Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may we experience

together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s new house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way.

Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our Worship service is

designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

Worship Information

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you

will find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available.

Leaders: Pastor Nathan Strutz and Vicar Jacob Haag Pianist: Lisa Hermanson Cantor: Kathi Appelt

Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front of the hymnal located under the pew chairs.

DISTRIBUTION ON COMMUNING

The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life and worship (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord's Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray. It would be un-loving of us as a congregation to invite visitors to the Lord’s table. We would not be so pre-sumptuous as to make any visitor take a stand with our doctrine and practice without first providing opportunity to explore the Bible's teachings with them.(1 Cor. 11:27-29). Our pastor would be happy to explore this unity with you, on the basis of God's Word, so that you might commune with us in the future.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Leader: For the Church on earth, that the people of God throughout the world might rejoice in the death and resurrection of Christ and live as those who have died and risen with Him in Holy Baptism, let us pray to the Lord: People: Lord, have mercy. Leader: For the nations of the world, that the Lord might grant humility and integrity to rulers, love for neighbor among citizens and faithfully bring forth justice according to His will and Word, let us pray to the Lord: People: Lord, have mercy. Leaders: For all those who partake of the Holy Communion today, that living as those who have been crucified with Christ in Baptism and raised up again, they might with repentant hearts receive His body and blood for the forgiveness of sins, let us pray to the Lord: People: Lord, have mercy. Leader: Almighty God, You raised Your Son from the dead, never to die again. We give thanks to You for all of the saints whom You kept in their baptismal grace throughout their living and their dying. We pray that as You have granted us to be born again by water and the Spirit, so also You would faithfully preserve our life in Christ by means of Your Word and Supper, that with all Your people we might rejoice in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come; through Jesus Christ, Your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. People: Amen. LORD’S PRAYER All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader: Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen.

THE WORD FIRST LESSON: ISAIAH 42:1-7 NIV 1“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope.” 5 This is what God the LORD says—the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 “I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 45 All: Refrain My heart is stirred by a noble theme*

as I recite my verses for the King. You are the most excellent of men,*

and your lips have been anointed with grace. Gird your sword upon your side, O Mighty One;*

clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. In your majesty ride forth victoriously;*

let your right hand display awesome deeds. Refrain Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;*

a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness;*

therefore God has anointed you with the oil of joy. I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;*

therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain

SERMON BASED ON: ACTS 10:34-38

JESUS IS THE ONE! Questions to consider while hearing the sermon: 1. How do we know Jesus is the One? 2. What is preaching? 3. How does Peter's sermon begin? 4. How different is that from us? 5. Why did God anoint Jesus? 6. Why was, "Jesus is Lord," an important confession? 7. With what did God anoint Jesus? 8. Jesus went around doing good and healing those under the power of the devil. Go deeper. 9. What's the only way we are acceptable to God? 10. What did God anoint you to do?

SECOND LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: ACTS 10:34-38 NIV 34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. VERSE OF THE DAY Leader: Alleluia. “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Alleluia. (Mark 1:11b)

Please stand in reverence to the words of our Lord

GOSPEL LESSON: MATTHEW 3:3-17 NIV

Leader: The Holy Gospel according to the third chapter of Matthew. People: Glory be to You, O Lord. 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” 4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jor-dan River. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spir-it and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gather-ing his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteous-ness.” Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise be to You, O Christ.

Page 9

CONFESSION OF FAITH NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.
