For the first time in his life, he had the funds to purchase luxuries such as playing cards, brandy, and tobacco. One day, he had a life-changing experience. It was winter and Wesley had just purchased some decorations for his room when he encountered a chambermaid at his door who he noticed lacked a coat to protect her from the cold. He wanted to give her some money to purchase a coat and realized he had too little left. He suddenly began to ask himself what God would think about how he was using his money, whether or not God would regard him as a “good and faithful steward.” He began to realize that his spending on himself was weighing him down instead of enabling him to defy gravity in such a way that he could be a benefit to the poor, cold woman now standing before him. Starting when he was 28 and for the rest of his life, he lived with remarkable frugality. He lived simply so that he could free his resources in order to help others as much as he possibly could. He ate a vegetarian diet, mainly potatoes, so that he could save money. He had his hair cut as seldom as possible for the same reason. He was so careful with his purchases that, in 1776, the tax commissioners accused him of underreporting his possessions on his return and failing to pay excise on them, reasoning that he must own more than he did. He managed to live on 30 pounds a year for the rest of his life and he gave away the surplus. In fact, when Wesley died, he give instructions that his pallbearers were to be unemployed men looking for work, and that there should be heavy black curtains in the windows of the sanctuary of the church where his funeral was to take place. The fabric from those curtains was to be fashioned into dresses for poor women. It is said that when John Wesley died, he only left behind some religious books, a well-worn pulpit robe, and the Methodist Church. November 26 Special Sunday United Methodist Student Day

In November, the United Methodist Church celebrates Student Day. This special Sunday collection assists young people who do not have the resources to attend a school of their choice, or any school at all. Your generous donation supports these students as they prepare for a life that unites faith with knowledge. When you support United Methodist Student Day, you make it possible for students to serve the world God loves. Please give prayerfully and generously on November 26.

John Wesley and “Defying Gravity” Continued from page 1

John Wesley’s gravity-defying generosity was borne of two important realizations. The first was the realization that all he had was God’s, and that God had entrusted wealth to him so that he might be a steward of his wealth the purpose of holiness. Wesley understood God as having great trust in people like you and me to use what is God’s in godlike, God-glorifying ways. Second, he realized that generosity does not happen by accident. It requires disciplined budgeting and careful planning. John Wesley organized his life so that he could be a generous, life-changing person. By living well within his means, he was freed, not only from the weight of debt that so plagued his father for so much of his life, but also freed to be the kind of disciple who God was calling him to be at any given moment. In so doing, he was freed to, in the words of Jesus “have life, and have it abundantly.” It is my prayer that the Defying Gravity series has been a blessing to you, that it has helped you to take steps towards defying financial gravity, that it has enabled you to become a more generous disciple of Christ, and that you will be able to experience the joys of generosity in your own life. If you have not yet returned your 2018 Estimate of Giving to the church, it is not too late. You can do so online (www.reveilleumc.org/estimate) or use the form on page 17 and place it in the offering plate during worship or mail to the church office. Our goal for 2018 is for these estimates of giving to total $1.3 million, which is a stretch goal of $100,000 more than last year. It is my belief, as well as the belief of church leadership, that together, we can do this, that we can be a “gravity-defying” congregation, and that our generosity can fund our witness to the world in 2018. I am grateful to be making this journey of generosity with each of you as together, we see what God can do.

BUDGET

2018 Budget Funding Our Vision In September, the Church Council approved by consensus Reveille’s 2018 budget. The budget is summarized below.

Expenses: Reflecting our Vision The budget reflects our church’s vision and plans for our ministries in 2018. It is the result of prayer, discernment, and planning by numerous congregational leaders and our church staff. At our Town Hall meetings on the budget in October, several of these leaders and staff presented overviews of their ministry plans, including representatives from our Children’s, Youth, and Outreach ministries.

The largest budgeted expenses are apportionments (the support we provide to the United Methodist Church at the district, conference, and denomination levels), staff, and property. Staff and property expenses, along with administration, provide the guidance and infrastructure to support all the other ministries of our church. At 47%, our staff expenses are actually a smaller proportion of the total budget than many other mainline Protestant churches of our size.

Revenue: Funding the Vision In conjunction with our Defying Gravity stewardship series in October, we learned about breaking free from the culture of more to improve our lives and experience the spiritual discipline of generosity. For 2018, our revenue from giving is budgeted at $1.3 million, up $100,000 from last year. Instead of cutting back on our ministry plans for next year, the Council agreed to challenge our members and friends to grow in their generosity as Christian givers to fully fund our ministries for the upcoming year.

The 2018 budget also utilizes monies from several designated funds, many of which the church has been holding for years. It is a best practice to use designated funds promptly for the purposes they were given, and so we will use these funds in 2018 for appropriate expenditures to celebrate the ministry of the givers.

