Dale / Maritime Services – Graduate Engineer, UK

Dale joined BAE Systems as a Graduate Engineer in its Maritime Services business in September 2016 after receiving a Master’s degree in Mathematics from The University of Nottingham.

For a long time, Dale has had a keen interest in the military. This interest was fostered during his time in the Air Training Corps from the age of 13 through to 18.

His first experience of BAE Systems came when he was accepted on to a summer internship within the Military Air & Information (MAI) sector of the business while studying for his Master’s.

During his 12-week internship, Dale worked as a Systems Engineer with the UK Lightning Integration (UKLI) team, providing engineering support to the MOD around the integration of ground-based logistics systems and processes used to support F-35 Lightning II operations and maintenance.

Following his internship, Dale successfully applied for a position on the Engineering Graduate Development Framework (GDF) as he knew BAE Systems would allow him to develop a career through which both his passions, mathematics and the military, would be catered for. Dale decided to apply for a position within Maritime Services as he thought that the P&Ts (Product and Training Services) sector of this business unit would provide plenty of opportunities for him to apply his mathematics skills.

BAE Systems’ GDF provides graduates with the opportunity to carry out four placements, each of which lasts six months. Dale was based in Cirencester for his first placement in 2016 as a Software Engineer, working on systems operated by Royal Navy maintainers/engineers to better control and streamline the maintenance of their ships.

For his second (and current) placement, Dale moved to Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where he primarily acts as a Digital Signal Processing Engineer for the Artisan 3D Radar system. Installed on 11 Type 23 frigates as well as the new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, Artisan 3D is capable of detecting objects as small as a tennis ball and travelling at three times the speed of sound more than 25km away.

In addition to his day-to-day role as a Graduate Engineer, Dale has thrown himself into the training and development opportunities offered by BAE Systems as part of the scheme.

Dale said: “BAE Systems is an amazing company to work for and the support provided to help one develop in their career is second to none. I have an engineering mentor who provides me with support to pursue my Engineering Chartership (CEng) through the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The company has also sponsored me to achieve my MIET (Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology) status, which is a key step towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.”

Dale attributes a lot of the progress he has made to the incredible support of his mentors and managers, who have been on hand to help whenever needed and encouraged him to take part in additional courses and extracurricular activities which have aided his personal development.

One of these included acquiring the role of Campus Manager for the University of Southampton, for which he is responsible for organising careers and STEM events to attract the next generation of BAE Systems graduates.

Looking ahead to the future, Dale is hoping to build upon his existing training and the incredible experiences he has and will be exposed to as part of his GDF, to work towards becoming a Project Engineering Manager within Maritime Services.

Rishi first encountered BAE Systems at a careers fair while studying for a Master’s degree in Physics at the University of Birmingham. During this time, he was selected to take part in a problem-solving challenge by the company; Rishi and his course peers were tasked with creating an innovative solution, to a real-life problem – delivering their work and findings as a presentation.

After graduating, Rishi, 24, researched potential employers which led him back to BAE Systems when he discovered the graduate scheme in the Electronic Systems business sector.

Rishi said: “I was looking at employers that would be able to further my skillset and push my development. The work at Electronic Systems seemed really cool and genuinely interesting, which spurred me on to apply.”

When he joined the company in 2015, his placements included working as a systems engineer on the LiteHUD® head-up displays programme. This see-through display allows pilots to view dash readings such as telemetry, altitude and speed directly in front of their field of vision – overlaid on the outside world – as opposed to looking down in a traditional aircraft. Rishi worked on testing the system hardware and mechanics, making sure different aspects of the software connected correctly to multiple aircraft parts.

In addition to this role, Rishi spent time working on flight controls – the hardware used by pilots to guide the aircraft. The bulk of his role involved lab work, where he tested equipment using real-life simulations to ensure the product worked correctly in a variety of different environments.

Rishi also had a stint with the cost estimation team, where he worked on bid estimating – giving him an insight into the financial side of the business.

Rishi said: “My day-to-day role has been very varied which I thoroughly enjoy, no two days are the same. It’s great that I get to interact with many areas and disciplines of the business.”

In addition to his work responsibilities, Rishi has supported work experience students as a part of the Graduate Developing You course (GDY). In this extracurricular role, Rishi became a cohort leader, which developed his managerial and coaching skills.

Rishi said: “The people-support within BAE Systems is great. My manager on the LiteHUD programme has been my mentor since day one, and has been really helpful in coaching me and developing my knowledge; providing me with constant feedback that has aided my progression. As a whole, BAE Systems creates an environment that is keen to provide employees with opportunities to further develop themselves.”

Katherine / Applied Intelligence – Consulting Early Careers, UK

Katherine, originally from Bath, joined Applied Intelligence at BAE Systems in a Consulting Early Careers role in the latter stages of 2016 after studying for a degree in Chemical Engineering.

During her four years completing an Undergraduate and Master’s degree at the University of Birmingham – including spending one year abroad in Melbourne – Katherine undertook a series of internships in the oil and finance industries to gain experience, but later decided she wanted to pursue a different path.

Having always been fascinated by the defence industry, Katherine began searching for jobs online and came across the BAE Systems Early Careers Schemes with Applied Intelligence – the cyber security arm of the business.

What appealed about the role to Katherine was getting to consult for a range of high profile clients at the cutting edge of cyber security technology, whilst also experiencing a variety of roles and teams throughout the two years, which offered a variety of placements within a chosen speciality.

After being successful through the interview process, Katherine joined BAE Systems Applied Intelligence in October 2016 – with her first placement as part of a Government client team for a cyber security programme based in Milton Keynes. Her role was focussed on Business Change, and was part of just one of 23 teams from BAE Systems working with the client to improve the security of the organisation.

Katherine spent six months in this placement, helping to deliver the final stages of a large-scale two-year project for the client – something that she says gave her a real sense of achievement when delivered.

In March 2017, Katherine moved back to London for her second placement, based in the Applied Intelligence offices in London Bridge. Katherine’s new role saw her offer internal support to the National Security client group within a Junior Project Management role – helping the team deliver its vital work and supporting with resourcing, finance & reporting.

After three months, Katherine moved to a client-facing role within the same National Security group. She now splits her time between project management and driving Business Change for her clients, as a vital part of a large team of 16 people.

Katherine has also chosen what Applied Intelligence calls her ‘Aspirational Practice’ – which will see her specialise in Business Consulting, meeting guest speakers and area specialists to hone her skills further.

Katherine has elected to be part of the Graduate led Early Careers Practice team, which oversees the key aspects of the Graduates experience within Applied Intelligence. She is part of the Pre-Joining & Recruitment team which supports the induction of new Graduates into the business. Katherine and her team support a two-day induction process for the new Graduates joining Applied Intelligence. As part of Katherine’s involvement in this team she has helped to shape the content of the Early Careers induction, based on her own experiences and insight.

Katherine has thoroughly enjoyed her time at Applied Intelligence, it has been exciting and rewarding and she is looking forward to developing her skills and enjoying a successful career within BAE Systems.

Finance underpins everything we do – so it’s vital that we find and nurture our future finance leaders now. That’s why we created the Finance Leader Development Programme (FLDP).

The FLDP is our five-year graduate entry scheme, designed specifically for high-calibre individuals with the potential and determination to make a real difference in senior finance roles and to become BAE Systems’ finance leaders of tomorrow.

As a graduate on the FLDP, you can expect a role that offers significant responsibility and exposure from the outset. In the first three years, you’ll complete three 12-month placements at a range of geographical locations across the UK, gaining extensive experience of financial accounting, management accounting and project accounting whilst also completing your CIMA qualification. This will take great commitment from you, but we’ll offer you unrivalled support. BAE Systems is a CIMA Premier Partner, our CIMA training is delivered through BPP, a leading training provider, and we offer a comprehensive study package.

After successfully completing the first three years of the scheme and achieving the CIMA qualification, the FLDP continues with a two-year senior accountancy position, offering managerial experience, thus helping you to develop the skills you will require to move into a leadership role within our dynamic finance arena at the end of the five-year programme.

During your placements you’ll gain experience in:

Financial AccountingUsually based in central finance, this role will entail working quickly and accurately under the pressure of tight deadlines. At the end, you can expect a solid foundation in core accounting.

Management AccountingYou’ll be involved in a wide range of activities from the development of strategy and long-term business planning to assessing operational efficiency and inventory management.

Project AccountingYou’ll provide financial support to the decision-making process. Ensuring robust contract status reporting by working closely with the project delivery team will also be key, as will understanding the systems being used and constructively challenging completion estimates.

As you progress, you’ll soon understand why the FLDP is championed so enthusiastically by finance members and Board Directors alike.

