FLAMES IN THE COMMUNITYFLAMES IN THE COMMUNITY
Flames Foundation for Life
Your new team: Bill Redmond, President Rotary Club of Calgary, Darryl Sutter, General Manager and Head Coach of Calgary Flames
and Bruce MacDonald, President Rotary Club of Calgary South
The “Flames Foundation for Life” is at the heart of all Flames fundraising. Through a new partnership with Calgary Rotary called the “Rotary/Flames Gift to the Community”, the Foundation can extend its reach even further. With a pledge of ten million dollars over the next five years, this alliance will encompass critical needs in Southern Alberta. Our focus will be:
Medical advancement is an area the Calgary Flames are committed to. Through the “REACH” organization, we’re creating a new vision of wellness and medical research. Our goal is to enhance the well-being of everyone in Southern Alberta. Rotary/Flames Park will be two acres of serenity surrounding the new Ronald McDonald House. The park will be an oasis of trees, grass and flowers ... It will include a tots’ playground, a team play area and many quiet garden retreats. Rotary/Flames House will be Southern Alberta’s first free-standing “pediatric hospice and respite centre” for terminaly ill children. Amateur sports and grassroots initiatives have always been – and will always be -- at centre ice.
The Calgary Flames have been profoundly touched by your support and generosity. The “Flames Foundation for Life” and the “Rotary/Flames Gift to the Community” reflect our continued commitment to giving back. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Flames Fans, thank you Rotary, thank you Calgary. We could not have done it without you!
The Flames Foundation for Life is the charitable arm of the Calgary Flames through which more than 31 million dollars in funding has already been directed to education, medical research, amateur sport and recreation. The Calgary Flames are proud to continue their commitment to the community through an ongoing partnership between the Flames Foundation for Life and the Rotary Clubs of Calgary. Known as the “Rotary/Flames Gift to the Community”, this alliance focuses on the following key areas:
Rotary/Flames House
Rotary/Flames House will be Alberta’s first pediatric hospice and respite centre for terminally ill children. The house will be located on the property adjacent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital and will have seven patient rooms, therapeutic activity areas and a classroom. Rotary/Flames House will open in 2008.
Rotary/Flames Park at Ronald McDonald House
Ronald McDonald House is a compassionate, safe and affordable ‘home away from home’ for out-of-town families whose children are critically ill and receiving treatment in a Calgary Hospital. The new Ronald McDonald House has been completed and sits on two acres of land adjacent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. These two acres have been transformed into Rotary/Flames Park – an oasis of trees, grass and flowers that includes a tots’ playground, a team play area and many quiet garden retreats.
Flames for Medical Advancement
Reach!, the joint fundraising initiative of the University of Calgary and the Calgary Health Region, is working with philanthropic leaders like the Flames Foundation for Life and the Rotary Club, to achieve a new world standard of health for southern Albertans. This partnership will involve five key areas: Public Health & Wellness, Heart Disease, Neuroscience, NeuroArm, and the Alberta Bone & Joint Health Institute.
Amateur Sports & Grassroots Initiatives
Hockey development and education have always been, and will continue to be, at centre ice for the Calgary Flames Hockey Club. In addition to the Flames annual support of the Flames Financial Assistance Program for Minor Hockey, the players and coaches are involved in various minor hockey initiatives. These include Minor Hockey Week, minor hockey team tours of the Flames dressing room, Coaching Day in Alberta, and hosting hockey clinics.

T rying to catch a perfect moment in the sporting world can be tough – athletes are always on the
move. Perhaps that’s why Flames photographer Gerry Thomas enjoys the work so much.
He is the exact same way.
With three art galleries – one each in Calgary, Edmonton, and Waterton, and another opening soon in Canmore at the Silver Creek Resort – Thomas is a very busy man.
Thomas started out as an artist, but a number of twists and turns have led to his current position as a much-sought-after professional photographer. “I had planned to go to art school, and took a NAIT [Northern Alberta Institute of Technology] photography program,” Thomas says. “I started shooting pro in 1986. I skied with the Crazy Canucks in the mid-80s – my first publications were Ski Canada, Powder Magazine, that sort of thing. One of the first big events I was a part of was the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics a couple of years later.”
Since then, Thomas has gone on to photograph the U.S. National Ski Team, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball, in addition to his work in the National Hockey League.
Thomas has also kept busy with many all-star events and commercial sporting ventures. He was the first Canadian photographer to work with the Upper Deck sports card franchise, and has worked with Sports Illustrated on many occasions.
“One of my favourite days as a photographer was in the mid-90s, when we rented out the Santa Monica Pier for the day and shot the NFL players,” Gerry laughs. “We planned it a month out, and it was really expensive to rent the facilities. We took over the entire park. The players were all dressed up, and we took them out of their element – we’re talking bumper cars and rides, outdoor stuff. It was great.”
Thomas’ website has a wide selection of photographs that showcase his versatility as a photographer, including shots of nature and people, as well as sports moments. It also features collector’s lithographs of such athletes as Wayne Gretzky, Robyn Regehr, and Mario Lemieux.
“I’ve spent fourteen years with the Flames, and now it seems in a way that I am returning to my artistic roots,” Thomas notes. “I’ve created some high-end collectible artwork that the Flames market as part of their Top Shelf ticket package at the Pengrowth Saddledome. I’ve been able to merge my photography skills with my love of art.”
Thomas spends much of his free time commuting between his art galleries, where he has endeavoured to create an overall experience for art aficionados.
“My galleries have changed their style. We have open, large spaces, like a New York-style gallery,” he says. “It’s different than many other galleries. I want people to come in, have a glass of wine, and really enjoy their day here. There is lots of Alberta content, like big sky pieces and the prairies. We’ve made the galleries as unique as the artwork they showcase.”
You can check out Thomas’ work online at www.gerrythomas.com and http://dose.clubzone.com/c/Calgary/Other/Gerry_Thomas_Gallery.html, or visit the Gerry Thomas Gallery in Calgary at 602 – 11th Avenue S.W., Lower Level (open to the public Wednesday through Saturday).

