Dear visitors of Joensuu-Jukola, this year’s competition organised in Eno is

going to be 69th Jukola and 40th Venla re-lay. To celebrate the anniversary of Finnish independence, the Venla relay is named Finland 100 Venla Relay.

Kalevan Rasti ry has organised Jukola re-lay two times before in Pärnävaara in Liperi in 1982 and 2000. The competition centre of this year’s competition has been build at the Eno school centre. Harpatinvaara, which works as this year’s competition area, provides challenges for both professional athletes and hobbyists.

We have utilised an environmental pro-gramme, EcoCompass, for which we use for example biodegradable dishes, step up our waste sorting and prefer services provided close to us.

The numbers of orienteering hobbyists have been on the rise in the recent years. In Jukola it can be seen especially in the increased amount of working age hobbyist teams. There will be 16,500 orienteerers from Finland and abroad taking part in Jo-ensuu-Jukola. It is a testament to the strong position of Jukola relay as a prestigious sporting event.

Joensuu-Jukola 2017 is part of a chain of celebrations for Finland100, the anniversary of our independence. The theme of the an-niversary year is ”together” which fits well with the spirit of Jukola relay. The event done by volunteers is a massive endeavour for the organising club. Thus, I would like to thank everyone who is taking part in organising Joensuu-Jukola. You have made Joensuu-Jukola possible.

A major event like this is not possible wi-thout reliable associates. Therefore, I thank the landowners; our main supporter, the National Defence Forces; main partner in cooperation, the city of Joensuu; and the companies, who have supported the event as co-operatives and partners.

Joensuu-Jukola has the honour to get the patronage of the First Lady Mrs Jenni Haukio. The message of Jukola relay will be received by the President Sauli Niinistö. Our national writer Aleksis Kivi once wrote the following: ”What good fortune, to

wander through the great, open halls of the forest with a free heart. Let this always be a treasure for me!” On the 17th to 18th of June 2017, almost 17,000 orienteers from over 20 countries will gather to this treasure at the Joensuu-Jukola event. As the world’s largest relay orienteering competition, this event, which has been held since 1949, is both a mo-dern sporting event and one of the most ico-nic aspects of Finland’s summertime culture.

The whole of Finland takes pride in the long and honourable traditions of the Ju-kola relay competition. Due to Aleksis Kivi and his work, Seven Brothers, it is also an integral part of our cultural heritage. In its philosophy, execution and atmosphere, the Jukola relay sums up many of our 100-year-old country’s important values, such as the spirit of voluntary work and getting things done together, the importance of sport at all levels as a creator of well-being, as well as equality and respect for natural diversity.

The Finland 100 Venla orienteering relay will be held in Joensuu in honour of the 100-yearold Finland, celebrating the cen-tenary theme of “Together”. “Together” is a unique element of the Jukola relay, in which

world-class athletes and everyday exerci-se enthusiasts rub shoulders on the same track, watched by hundreds of thousands of viewers at the venue and through the media. The symbol of this shared experience is the magical start, when an ocean of headlamps leads the way into the gloom of the forest.

Voluntary workers bear almost all of the responsibility for arranging the Jukola relay. Each and every one of their contributions is critical to the success of this major event. I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to those in charge of the Joensuu-Jukola competition, the representatives of the Kaukametsäläiset Association, the Defense Forces, the Finnish Orienteering Federation and most of all to local volunteers for their work in ensuring the success of the Jukola and Venla relays.

I wish all participants in Joensuu-Jukola magical moments from the enchanting Fin-nish summer nights, the joy of sport and togetherness, and the radiant beauty of our wilderness. Greetings of the Mayor of Joensuu

We here in Joensuu are pleased to welcome 69th Jukola relay and 40

years old Venla relay here in Eno in Joensuu on the 100th year of Finnish independence.

This massive, international celebration of fitness and nature, a special case of sports, is like made for us. After all, we are the home region for the top athletes from va-rious sports, such as Kalevan Rasti, world’s best biathlonists and Finland’s best bas-ketball team, Kataja Basket. When a sports city invests heavily in the event organising know-how, the base for a great Jukola has been cast.

