The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies, BA(AS), aims to prepare students for the MArch professional course and for the parallel Masters' courses in urban design, landscape architecture and architectural conservation. It seeks to equip students with the necessary technical skills and knowledge of architecture.

Courses offered include architectural design, architectural history and theory, building technology and visual communications.

One of the essential objectives of the curriculum is the development of a sense of community by project-based design. The studio design programmes are based on topical issues about contemporary and regional challenges facing our sustainable built environment, and encourage diversified and creative approaches to give exposure to different environmental, contextual and problem-solving challenges. It is the first degree needed to qualify as an architect; but also provides an excellent quality education that nurtures students with the abilities to enter a number of other related fields.

Short Description

The Bachelor of Arts in Conservation [BA(Conservation)] Degree offers problem-based and experiential teaching and learning at different levels of conservation, from building conservation to urban conservation, as well as the integration of old and new architecture. The Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, BA(US), is multi-disciplinary and studio-based with emphasis on design and multi-media communication skills and problem-based learning projects which equip students to become professionals in the built environment who can approach any problem from multiple perspectives. It will enable students to understand and face the challenges associated with cities and urban development in Hong Kong, China, and the world. It is recognised by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) in the Division of Planning and Development (http://www.hkis.org.hk/pdd/en/) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) (http://www.rics.org). Graduates from this programme can become professional or chartered surveyors in the planning and development disciplines of the HKIS or RICS, respectively. They can also become professional urban planners if they continue with the Master of Science in Urban Planning programme, the only programme in Hong Kong recognized by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) and Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). They are also eligible for professional postgraduate programmes in architecture, urban design, urban planning, conservation, landscape architecture, real estate, transport policy and planning, and housing management at the University of Hong Kong, which lead to respective professional qualifications, while also providing an interdisciplinary educational foundation for success in any field. The Department has over 30 years of experience in post-graduate training in urban studies and planning in the Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning (CUSUP) which was established in 1981 and restructured to the present department in 2008.

In addition, the programme will enable students to acquire broad knowledge of issues and methods in urban studies, including urban planning and design, urban policy and management, land development, real estate economics, sustainability, community development, public participation, urban renewal, conservation and place making. In the final year, students will do an independent research project on contemporary urban issues. As the field has an international scope, study abroad is encouraged, and there is an element of professional training through internships. The multi-disciplinary characteristics of the programme and the multi-dimension nature of urban issues will produce graduates who can approach any problem from multiple perspectives.

Upon meeting the prescribed admissions requirements, students may opt to pursue the five-year double-degree in BENG/BBA with the fifth year on self-financing basis.

Commencing from 2012-13, a quota of 120 will be imposed for BENG programmes offered by each department of the Faculty of Engineering. Students can choose their desired study programme after their first year of study, on the basis of academic performance.
