Important Message About
Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences
Conferences will take place on November 2nd, 5th and
10th. Conferences are for parents, teacher, and the stu-
dents. Teachers encourage you to:
be on time
have your questions ready
discuss questions with your child before you
come to conferences
We look forward to seeing you during conferences!
Join us on November 19th
for our annual spotlight of
student work!
This year’s theme is:
“STEM in Action”
As in past years at the STEM in Action Fair, each
student will showcase their scientific expertise
with a project or display at their grade lev-
el. From Kindergarteners as observers to Fifth
Graders as bee investigators, we will gather to
celebrate the Big IDEA at Weaver Lake. Each
grade level will have displays and investigations,
and we will also highlight the STEM aspects of our
curriculum. On November 19th, from 5:30 -
7:30 p.m., guests at the fair will have the chance
to visit each grade level
station, learn a little
about various topics, so-
cialize with friends and
families, visit the Book
Fair in the Media Center,
and sample some juice
box “nectar”. Please
come and spread your
wings to learn a little more about insects,
pollinators, and some of the engineering activities happening at Weaver Lake!!

Although we do not currently have an outbreak of
Head Lice at Weaver Lake, we have seen a few
cases this fall. Please report all cases of head lice
to the health office, so that we can track the cases
and hopefully prevent an outbreak from
occurring.
Facts about Head Lice
Head lice are tiny wingless insects that live
close to the human scalp and feed on human
blood. Head lice can lay eggs called nits, that
hatch and cause itching and discomfort; but do
not spread disease.
Anyone can get head lice.
People who get head lice are not dirty.
Head lice cannot fly or jump and they like to
stay on their host. They can crawl from a
person who has lice to another person if they
touch heads (ex. during play, sleep overs, camps
or sports activities).
Head lice cannot survive for very long off the
head and it is not common for head lice to
spread from contact with items such as clothing,
combs or toys.
Head lice can be seen in several different forms:
Eggs, baby lice and adult lice. Close inspection
is necessary. The eggs, also called nits, are tiny
teardrop-shaped eggs that attach to the hair
shaft. They may appear yellowish or white and
can look like dandruff but do not flake off or
move like dandruff. They must be removed
with a nit comb or pulled off between finger
nails. Nymphs, or baby lice, are smaller and
grow to adult size in 1-2 weeks. Adult lice are
the size of a sesame seed and tan to grayish
white.
If your child has head lice it is important to
notify the school and to provide treatment with
over the counter medication, prescription
medication or take your child to a professional
nit removal/lice treatment center. Repeat the
treatment according to manufacturer’s directions
and remove all nits checking daily for re-
infestation. Home remedies are not
recommended. Clean bed linens, recently worn
clothing, combs and brushes. Forty minutes in a
hot dryer will kill lice on pillows, stuffed
animals and other items that are not easily
laundered.
Please let me know if you
have any questions or
concerns.

November Lunch Menu Additions
Hello from the Volunteer Room! Things are defi-
nitely in full swing around school. Volunteers have
helped in classrooms, spread mulch, completed
busy bee projects, walked the nature trails, stuffed
envelopes, chaperoned field trips and more. Thank
you to all of the volunteers who have shared their
time and talents with us so far!
November’s big event, that will need LOTS of vol-
unteer help in setting up, is the STEM in Action
Fair on November 19th. That same week is our
Scholastic Book Fair held in the Media Center. All
volunteers who have completed the application pro-
cess will receive emails and sign up links from me.
Not in our volunteer pool yet? It is never too late
to become a volunteer! The application form is on
our website, available from me, and available as a
paper copy from the office. Volunteer opportunities
are wide ranging, both in their description and time
commitment. We accept youth volunteers and sen-
ior volunteers as well. If you are interested in kids
and education and want to make a difference – we
need YOU!

special pumpkin. Mrs. Deak spoke to the

ing and RE-WRITING many times to get
words just right.
WVLK NEWS— On Channel 70
Every school day morning, Weaver Lake
Elementary 5th grade students deliver a
news broadcast featuring birthdays, the
lunch menu, weather forecast, promotion of
special events, announcements, jokes and
special features. They also wish students to
“Have a ‘Great Learning Day!’” This is all
possible with the help of four diligent
“Production Managers”. They prepare the
cue cards, locate the daily weather forecast,
train and mentor new crew members and
work the green screen “magic” to produce
the live broadcast. Grace, Jacob, Caden and
Aarush are hardworking, creative and they
make it possible to have the broadcast oper-
ated entirely by students. All 5th grade stu-
dents will have a two week experience on
the WVLK news.

Magnet School Applications for the 2016-2017
school year are now being accepted by Northwest
Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD).
All new incoming students in grades Kindergarten -
5th have to apply through NWSISD and be accepted
to attend our school. Incoming students in grades K
- 4 who currently have a sibling attending Weaver
Lake Elementary will have sibling preference
through the NWSISD application/lottery process.
To be considered for sibling preference, when filling
out the application you must check the box,
“Check here if the applicant has a sibling currently
attending their first choice school,” and complete the
rest of the page. All students who apply during the
priority application period will be considered for
assignment before any students who apply after the
priority period.
The application can be found online at
www.nws.k12.mn.us or at the Weaver Lake home-
page, http://schools.district279.org/wvr/.
Important note:
The NWSISD magnet school priority application
will end December 31, 2015 at midnight. NWSISD
will hold a lottery on January 11 - 12 to fill the open
seats at Weaver Lake for the 2016-2017 school year.
All families that applied for their child(ren) to attend
Weaver Lake Elementary will receive a letter in
mid-January indicating if their child was selected for
a seat in the 2016-17 school year.
Informational meetings and tours are currently being
held at Weaver Lake. You can register for a tour
online at: http://schools.district279.org/wvr/. Go to
the Quick Links heading and click on Tours.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the
Northwest Suburban office at 763-450-1300 or the
Weaver Lake office at 763-420-3337.
Magnet School Application
Report cards will be coming home on December 9th
in the Wednesday Envelope. This is a time for you
to see how your child has been doing. Read the
report card together with your child. Ask about the
work they have been doing. Talk about the marks
and comments—tell your children how proud you are
with their hard work and progress. If you have
questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
Teachers and parents working together create a
strong partnership for student learning.