For the past few years, Joensuu has been characterised by busy construction sights and development of the city centre. Tho-se Jukola visitors who come all the way to the centre of the host town, cannot miss our biggest projects; a parking garage is being built under the market square and our pride and joy in the middle of Pielisjoki, Ilosaari, is being renovated into a leisure and event centre for everyone in the city. At the same time active villages and the peaceful countryside so valued by the lo-

cals, like in Joensuu-Jukola in Eno, are close to everyone.

The 16,500 participants and 40,000 spe-ctators of Joensuu Jukola get to enjoy an irresistible combination of vitality and quality of life!

I wish the best of luck and joyful sports weekend for everyone taking part in Fin-land 100 Venla relay and Jukola relay. I am certain that Joensuu-Jukola will be suc-cessful and unforgettable experience also for the spectators and the great group of volunteers.

On this celebratory centenary of Finland’s independence, the Finnish Army is plea-

sed to have been able to provide the partner support functions of the Finnish Defence Forces in the the organising of the 69th Ju-kola Relay and the 40th Venla Relay in Jo-ensuu-Jukola as implemented by the Kainuu Brigade in cooperation with other FDF units

Supporting the Jukola Relay is logical to the Finnish Defence Forces in that this tra-ditional relay competition fosters the skills fundamental for every soldier and brings together again thousands of reservists and enthusiasts keen on sustaining their natio-nal defence competence. Also hundreds of Finnish Defence Forces’ regular personnel participate in the competition. Apart from presupposing impeccable skills in map rea-ding and terrain utilisation, orienteering asks for independent decision making, ac-curacy and fitness -- all key to a soldier’s capability as well.

The Finnish Defence Forces support this event by, among other things, establishing and maintaining communicating networks for media productions and results clas-sification and providing material support

such as, for instance, setting up the village of around 400 military tents. The Dragoon Band will in turn celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence by its performan-ces in the event.

Everyone participating in Joensuu-Jukola is warmly welcome to visit the Finnish Army open air grounds for a versatile display of branches’ equipment from the Kainuu Brigade. Furthermore, an example of the contemporary state-of-the-art technology for conscript training, the virtual training environment features high-fidelity battle field simulators. Information will also be available on officer education as well as the Finnish Defence Forces as an employer.

As the two-year planning cooperation for this year’s Jukola Relay is again about to bear its fruit in the form of most memo-rable orienteering performances achieved at summer night, I wish all the competitors best of success in the terrain and specta-tors rewarding experiences on a fine sport discipline.

F inland 100 Venla relay is shorter and even fuller of surprises than the Jukola relay. The

meaning of the first leg and even of the very first controls is huge. Compared to many other years, the excellent location of Joensuu-Jukola competition center offers a fuller orienteering experience right from the start.

Stora Tuna OK won the Tvåmila relay (women’s Tiomila) in the spring and is a strong candidate to win in Eno as well. Their anchor Tove Alexanders-son is today’s best female orienteer in northern forest terrains.

The Swiss team ok norska, combined for the first time for Joensuu-Jukola, is also a strong candidate to take the victory. Their team con-sists of Silje Ekroll Jahren, Sarina Jenzer, Sabine Hauswirth and Simone Niggli.

Tampereen Pyrintö has a strong team in excel-lent shape. Their star runners are Venla Harju and Saila Kinni. Lotta Karhola took sixth place

in Finnish middle distance championships just a month before Joensuu-Jukola. All three are Tam-pereen Pyrintö’s own previous juniors. Pyrintö has a positive challenge of naming their first team runners. Even Simona Aebersold with four gold medals from youth world championships cannot be sure of her place in the team.

Year by year SK Pohjantähti has climbed closer to the top and is now ready to shine. Their an-chor will be Marika Teini, who lives in Joensuu. In the other legs one can find Anna Haataja, youth long distance world champion from last year, who didn’t fit Pohjantähti’s team last June.

Halden SK defends the victory from last year but with different runners. Göteborg-Majorna OK’s anchor Judith Wyder is on maternity leave. OK Pan Århus can’t make it to Venla relay with its best possible team. JUUSO METSÄLÄ

Kalevan Rasti has won the Jukola relay in 2004, 2005 and 2007 and in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Since the organizing club cannot participate in the race, there is plenty of room for challengers. On the other hand, the best team is sure to win, thanks to the talented course setters and the forested hills of Joensuu-Jukola.

The way to win the Jukola relay has been to send one these men in good position to the last leg: Thierry Guergiou, Olav Lundanes or Daniel Hubmann. This has worked ten times since 2004. In the era of these three great orienteers, there have been only three other winning anchors: Tero Föhr (Vehkalahden Veikot 2006), Valentin Novikov (Delta 2008) and Fabian Hertner (Kale-van Rasti 2012).

KooVee won last year’s Jukola. Again they have seven strong men. Daniel Hubmann is of course the anchor. There’s tough competition between the club members to get to the first team.

IFK Göteborg won the Tiomila relay. They will certainly have seven strong racers. Their anchor will be either Fredrik Bakkman or Eskil Kinne-

berg – both of them more than capable to seal the victory. A Swedish team hasn’t actually won since 1992.

Olav Lundanes, Fredric Portin and Fré-déric Tranchand of Paimion Rasti are simply phenomenal, but the runners of the last legs will be in a tight spot.

Tampereen Pyrintö has a young team, con-sisting of club’s own previous juniors, such as Aleksi Niemi, Anton and Elias Kuukka and Severi Kymäläinen. In order to win the club needs one more strong performance from Jarkko Huovila.

The best years of Halden SK have gone by, but one can never disregard their team. Magne Dæhli won the first world cup pursuit race in Lohja, so they do have a winning anchor.JUUSO METSÄLÄ

When Hennariikka Lonka and her son Aaro Asikainen discuss the

Jukola experience, they truly know what they are talking about.

In 1976 Lonka won the Venla run, which was a personal competition with mass start and no forking. After this she celebrated the victory of Venla relay in 1979 and in 1992.

Aaro was present in 1992, as four years old, Lonka recalls with a smile.

Aaro followed in her mother’s footsteps and won the Jukola relay in 2014 with Kale-van Rasti. These two sure can tell what the Jukola means to orienteers.

To win the Jukola is unique. I’m sure it’s the dream of every orienteer, Asikainen says.

Lonka says that the importance of the competition showed as special excitement.

I remember that no other competition made me so nervous. I didn’t stop feeling ill until I got the map into my hands, Lonka reminisces.

tickled about this year’s Jukola as well. Their role has changed from runner to organizer.

I have been an official in the two previous Jukolas organized by Kalevan Rasti. This year I’m very excited about my role as an official, since I get to be in the very core of the competition, namely in the changeover area, Lonka says.

Asikainen, Kalevan Rasti’s previous junior, has tested the routes of the Jukola. Almost a 100 kilometres have passed by.

Joensuu-Jukola will be an excellent com-petition to the top orienteers. On the ot-her hand, the terrain with lots of trails is suitable to everybody, says Asikainen, who will act as a commentator in the live radio controls. Eeva Parviainen

CONTENTS

Kalevan Rasti is an orienteering specia-lized sport club in Joensuu, that was

established in 1950. It concentrates on top orienteering, activities for youngsters, re-creational orienteering events and orga-nizing competitions.

In 2017, Kalevan Rasti will be organizing Joensuu-Jukola in Eno. Previously it has organized Jukolan viestis in Liperi in 1982 and 2000.

Kalevan Rasti has also won Jukolan viesti in the years 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2012-2014, and Venlojen viesti in 1979 and 1992. Its victories also include winning Tiomila in 1983 and 2010-2014 and the women’s Två-mila in 2001.

Kalevan Rasti is well-known for its exper-tise in mapping, course planning and coaching, which create the best orientee-ring surroundings in Finland to Joensuu.

The maps of Kalevan Rasti are made by Rauno Asikainen, Börje Vartiainen and Jussi Silvennoinen. Both Asikainen and Silven-noinen created the maps for the terrain parts for the WOC in Vuokatti. Silvennoinen also created the maps for Kuopio-Jukola and Luona-Jukola and is responsible of the mapping in Joensuu-Jukola. Asikainen is responsible of the maps in Lappee-Jukola.

Jussi Silvennoinen, Börje Vartiainen, Sa-muli Launiainen and Jarmo Tonder were responsible of the courses in the terrain parts of the WOC in Vuokatti.

The men’s coach in Kalevan Rasti, Antti Harju works as the youngster’s coach for the Finnish Orienteering Federation in Tam-pere. Aside from that, Harju also coaches the adults national team. The women’s coach, Jarmo Tonder also coaches the Fin-nish national orienteering teams youngs-ter’s talent group.

Orienteering for everyone in JoensuuKalevan Rasti organizes weekly open

skill practices. Together with Kontiolah-den Urheilijat, Liperin Taime, Joen Suunta and Selkien Sisu they organize recriational courses twice a week. For children, Kalevan Rasti’s Ketunlenkki provides a safe start for orienteering hobby. The safe courses are designed into easy terrains so that the shortest (1km), route can be walked even with trollers.

MAHDOLLISUUKSIA

Suunnistuksen suosio on kasvanut vii-me vuosina vahvasti: kuntorastikävijöiden määrä jatkoi kasvuaan ennätyslukemiin. Rajapyykki 400 000 suoritusta ylitettiin jo aiemmin. Näin Suomi kuntosuunnistetaan päästä päähän keskimäärin neljä kertaa vuoden jokaisena päivänä. Sillä on valtava kansanterveydellinen merkitys.

Suunnistaja kokee liikunnan iloa ja löy-tämisen riemua jokaisella rastivälillä ja rastilla. Oikean ja osuvan reitinvalinnan tekeminen saa myös aivosolut liikkeelle ja työpäivän mietteet jäävät ratamestarin laatimien tehtävien varjoon. Jokainen ras-tiväli on erilainen ja haastaa suunnistajan niin fyysisesti kuin älyllisestikin.

Luonto on liikuntapaikka, jonka suunnista-ja kohtaa ainutlaatuisena jokaisessa har-joituksessa, kilpailussa ja kuntorasteilla: keväällä ensimmäiset sulat paikat ja au-keavat puiden hiirenkorvat, kesällä kesäil-lan lämmin tihkusade tai hikistä pihkanis-kaa jahtaavat hyttyset, syksyllä kellastuva ruska tai sienimetsän satoisimmat piilo-paikat – nämä kaikki ja paljon muuta an-tavat ainutlaatuisia kokemuksia: metsäs-tä elämyksiä!

Luontoympäristö ei liikuta vain lihaksia, vaan metsässä mieli lepää. Tutkitusti jo vähäinen liikunta luonnossa saa mielen virkistymään. Luonnossa liikkuminen vai-kuttaa terveyteemme positiivisesti myös muilla kuin mielen mittareilla mitattuna.

Suunnistus on koko perheen liikuntalaji – voit suunnistaa kilpailujen lisäksi kun-torasteilla, suunnistuskouluissa sekä mo-nissa muissa suunnistusseurojen järjes-tämissä tapahtumissa. Seurat aktiivisine toimijoineen mahdollistavat suunnistus-elämykset vuosittain yli 50 000 suoma-laiselle, sillä metsässä ei ole valmiita rajaviivoja tai rastilippuja. Suomen Suun-nistusliitto saa Veikkauksen tuotosta tu-kea ja sen avulla edistämme suunnistus-toiminnan pyörittämisen seuroissa. Myös suunnistuskarttojen valmistusta tuetaan veikkausvoittovaroista.
