FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

JANUARY 22, 2016

JOINT STATEMENT ON THE FUTURE OPERATION OF THE 1920c ARTS AND WORKSPACE IN CHINATOWNThe owners of 1920c and Chinatown Community Development Center are pleased to announce the Citys approval of a process to bring the collaborative workspace at 950 Grant Avenue known as 1920c into compliance with Chinatowns zoning rules.

Last April, the Planning Department charged 1920c with violating the Citys ban on new office uses in Chinatown, applying this ban to so-called co-work offices. Since that time and with the support of CCDC, the owners worked to comply by expanding the nonprofit and community serving uses. More than two-thirds of the space is dedicated to community arts and educational activities primarily by its nonprofit organization, Pacific Atrocities Education In a decision finalized last week, the Planning Department upheld its general ban on co-work office uses in Chinatown but also recognized that 1920c had revised its operations to better comply with the neighborhood plan. The department has specified additional steps that must be completed in order to fully comply. We are encouraged by the Citys decision to allow 1920c to continue our operations as a creative arts show case and work space, said co-owner Jennie Chan. We are looking forward to expanding our collaborative and community serving work. Recent initiatives have focused on the Wall 1920C, a community gallery showcasing work from talented emerging local artists, and skill sharing as an integral part of the community." Our organization is pleased to support projects like Pacific Atrocities Education and 1920c that comply with our neighborhood zoning rules and find a niche in Chinatown, said Roy Chan, Planning Manager at CCDC. Our zoning rules need to be vigorously enforced to help create and protect community based services and business from displacement by office expansion. For further information contact:
