Tackle business critical issues.

Explore

Our expertise crosses almost every industry – and when there are shifts and changes, clients look to us for advice on industry trends and cross-industry experience.

We’re uniquely placed to deliver lasting value to our clients and win in the market. And that’s why we’re the ideal place to accelerate your career and your future.

Our project teams are typically small, with four to six strategy consultants. This means that you’ll be given the opportunity and skills to make a real impact and have responsibility from day one.

We also want you to get international experience and exposure, and our London trained strategy consultants are some of the most sought-after in the network.

You’ll get the opportunity to work on international projects, and if you’re looking for a more immersive experience, we offer six-month to two-year secondments in over 30 countries on six continents.

Two market-winning teams

We organise ourselves in two market-winning teams – Corporate Strategy and M&A Strategy. We work together to bring the best to our clients, and we offer a unique, powerful, and distinctive combination of capabilities that allows us to develop and deliver world-class strategies.

The two teams share many of the same attributes – fast progression (aim to reach Manager in under four years), working in small teams, international opportunities, the chance to do MBAs, and flexible start dates. Pay is exactly the same for graduates. The work mix does however vary between the two teams, and there’s a difference in the way we work based on the clients we work with.

As a graduate you’ll be aligned to one of our two teams, and after a few years you could experience working in both, as we often resource projects together, and provide the opportunity to transfer between teams.

8

You’ll have the option to select a preference for one of these teams when applying, but we encourage you to make an open application.”

Corporate Strategy team

Corporate Strategy separates business success from failure. As part of our team of problem solvers and creative thinkers you’ll put your analytical skills to the test, creating strategic solutions to address the complex challenges faced by business leaders. We work across all industry sectors, where no two problems are the same; variation is at the core of what we do. Our pragmatic, strategic solutions focus on execution to help clients build capabilities to give them the advantage they need, helping to take them from strategy through to execution.

For you this means –

International exposure – we resource projects globally, meaning international exposure on projects. We also offer secondments at any of our international offices

Projects – these can last between a few weeks and months, enabling you to work on projects across many different industry sectors in your first year to quickly build your exposure and experience

Working at clients’ offices – you’ll often be working closely with the client at their offices in the UK or international locations.

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Strategy teamM&A is a fundamental part of how companies seek to win in their markets and we help clients make the right M&A decisions. With us, you’ll get to know a company from the inside out, and combine razor-sharp analysis with creative problem-solving. Strategy and M&A go hand-in-hand, so while we’re often assessing companies and markets in the context of a transaction, many of our projects go beyond M&A, helping clients develop innovative strategies to deliver revenue and profit growth.

For you this means –

International exposure – in addition to overseas work and other secondment opportunities, we’ve recently started a scheme for some of our graduates to do a six-month secondment in our New York office after 18 to 30 months on-the-job

Projects – are typically three to six weeks long, meaning that you’ll do about ten projects across different sectors in your first year, broadening your experience

Working from London – you’ll get opportunities to visit and work at client offices, but most of your time is likely to be based in our London office.

Corporate Strategy

I joined three years ago as an Associate as part of the Corporate Strategy team. Since then, I’ve been on a wide range of projects; strategy diagnosis for a beverage packaging company, a new market assessment for an automotive parts supplier, an innovative operating model design at a bank; they’ve all been so different.

On each project, I don’t just get to learn about the client and the industry, but also about how businesses and people work. It’s been such an interesting journey and I feel my perspectives have broadened as a result.

As a Senior Associate, I’ve started to own workstreams and manage others in the team which presents different challenges to when I first started as a consultant. The work is often fast-paced which I really enjoy as you never get bored!

What’s great about Strategy& is that you’re surrounded by so many talented people who make it such an inspiring place to work. I’ve learnt so much from the people I’ve worked with, especially as they’ve all been happy to spend time with me and help me learn. Through regular mentoring, feedback and general tips, support is always there when you need it. We have a great community and I always look forward to Fridays too when everyone comes back to the office from the client sites.

A global telecoms provider with customers across Europe and Asia engaged us to develop and implement a full digital strategy, covering all aspects of their business. From technical operations to customer service, from the products they offered to how they marketed and sold those in different markets.

Whilst the client knew they faced major threats from a rapidly changing digital environment, they also recognised the potential opportunities – if they could capitalise on them. We assembled a team from across Europe and supported the client to define the digital strategy they needed.

We worked with the client to set ambitious targets: 80% of all customer interactions to be done digitally, reduction in call centre traffic by 70% and at least 50% of all sales done digitally by 2020. Working with each of their in-country teams, we made local plans and set out how each country could implement the global vision.

Having defined the strategy and set the goals, we moved into implementation and the delivery of this ambitious change programme. We brought on board change management and programme delivery experts to work at a global level, driving forward the digital strategy around the world.

M&A Strategy

I joined the M&A Strategy team straight after graduating from my Master’s, and since then I’ve been working on projects in various industries such as retail, leisure and consumer goods, industrial products and services, and technology. I was initially interested in strategy consulting because I was looking for a dynamic environment and I wanted to surround myself with smart, friendly and well-rounded people. Indeed the M&A Strategy team has met my expectations!

The thing I like most about my job is the variety it offers both in terms of exposure to different sectors but also in terms of teams and roles. I find the work we do thought-provoking and challenging, and since I joined I have experienced a steep learning curve. The team has been by-my-side since the first day, making sure

I get all the support I need and making me feel welcomed. I’ve been learning not only through the various training sessions provided as part of the graduate induction, but also from my teams, as I found myself in incredibly diverse groups of people and working with individuals in different roles, from partners to interns.