Learning and developmentWe will encourage and support you to reach your full potential. You’ll receive world-class training and support. The FLDP is our key to developing future finance leaders for BAE Systems. The programme will give you the tools to succeed, you will undertake regular performance and development appraisals and receive a senior mentor to provide you with support and guidance along the way.

In order to maximise the development of talent, we use the 70-20-10 Development Model: the most effective way to plan development is to focus 70% on experience; 20% on exposure; and 10% on education.

We provide regular FLDP workshops, an annual conference, superb e-learning facilities and stretch assignment opportunities. You will have access

to our Knowledge, Skills and Competency Gap Analysis tool and you’ll receive a development 360 feedback report on an annual basis.

Once you’re into your fourth and fifth years of the programme and are CIMA qualified, you will receive an allocation of 20 days for training and development, some of which will be used to attend our well established People Management Toolkit course and Professional Development Centre, with the remaining days being tailored to you as an individual.

After five years on the FLDP, you will be a highly skilled member of our finance community. That’s a huge benefit in itself. But, as you go along, you’ll find out just how dedicated the company is to making sure you have every possible support and opportunity to learn more.

Alexandra / Finance Leader Development Programme (FLDP), UK

After graduating with a Master’s degree in Accounting and Finance at London School of Economics, Alexandra was keen to pursue her passion, and researched companies to further her career in finance, which led her to BAE Systems.

Alexandra was successful in her application to the Finance Leader Development Programme (FLDP), joining the five-year scheme in August 2014.

Alexandra, originally from Athens, said: “When I graduated, I knew that finance was a subject area I was really passionate about and where I saw my future career path. After extensive research, the FLDP scheme at BAE Systems really stood out as the perfect next step for me, due to BAE systems being at the forefront of innovation within a fascinating industry, and because of the vast range of opportunities the scheme offered”.

The course consists of three one-year placements across different finance areas and business units, followed by a final two-year stint in a senior accountancy position.

During her first year, Alexandra was based in Preston with the Finance Shared Services Team, which saw her gain an overview of the financial team and understand the various business units in BAE Systems.

For her second year, Alexandra then headed to Warton, where she was based with the Military Air & Information (MAI) business unit. Here, Alexandra was part of the Finance Central Costbase Team, which oversees and regulates expenditure within MAI.

Alexandra is currently undertaking her third placement, based at RAF Marham in Norfolk. Here, Alexandra works as a Project Accountant on the ATTAC programme (Availability Transformation: Tornado Aircraft Contract) with the Ministry of Defence to maintain and support the RAF fleet of Tornado aircraft.

The ATTAC programme maximises aircraft availability and significantly reduces support costs, saving millions over the course of the contract. Her role as Project Accountant sees Alexandra work closely with senior management and interact with customers, an aspect of the job she enjoys.

Aside from her daily role, Alexandra is an active member of the FLDP Council, a scheme which supports and mentors junior FLDP graduates. Moreover, she supports Careers Fair activity, to help deliver and promote FLDP courses to young people.

Speaking of her time so far with BAE Systems, Alexandra said: “BAE Systems and the FLDP scheme in particular offers an excellent support network. My mentor has given me valuable career advice throughout my time on the scheme and the FLDP management team has assisted me constantly. It’s genuinely impressive the amount of investment BAE Systems puts into its employees, by providing endless opportunities to develop and ensuring that world-class training is offered”.

Alexandra has two-years remaining on the FLDP scheme and hopes to continue progressing within BAE Systems, working towards her goal of becoming a senior finance leader.

There are two streams within the Sigma programme – Business and Engineering. Each stream is tailored to enable you to develop the core skills and behaviours to be a business or engineering leader of the future.

This unique programme has only a few places available each year, which is why we carefully consider who we recruit; we need individuals with the potential to lead our company into tomorrow. That means you’ll need to be able to build strong relationships with people quickly, working collaboratively to get the most effective results.

The Sigma Leadership Programme offers no blueprint or structured path to follow, so you’ll also need to be driven and self-motivated to succeed.

Arranging your own roles, which will typically last between 6–12 months, you might find yourself undertaking an international assignment, or working at one of our customer sites. Through these hands-on, intensive placements in different businesses and projects you’ll rapidly gain a diverse range of experience, knowledge and skills. You’ll also have accountability and responsibility to make a difference to our businesses.

Upon completion of the Sigma Leadership Programme, you’ll be expected to take on a substantive role at an executive level.

Sigma Leadership Programme (Sigma)

The Sigma Leadership Programme is our three-year fast-track programme packed full of broad and deep experiences – across multiple business areas – that help aspiring leaders to succeed.