The 2018 budget represents the best of what our church has to offer. Thank you for your support of these ministries that are doing the work of God in the world through Reveille.

If you have not already returned your Estimate of Giving for 2018, please see page 17 to learn how to make your commitment of support.

Gift Consecration and Presentation

Friends of Barnabas Foundation Nury Janania, the Honduran director of Friends of Barnabas Foundation, will join us for our 11:00 am worship service on Sunday, November 5. We will consecrate Reveille’s gift during the service with a gift presentation following in the welcome center. Those who have served in Honduras with Friends of Barnabas in the past are especially encouraged to attend.

Reveille has a long-standing relationship with Friends of Barnabas, sending a mission team to Honduras each summer to provide medical care for impoverished children. Through this contribution of $48,000, we will be supporting the organization’s Extended Care program for children whose medical needs go beyond the care provided by the Community Health clinics. This funding is made possible through the generosity of the anonymous donor who blessed Reveille with a gift of $1 million.

Sign Up Now for the 2018 Mission Trip Reveille's Outreach Ministry plans to send another mission team to Honduras, July 21-29, 2018, through the Friends of Barnabas Foundation. We would like to thank John Salmon for stepping up to lead the team next year.

Do you feel called to be part of a mission team serving the people of Honduras? Do you speak Spanish? Do you have medical, dental, or vision training and seek to improve the lives of those who don't have such regular care? Do you have administrative skills and a desire to serve as assistant team leader?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions or would like more information, please contact Stu Blain, [email protected].

ANNOUNCEMENTS & NEWS

News from your Church Council October 24, 2017 Meeting

Gift Task Force The gift task force has approved the following disbursements from first $200,000 of the million dollar anonymous gift:

For Friends of Barnabas, $3,250 for a community partnership in El Cielto, Honduras, and $48,000 to support the extended care program (see page 6 for details).

$50,000 for the purchase of a bus for Koinonia Christian Church, a Swansboro partner church.

$50,000 for the purchase of a new bus for Reveille. $29,245 for advertising and promotion of our

church and ministries to the community. $5,000 for potential expansion of Reveille Day into

an invitational community event. $10,400 for potential Asset Based Community

Development (ABCD) work with Embrace Richmond in Swansboro and the community surrounding Reveille.

The task force will consider allocation of the remaining $4,105, as well as re-allocation of the ABCD funding ($10,400) as feedback has indicated that this is not the right time to perform the studies.

Charge Conference The Council reviewed the slate of officers proposed by the Committee on Nominations for approval at Charge Conference. The Council also approved the Committee on Nominations’ plan for the Charge Conference presentation on our discipleship process. Reveille’s Charge Conference will take place in a cluster gathering with other churches at 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 12, at Good Shepherd UMC. Uniting Methodists The UMC Commission on a Way Forward is reviewing and possibly revising sections of the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to maintain and strengthen the unity of the church. In order to better prepare our church for any future changes, the Council approved sending Lead Pastor Doug Forrester to the November 13-14 meeting of Uniting Methodists, a group that believes disagreements about same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy need not divide the church. Doug will share what he learns at the meeting with the congregation. Sunday Worship Attendance is Up Our Sunday worship attendance is up slightly year over year. Overall, average Sunday attendance is up 2.8% over the same time last year, with the 8:30 service up 1.4%, the 9:30 up 9.8%, and the 11:00 up 1.5%. The approved September Church Council minutes are now available. If you would like to review the document, please send a request to Terri Edwards, [email protected]. The approved October Council meeting minutes will be available following the next Council meeting.

Third Quarter 2017 Stewardship Update

Defying Gravity

Your generous support of Reveille’s ministries serves the purposes of Christ in our congregation, community, and world. Here are just a few recent examples of the impact of your contributions:

Through our summer youth mission trips, 43 youth served others in Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC.

Vacation Bible School helped build the faith of 84 children from Reveille and the local community.

A Reveille mission team provided health care to over 1,100 children in Honduras through Friends of Barnabas.

Families from Reveille and our Swansboro partner

churches came together in fellowship for a cookout at Byrd Park in August.

More than 540 people joined together for worship and fellowship on Reveille Day in September.

This fall, we invested in training to equip and empower youth and adults in our congregation to serve as ministry leaders.

Your financial support is a witness to your faith and enables us to continue to do God’s work through these ministries and many others.

It’s an alternative way of shopping for Christmas gifts, with the added benefit of supporting Reveille’s outreach ministries. Instead of receiving the item, you receive a card explaining the ministry and the item you purchased. You can then give the card to your friend or family member as a Christmas gift with extra meaning. All money donated through Glorious Gifts will be used to fund the specific ministry to which it is donated. On two Sundays, December 3 and 10, you will be able to shop in person in the welcome center, 9:00-11:15 am.
