Doctorate of Fine Arts, Honoris Causa from Virginia University of Lynchburg.!!

Dr. Bibbs is also the founder of the National Order of D.R.A.G.O.N.S, a co-ed fraternal order that is based on the philosophical pillars of knowledge, honor, achievement, political power, social change and economic independence for people of color. The organization has three regional hubs and nearly 200 members.!!Even with all of his successes, Jon maintains an endearing humility and continues to pour himself into his art, always acknowledging the efforts of his contemporaries and striving to provide an experience of showmanship like the pioneers who paved the way. Jon often says, "In everything I do, I want to give God the utmost glory. In Him I live, move and have my being.”!!Learn more about Jon at www.jonbibbs.com!

ICONIC MEN OF SOUL: !A PERFORMANCE SERIES BY RECORDING ARTIST JON BIBBS

“Highly recommended” - SoulTracks.com

Press!!SoulTracks.com “Ode to Old Flames” Album Review !!- By Howard Dukes!!Some people make music that falls into a listener’s musical wheelhouse. When that takes place – when there is convergence between an artist’s musical vision and the listener’s musical taste – the only thing that stands in the way of auditory bliss is execution. The only thing the listener has to worry about is whether these songs are any good.!!With Jon Bibbs’ Ode to Old Flames, the Virginia based musician, singer, producer, composer and educator made a record that has all of the elements that I like in my music – wonderful music, rich instrumentation, diverse selections that featuring rock, hip-hop, gospel influenced R&B, funk, blues and jazz. The record is also relatively short, eight tracks clocking at a little more than 38 minutes, even with the multi-layered and experimental “Red (Revisited)” coming in at 9:35.!!Bibbs’ execution on Old to Old Flames is on point. His pick of the classic “Spell on You,” the only remake on the record, speaks highly of Bibbs’ willingness to select an underused cut and to put some thought into how the tune is arranged. Bibbs opts for a lush arrangement that augments a slow and swinging melody with features strings and some Memphis style guitar solo work by Brandon Jarod.!!

“My Old Flame” is a homage to the kind of power rock love song that was all over Top 40 radio in the 1980s. Vocally, Bibbs proves to be an excellent translator of the up-tempo power rock ballad in a song that tells the story of a man who can’t stop thinking about that one girl.!!Bibbs pairs off with female vocalists on two duets. “Gone” is a mid-tempo retro soul cut featuring indie soul’s go-to female duet partner – Conya Doss. The track features a bass line that might remind some listeners of something from the Hi Records library. “Follow My Heart” brings Bibbs together with Alison Carney on a bit a brassy soul sporting a catchy hook. The track has the feel of a lost gem from the Motown vaults.!Yet, the highest of a series of very high points may very well be the deep funk ballad “Something to Talk About” and the magisterial “Red (Revisted).” The former, which finds Bibbs trying to convince his girl to take their private affair public, hits the listener in the face with a pumping bass line and an old school Hammond organ sound. The latter is a dreamy number with ephemeral lyrics that Bibbs delivers in a manner that has the feel of a brother making it up as he goes along. In short, it sounds authentic. The jazz-infused arrangement floats airily before the tempo changes and takes on more of a hip-hop vibe to accommodate a spoken word segment by Hamza Atoi.!!Ode to Old Flames harkens back to a time when vinyl forced artists to make the most of the limited amount of time they had to make a good musical impression. Bibbs uses less time than many of his contemporaries, but he also manages to say a whole lot more. Highly Recommended.!

Daily Press - “Jon Bibbs to salute Sam Cooke with show in Norfolk”!!By Sam McDonald!!August 15, 2013!!You've got to hand it to him. Jon Bibbs is an ambitious guy. The gifted singer and former Hampton University student is launching a tour that salutes greats of soul music: Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye.!!“These men are larger than life figures who have made massive contributions to what once was the most influential musical genre in the world,” said Bibbs, as quoted in a release from his website. “I’m excited about this series of shows and the opportunity to highlight some of the amazing work these men gave to the world.”!!The tour begins Aug. 24 at the 80/20 Burger Bar in Norfolk with a show that honors the music of Sam Cooke. It will continue with various East Coast dates through January 2014.!!Here's how the tour is described on Bibbs' site:!!*************!!Indie Recording Artist, Jon Bibbs, Presents Performance Series Honoring Iconic Men of Soul Music!!Series launches August 24th in Norfolk, VA!!Internationally lauded recording artist, Jon Bibbs, is presenting a series of