Did you know? Trusted. Innovative. Bold. These are our core values. They help shape who we are as a company.

Thomas / Sigma Leadership programme, UK

After graduating with a BSc in Business, Tom spent two years working in Business Development for an information security company. However, he always had an interest in the aerospace and defence sector and after researching companies, he decided to apply to BAE Systems based on the reputation of the business and the support offered on the graduate scheme.

Tom joined the BAE Systems GDF graduate scheme in 2013, working for the company’s Land business. In this role he worked across various commercial roles in contract negotiation. He spent much of his time ensuring delivery against customer requirements, pricing competitive contracts and winning new business for the company. Tom also undertook an international secondment to the company’s Saudi Arabian business whilst on the graduate scheme and gained valuable experience of the air sector and working in a foreign environment.

After completing his graduate scheme, Tom successfully applied to join BAE Systems’ Sigma leadership programme – where promising individuals are fast-tracked into leadership roles through a three-year development programme.

During the Sigma programme, Tom took up positions across the company’s Military Air and Information (MAI) business based in Warton as a Commercial Manager, which saw him take part in a secondment in Turkey. There, he worked with a Turkish partner company, helping to develop relationships with the Turkish Customer and negotiating contracts between the parties.

Tom said: “One thing I’ve really enjoyed throughout my graduate scheme and the Sigma scheme is that as a truly international business BAE Systems has many opportunities to work abroad. It’s been amazing to experience other cultures in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, to meet new people, try new foods and discover new ways of working.”

Tom’s second role on the Sigma programme was as a Project Manager in the Maritime Naval Ships business unit based in Glasgow.

He oversaw a critical stage of the build of an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) the company was building for the Royal Navy. His tasks included establishing a work schedule, ensuring the ships teams delivered to that schedule, building a risk register, and putting actions in place to mitigate those risks ahead of the successful ‘float-off’ of the ship. Tom said: “Seeing the ship enter the water for the first time was a proud moment – it was a culmination of a lot of hard work by the team.”

As a result of Tom’s work in Land and Naval Ships, he and his teams received recognition in the company’s internal Chairman’s Awards. Tom said: “Anytime I’ve asked for responsibility the company has been willing to offer the opportunity to let me demonstrate my competency. It’s confidence-inspiring to know that as an employee you are trusted to be able to rise to the challenge. And when you perform well, it’s appreciated and rewarded. The company feels like a true meritocracy.”

Rumzah / Naval Ships – Operations Industrial Placement, UK

Rumzah first encountered BAE Systems as part of her Mathematics degree with the University of Hertfordshire, when researching potential employers for her placement year.

Rumzah, from West London, said: “After completing two years of University, I had the option to study abroad or to work a year in industry, and I chose the latter. When I researched companies that utilised my skills in Maths, provided opportunities to develop, and had countless positive reviews on leading graduate information websites, it was clear that BAE Systems was the perfect fit for me”.

Following her successful application for BAE Systems’ Industrial Placement scheme, Rumzah was keen to develop her interpersonal and communication skills, within the Operations team Naval Ships business in June 2016.

Rumzah added, “I was quite shy before joining BAE Systems and had no previous experience of the working world. This pushed me to pursue a placement that would develop my people skills, which led me to undertake an operations role to bring me out of my comfort zone”.

During her time on the placement scheme, which comprised of three four-month placements, Rumzah’s first placement was with People Capabilities, which focuses on improving employee engagement and satisfaction across the Naval Ships workforce.

Rumzah then helped to run and deliver the Business Improvement training course for her second placement, a two-week training course designed

to develop employees’ personal and presentation skills, teaching them how to identify and solve potential problems within given business units. Her final placement involved improving the efficiencies of staff within facilities and operations.

Whilst on placement, Rumzah worked closely with engineers each day and gained valuable exposure to their roles, whereby she developed an interest for Systems Engineering. After it appealed to her technical side, Rumzah sought to gain further understanding of Systems Engineering through organising meetings with senior engineers and peers. With no engineering background or experience, Rumzah succeeded in securing a three-month Systems Engineering internship with BAE Systems’ Naval Ships from June to August 2017.

The Systems Engineering internship involved Rumzah working with the Fluid Dynamic Modelling team, which models all piping in the Royal Navy Type 26 frigate, primarily concerning water cooling systems for the engines.

Aside from her day-to-day role, Rumzah is also a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ambassador, which involves her visiting local schools, colleges and career fairs across Glasgow, to raise awareness and provide information on STEM subjects.

