General Information

DescriptionThese activities focus on clinical use and medical issues important to the constantly evolving practice of ophthalmology, with a specific concentration on the most advanced medical and surgical treatment options within glaucoma, retina, anterior segment, and refractive surgery. Expert faculty will present the latest developments in the management of ocular conditions through a combination of didactic and highly interactive discussion sessions. Ample time will be reserved to pursue case studies with registrants.Seminar and didactic lecture time has also been devoted to the evolution of ophthalmology in the business practice setting. Financial benchmarking, coding and reimbursement, office management and budget analysis issued will be addressed.

Who Should AttendThese activities are intended for Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic Allied Health Professionals.

ObjectivesAfter attending these activities, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

• Integrate prescribed medical and surgical treatment options into everyday practice.

• Examine external legislative and internal practice issues impacting the field of ophthalmology.

• Formulate current and advanced treatment strategies with corresponding ocular conditions, including: glaucoma, retina, anterior segment and refractive surgery.

• Discuss new medical techniques, therapies and relevant clinical trials.

• Summarize the latest developments for the management of anterior segment problems.

• Assess the latest developments for the management of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus conditions.

SeminarsRefraction for Laser Vision Correction Seminar: BaltimorePre-operative evaluation of LASIK patients to minimize complications and to optimize post-operative results.

Non-Invasive Facial Rejuvenation Seminar: Baltimore and VailWilmer Eye Institute physicians, Drs. Michael Grant and Shannath Merbs, will conduct patient treatment demonstrations, using botulinum toxin for both therapeutic and cosmetic uses.

Physician Practice Financial Seminar: Baltimore and VailJohn and Traudy Grande, CFP’s, long-time speakers at the Current Concepts meetings, authors of Ophthalmology Times; “Money Matters” column, and financial advisors to ophthalmology practices across the nation, will be presenting (case studies included) on Thursday, December 5 from 12:10 - 12:50 p.m. during lunch and Sunday, March 9 after early registration from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Socio-Economic Session (MSEPS): BaltimoreA socio-economic session, in cooperation with The Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, will focus on legal and regulatory issues, residency training programs, the “Pay-for-Performance” policy and several other areas of interest specifically tailored for the practicing ophthalmologist.

OCT Seminars: Baltimore and VailThe availability of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) devices holds promise for the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. While the improved resolution SD-OCT may result in earlier detection of disease or its progression, there are as yet no sufficiently long-term studies of the role of SDOCT in glaucoma. We have evaluated three SD-OCT machines in both research and clinical settings and will summarize our experience thus far.With respect to the use of OCT in retina, clinical trials both in the management of macular edema, such as diabetic macular edema, and age-related macular degeneration, have proven the benefits of treatments based on changes in OCT. The use of OCT in these conditions will be reviewed.

Corneal Computer Analysis Seminar: VailThis workshop will describe different instruments and approaches to corneal modeling. Different applications of these modeling instruments will be discussed. Clinical approaches and diagnostic criteria will be presented in case format.

Diagnostic and Patient Evaluating for Refractive Surgery Seminar: VailReview of pre-operative corneal imaging and surgical planning to ensure positive outcomes in refractive surgery.

A link to the syllabus will be provided via email shortly before the activity begins if you prefer to study or print the syllabus. A printed copy may be ordered at the time of registration for an additional fee of $45. The printed copy will be provided during activity registration. Cancellations or refunds for the printed copy will not be permitted.

EvaluationA form will be available to attendees to evaluate each session and each speaker’s presentation, as well as to identify future educational needs.

Outcomes SurveyA survey will be sent to all physician attendees within three months post activity to assist us in determining what impact this activity had on the attendee’s practice.
