Founded in 2012 by Ed Steer, Niall Phelan and Laurence Smith, Sphere have swiftly established ourselves as the "go-to" recruiter for digital Media, Marketing and Creative talent.

A little bit about our peopleOur first employee, Ali Kennedy, joined us when we were two guys in a basement. Ali consistently bills over £200K and leads and manages his own team, while playing a key role in 2015 in helping shape and grow our business.

Our second hire, Joe Perry, more than doubled his previous best billing year in recruitment (6 years’ experience). Joe made in excess of £12K in bonus on 3 separate months in 2014 and over £20K in one month in 2015. Joe now leads a team of 4 people who recruit in his market in the UK and Europe.

Niomi Cowling, our first administrator now runs our marketing department!

Matt Demain joined Sphere from Gemini Search and, has increased his billing by over 75%. Matt has also been promoted into a management role.

Samantha Start joined Sphere from the Graduate Recruitment Bureau. Sam launched Sphere Graduate Recruitment, was promoted twice in 2015 and runs a team that will generate in excess of £500K in 2016.

Anton Greig joined Sphere from Eligo and more than doubled his billings in his first year at Sphere. Getting promoted along the way….

Lara Sheldrake joined Sphere from Salt as our Senior Business Development Manager and is now involved with our biggest spending accounts all around the world, as well as playing a leading role with both training and marketing at Sphere

Consultants

Our senior consultants and managers host weekly workshops on both recruiting and our specialist markets. Consultants are free to attend as many of these as they choose

Senior Consultants

All of our senior consultant receive bespoke training, through different channels

• Induction training: The Sphereway to £250K, delivered by our leadership team

• Peer to peer learning: Ongoing “opt in training” delivered to you and your peers by our leadership team

• Leadership development training: External training delivered by experienced and proven business leaders. Usually 4 – 6 sessions over a 3 – 6 month period

• Executive coaching: External executive coaching with a proven “high performance” coach

• Delivering training: All of our senior consultants are trained as trainers and are encouraged to lead training sessions with our consultants

Managers

All of our managers have the option to attend “Elite Future Leaders” and receive 1-2-1 executive coaching

All of our managers receive bespoke training, through different channels

• The Sphereway to team building: Delivered by our CEO, Ed Steer. 8 bespoke session on building high performance teams

• Leadership development training: External training delivered by experienced and proven business leaders. Usually 4 – 6 sessions over a 3 – 6 month period

• Elite Future Leaders: Attend one half day session, at Elite’s office, every six weeks. Each session is facilitated by a founder from the Elite team and an expert speaker

• Executive coaching: External executive coaching with a proven “high performance” coach

• Delivering training: Our management team are trained on how to train, and play a leading role in “Sphereway” training with our consultants it all levels within the business

Buddying, mentors and round tables

• All of our consultants in the business, who join as “graduates” or junior members of our team have a mentor – a senior consultant – who takes them out for breakfast or lunch once a month to offer guidance and support away from the desk

• If you join Sphere with more experience, you will be given a buddy. Your buddy will have a similar level of experience to you, be in another team, and will take you out for lunch, breakfast, coffee or a beer when you join the business. There main role is to help answer questions you may not want to ask your manager and to help you get to know the business and people outside of your team

• All of our senior consultants attend bi-monthly lunches with our CEO

• We hire a private dining room, pick an important part of the business, and give our senior consultants the chance to share their feedback and ideas with Ed, over a few glasses of wine and away from the office environment

Progress

• At Sphere, you are guaranteed to have two progress reviews a year. One in July and one in December

• Everyone at Sphere always has a pay rise target in place and knows what they have to do to achieve a pay rise and a promotion

Five Year Strategy

We created 6 teams:

In 2015 every member of our business contributed to our Five Year Strategy (2016 – 2021) 300

Our team spent over 300 hours on our Five Year Strategy

Team leaders were appointed to each team and in December 2015 each team presented their finding to the board

In March 2016 the board will present our strategy from 2016 – 2021 back to the business

As a result of the teams feedback we have already: improved our employee benefits, created an enhanced mentor and buddying scheme, hired for an internal recruiter and training manager, started to build an intranet, created a new career path (key account directorship), started to research locations to launch new offices

Every new member of our business will join one of our FYS teams and have your say on our plans for the future