Rumzah is also an active member in two employee resource groups, concerning LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) and BAME (Black, Asian, and minority ethnic) communities, which promotes diversity within BAE Systems and provides employees with an outlet to discuss and share thoughts.

Speaking of her time so far at BAE Systems, Rumzah said: “The support from all my peers and colleagues has been overwhelming. The mentors and colleagues are all truly passionate about seeing you progress and develop both personally and professionally. There were so many opportunities open to me during my placement year, which has helped give my career the best possible start”.

Rumzah completes her internship in September 2017 and will return to Hertfordshire to enter the final year of her Mathematics degree. Rumzah is keen to return to the Naval Ships business unit upon completing her degree, noting that she plans to apply for the Systems Engineering graduate scheme.

We have sites in Portsmouth, Cowes on the Isle of Wight, Filton near Bristol, Chelmsford, and Hillend in Scotland.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Maritime Services as the work at all our sites is helping the Royal Navy prepare for the arrival of the giant Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. By joining Maritime Services you could have the chance to help to develop the engineering support required for the carriers throughout their operational life.

If you want to be part of our future working in partnership with the Royal Navy then a career in Maritime Services awaits you.

“ I’m currently helping to create a new project performance system for ship repair and maintenance programmes at Portsmouth Naval Base. I really enjoy working to support the ships, and knowing that the work I do helps the Royal Navy in its operations inspires me to come to work every day.”

Land (UK)

Land (UK) offers several graduate opportunities across its main sites each year. We design, manufacture, upgrade and support combat vehicles and munitions products for a global customer base. With over 1,700 employees operating across ten sites, our biggest asset is our people. We are experts on combat vehicles and munition products used by Armed Forces across the world, extending and developing their capabilities to meet current and future requirements.

The munitions we provide include small arms ammunition, medium calibre, mortars, artillery shells, tank ammunition and warheads.

Our range of vehicles includes the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, Warrior infantry fighting vehicle, Terrier combat engineer vehicle and military bridging systems.

We’re looking for people with drive, passion and determination to help us provide the equipment our troops rely on everyday.

“ I really enjoy the flexibility of my work at Land (UK). In my first six months here, I was given the opportunity to help design and build an unmanned ground vehicle, present the product to the customer, and test it at a secure weapons testing facility. Knowing that I have a role to play in the design of products that could save the lives of troops on the front line pushes me to be the best I can be.”

Naval Ships

As an island nation, the UK has a proud history of world-class naval engineering. As part of our UK Maritime Sector, Naval Ships designs, builds and delivers complex warships and combat systems, and you could play a vital role in its future.

Our graduate opportunities span from engineering to project management to operations, and supply chain. You could join us as a naval architect and help shape the future of the fleet for a generation to come or, as a software engineer, programming the systems that sailors will depend on.

We’ve got great projects for you to work on, like the Royal Navy’s new Offshore Patrol Vessels or the Type 26 Global Combat Ship – a highly capable and versatile multi-mission warship designed to support anti-submarine warfare, air defence and general purpose operations anywhere on the world’s oceans.

Our combat systems are in operation in more than 20 countries around the world and this technology is vital in providing crew members with the information and capabilities they need to operate effectively, whether protecting the world’s shipping lanes or providing humanitarian relief.

We’re always looking to the future and we are committed to investing in our people to help them realise their career potential in an exciting and vibrant environment, working with the best talent in the industry.

“ The real selling point of working for Naval Ships is being part of a team that will shape the future of the Royal Navy for years to come. I’m very fortunate to work with multiple partners on the Type 26 project. This creates a great atmosphere of collaboration and inclusion.”

Submarines

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

Today we are the prime contractor in the Astute programme and the UK’s only designer and builder of nuclear powered submarines – one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges. The first three submarines in the class, HMS Astute, HMS Ambush and HMS Artful, are now in service with the Royal Navy and the final four Astute class submarines are at various stages of construction at the Barrow site.

We are also the industrial lead for the Dreadnought programme, the Royal Navy’s next generation of nuclear deterrent submarines. Construction of the first of four submarines, named Dreadnought, began last year.

Our Submarines business employs approximately 8,500 people and spends more than £300M per year with over 1,000 direct suppliers – 85 per cent of whom are based in the UK.

“ It’s amazing working for a company that builds world-leading products like submarines. I never thought in a million years that I would get the chance to go on an actual nuclear submarine and be discussing the design, build and launch of it as part of my job.”