performances honoring some of the great male vocalists of the 20th century who created what we now recognize as soul music. The concert series, which will feature shows highlighting the music of Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye, is slated for stops throughout the east coast through January of 2014. !!“These men are larger than life figures who have made massive contributions to what once was the most influential musical genre in the world,” says Bibbs. “I’m excited about this series of shows and the opportunity to highlight some of the amazing work these men gave to the world.”!!There aren’t many singers in indie circles who are better equipped to present a performance series of this kind. Jon Bibbs, a former Hampton University history student, has long been one of the most respected voices of soul music in Virginia. For years he’s played stages throughout the country alongside some of the biggest names in the music world today. (Just this past February, Jon was the opening act for Grammy Award winner, Miguel in Phoenix, AZ.) Bibbs’ recordings have turned heads throughout the world as well. Last summer, his latest studio project “Ode to Old Flames,” enjoyed a week on both the iTunes and Amazon top 20 R&B charts.!!“What I plan to put forward are shows designed to appeal to music lovers of all ages, cultural backgrounds and levels of music appreciation,” Jon says. “I want these performances to be nights of music that bring folks together across all kinds of lines to celebrate and appreciate some great American music.” !!The Iconic Men of Soul series will launch in Norfolk, VA on August 24th with a concert

highlighting the life and music of Sam Cooke at 80/20 Burger Bar in the Ghent neighborhood. Doors will open at 9:30 pm and the show will start at 10. Admission is $7.00. !!Style Weekly - “Hard to Do”!!By Jerome Langston!!August 14, 2012!!There's nothing like a bad breakup to bring on the blues.!!At least Jon Bibbs got a hit album out of his heartbreak.!!"I was hurting," the Richmond native says over iced coffee at a cafe in Norfolk. "As I was writing this music, I was really thinking about that past relationship."!!"Ode to Old Flames" is an introspective, eight-song album that harkens to classic Motown and 1970s Al Green. That the album is so short adds to its aural appeal. "I just want to make eight great songs and leave it there," Bibbs told one of the album's producers.!!"Ode to Old Flames" may read like a sonnet, but the eight songs that make up the album are keenly self-analytical and full of revelatory detail about a failed relationship, balancing the nostalgic feeling in which the record luxuriates. On "Mistakes," for example, Bibbs sings, "I let my pride get the best of me, I simply lost control, hid behind defenses, wouldn't let my baggage go. ..."!!Building an album on the pain of failed love is a tradition that dates back to early blues records. So it was apropos for singer and

songwriter Bibbs to make the 1956 Screamin' Jay Hawkins composition, "I Put a Spell on You," the centerpiece of his new album. Aside from that classic, the Hampton University graduate composed all of the songs on the record. The album features notable production work by the likes of DeAndre Shaifer, Wellington Britt and Miguel Atwood Ferguson, while musicians Conya Doss, Alison Carney and Richmond native Skillz also are featured.!!Upon its digital-only release May 29, "Ode to Old Flames" cracked the Top 20 of the R&B album charts on both Amazon and iTunes. It was a remarkable achievement, especially considering that Bibbs' music is all independently released via his own self-named label. It's his fourth studio album and the first to chart nationally. This unexpected success has inspired other indie-soul artists, according to Bibbs.!!"They were really excited for me," he says. "A lot of my colleagues were like, 'You're repping for all of us right now.'" The album's success has sparked a range of new opportunities for Bibbs, including a new music video for the single "Follow My Heart," which premieres this month. He recently embarked on an East Coast tour, which kicked off at New York City's Joe's Pub on July 30, and makes a stop here at the Canal Club on Friday. He'll be backed by his reliable trio of musicians, 21 Pump Street.!!Bibbs lives in Newport News, although he's tied to Richmond as the owner and administrator of Richmond Prep, a Christian preschool and elementary school on West Grace Street. And he says he's excited to return to Richmond to perform: "It's a real blessing to be back in the 804." !!