Amongst the highlights of my experience have been the social events, which helped me build really close friendships, especially with the people from my intake. I am currently part of the ‘Ministry of Fun’, a committee responsible for organising the social activities for the M&A Strategy team such as an amazing Christmas party, Friday drinks, ‘Away Days’ and Wimbledon events.

When a UK cinema client was considering international expansion by acquiring a European chain, we were hired to conduct a review of the business.

We worked closely with the client’s CEO and senior team to understand their considerations, and evaluated a set of strategic opportunities for the business which included pricing and further site roll-out.

Our work helped inform the client about the company’s competitive positioning and its markets. While the project was led from the UK, we brought in people from teams located in the company’s local markets, which was extremely valuable to the client as it helped us to really understand market and customer dynamics

at a local and regional level. We researched trends in admissions and pricing, and analysed how a myriad of factors could explain year-on-year volatility as well as longer-term trends.

Based on this work, we built a model to project which films would drive admissions for the upcoming years and how strong we expected the performance of the local cinema industry to be. This was invaluable in helping the client come to a decision about the company’s future potential for growth. We also analysed other trends such as the impact of piracy and online streaming.

The client highly valued our advice, which gave them both the qualitative insights and the rigorous supporting data they needed to make the best decision possible for their business.

Corporate Strategy

Upon joining Strategy& I embarked on a steep learning curve, with structured training courses and rapid on-the-job learning. Two years in and as a Senior Associate, I’m now taking on greater project responsibility, developing client relationships and helping others perform complex analysis, both during engagements and through informal coaching sessions.

One of the main reasons I enjoy consulting is the level of exposure you get working directly with partners and senior client staff. It’s a great way to build your network both cross-industry and cross-geography – I’ve been lucky enough to work in a range of sectors in locations

as diverse as New York, Russia and Norway. I’m now looking at secondment opportunities at our offices in other countries.

Finally, despite the busy schedule, I always try to join Friday drinks in the office as well as some of the many other extracurricular activities going on. For example, this year I’m captain of the London contingent travelling to the Strategy& Soccer Cup in Madrid. We’ve had so much interest that we’re having to enter four teams – hopefully one of them can bring the Cup home!

With so many ways to make payments these days, the payments value chain is becoming increasingly disrupted. A leading UK bank took action to act on this threat, approaching us to help them develop a new payments strategy and a strategic operating model to support this.

We first undertook a market scan of the payments landscape, assessing competition from traditional banks, challenger banks, technology providers and start-ups. From this, we were able to identify areas of the value chain where the bank was under threat and project the potential revenue loss to the payments business over a five-year period.

After assessing potential threats, we worked with them to develop a business strategy to both protect the bank’s revenue, and provided options for looking at how they could capitalise on new technology to enable future revenue growth. We tested this, along with the supporting target operating model, with their key stakeholders, including the CEO.

We continued to support the payments business post-delivery of the strategy to the bank’s board, developing a prioritised implementation plan which we ultimately handed over to them to enact.

M&A Strategy

After studying Economics at university, I spent a year in Spain where I had the opportunity to think about what I’d like to do long-term. Having looked at many different jobs, I was drawn to strategy consulting roles, attracted by the intellectual challenge, responsibility from early on, and the opportunity to answer some of the most difficult questions an organisation faces. In particular, the M&A Strategy team really impressed me as everyone seemed enthusiastic about their job, smart and approachable.

Having been a part of the team for two years now, I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to work across different sectors. My role on a project is to understand, question and test a business based on the market trends, competitive dynamics, customer attitudes and growth drivers of the business plan by conducting primary and secondary research and analysis before explaining my findings to the client.

My favourite project to work on so far was for a client who wanted to sell a TV shopping channel. I enjoyed working closely with the executives of the company to write and launch a survey for TV shoppers to understand the attitudes, behaviours and perceptions towards our client versus competition. What you learn varies from project to project, as do the hours, but I still find time to play water polo, recently going to Poland to play for Scotland in my first international tournament.

Since joining the organisation, I’ve also been impressed by how much time it invests in its graduates, from the training when you join, to periodic graduate training in your first year, as well as ad-hoc sessions. They also invest a significant amount of effort in providing opportunities for graduates; I recently returned from a six-month secondment to New York, living in Manhattan, which was a brilliant experience.

When one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies announced its intention to divest a major business unit, our FTSE 100 client was interested.

The target business specialised in the manufacture of ingredients for high-strength opiate painkillers. Our client had a solid understanding of the UK market, but limited knowledge globally. They asked us to help them understand some of the key risks and opportunities in territories around the world.

Our work focused on six products across ten countries on four continents. We reviewed dynamics around prescription volumes,

pricing trends, regulatory developments and the competitive environment, to answer these questions: Why do doctors prescribe these particular drugs? How many suppliers provide the ingredients, and how do they differ? What’s the likelihood of regulatory tightening? Who pays, and how much?

We provided the client with a detailed review of each of the business drivers and issues they should consider. These and other insights helped the client to refine their understanding of the global market and tailor their thinking on what to bid for the business.

What we look for

We look for a rare combination of razor-sharp intellectual ability, commercial awareness, analytical skills, flexibility, teamwork, and the confidence and credibility to present your opinions to senior clients.

This isn’t a routine 9-to-5 job. Rigour and curiosity are vital if you’re to tackle the issues that keep business leaders up at night. You’ll be highly motivated and ambitious. Someone who is hungry for early responsibility, client interaction, and the opportunity to make a difference from day one.

We also look for people who bring something more to our work than their academic credentials. Like the self-discipline and team-working skills that stem from a sporting background; or leadership qualities gained through work experience. The ability to speak more than one language is another big plus.