ASSISTS : When it comes to dedication, the Esso Medals and Certificates of Achievement program has always been
there to help. For 25 years, we’ve been committed to rewarding young, passionate hockey players who show
qualities of dedication, effort and fair play. And we’ve watched past recipients grow up to become all-star
champions, proving that the greatest players were great kids first. So, as long as kids are playing the game,
we want to keep inspiring them to strive further. And if past years have taught us anything, it’s that their
love of hockey will never, ever rest. For details, visit essomedals.ca

Proud Equipment Provider to the Calgary Flames
Properly fitted hockey equipment provides players of all ages with
maximum mobility and protection. But for young players in particular, the right equipment and the right fit are critical to staying safe on the ice.
Starting from the top
To help ensure kids stay safe, Hockey Canada says helmets, face shields, and throat protectors are mandatory and must be CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved.
Finding a CSA certified helmet is easy, says Todd Jackson, Senior Manager of Safety and Insurance for Hockey Canada. However, he says caution must be used when buying the facial protection to match: “There are so many manufacturers that not all facial protection may be compatible with every helmet.”
Jackson recommends a helmet that fits snugly enough not to move back and forth on the player’s head. Helmets, shields/cages, and throat protectors should never be altered in any way. In particular, throat protectors should not be made larger or smaller as this could
compromise their effectiveness. Facial protection needs to attach securely to the helmet so there are no gaps, which could result in stick or puck injuries.
Mouth guards are also mandatory, although they’re not CSA certified. These can prevent damage to the teeth and mouth, and reduce the possibility of concussions. Mouth guards should be fitted by the child’s dentist, although for young players the moldable ones will suffice.
middle ground
Shoulder pads and elbow pads also play a critical role in player safety. Although they do not require certification, they do need to fit correctly if they are to provide maximum protection.
“Don’t buy shoulder pads too big,” recommends Trevor Morgan, Manager of Programming for Hockey Calgary. Instead of buying new equipment big enough to fit for a few seasons, Morgan suggests buying good used equipment that fits the player currently. Just ensure that it isn’t cracked or damaged and that any minor repairs are fixed immediately.
To determine the correct fit for shoulder pads, the child’s shoulders should sit in the centre of the shoulder caps. If the pads are too big, they’ll move around and could leave parts of the upper body unprotected. Make sure the upper arm section of the shoulder pads reaches the top of the elbow pads.
The elbow should also fit snugly inside the pad so if the player falls there is no direct contact with the ice. Elbow pads are made for right and left arms, so check that they are placed correctly and the straps are snug (don’t use tape, it’s too constrictive). The elbow pads should reach the cuff of the glove
to ensure the forearm is fully protected. Players who wear short-cuffed gloves should also consider wearing slash guards to protect their forearms.
protecting “down there”
Protecting both male and female players from the waist down is a necessity. Good quality hockey pants will provide plenty of padding, just be sure they fit comfortably and firmly around the waist and don’t restrict movement.
“[Hockey pants] should meet the bottom of the shoulder pads and should overlap the shin pads by about one inch,” explains Jackson. “Players should be able to squat and stand up easily.”
Players should also wear athletic supports (jocks or jills) under their hockey pants. “They are very important,” says Jackson, “every player should wear one.”
Shin pads need to fit correctly, which means covering the centre of the kneecap and extending down to the top eyelet of the skate.
“Don’t buy shin pads too long – they’ll bounce up and may ride on the skate,” says Morgan. If shin pads don’t fit properly, the risk of injury is higher as a player could fall on the hard plastic ridge instead of the knee padding.
regular maintenance iS key!
Stuffing a bunch of sweaty equipment in a hockey bag and leaving it until the next practice or game is an invitation for bacteria to grow.
“We recommend taking equipment out of the bag and drying it properly,” says Jackson. “All equipment (and the bag) should be washed on a regular basis, and we recommend professional cleaning once a year.”
Equipment that has been aired and dried properly can help prevent infection, plus minimize the smell in the dressing room. Jocks and jills, undergarments, and socks should be washed and dried after every use to prevent chafing. Hockey Canada also recommends using an alcohol-based equipment disinfectant spray, which can be included as part of the regular cleaning routine.
